All 4.5 hours of it. Replaces Metropolis as the oldest film I've seen and Once Upon a Time in America as the longest.

Fritz Lang gem. Obvious influence from Bonnie and Clyde's story in the ending, even only a few years after they were killed.

Henry Fonda western. Pretty solid.

Western meets samurai, which a lot of them borrowed or stole from in the first place. A gem.

Fritz Lang's third and final western. I enjoyed Western Union previously, but this one is better.

Don Siegel film. Originally written with Eastwood in mind, who turned it down. Bit of a gem even without him.

Slow burn western drama about an old cowboy at the end of the Old West era.

Another John Huston gem.

Pre-Code gangster movie from 1931. While not as good or as extreme as Scarface (which remains 15 rated here in the UK where this is just PG) it's an essential piece of genre history. There's also something more authentic about watching prohibition gangster movies from this era. These actors and filmmakers lived it.

WW2 spy movie with some noirish qualities (wouldn't call it a full noir myself though). A weaker one from Fritz Lang, but still very solid. He's fast become a favourite director of mine, especially among those active in the 1930s or earlier, along with Hitchcock.

I may be committing sacrilege by saying this, but I found this movie corny as fuck. Somehow I still really enjoyed it.

It's a solid enough war drama, but they stand around talking about it more than actually fighting the war it seems.

Stylish & violent, with a great cast that includes Brolin, Gosling and Penn among others, it should be one hell of a gangster movie. Only it isn't. Not bad per se but so much less than the sum of its parts.

Decent noir.

I'd already seen the Coen Brothers remake and unlike most liked it, but this is probably objectively better. Damn is Alec Guinness bloody creepy and sinister in this.

Went in not expecting much - pleasantly surprised, though I don't think it's a watch more than once kind of movie.

Entertaining enough comedy drama, though predictable in just about everything that happens.

Another excellent Hitchcock. This must have been pretty poignant in 1940 given it's subject about WW2 breaking out and showing London being bombed, before London was actually bombed IRL.

Shit with a capital SHIT. It ought to be illegal to make horror movies this bad. No atmosphere, terrible characters who make you not give a crap about them, generic plot and a bad CGI monster all done up in a genuinely creepy DVD cover (not the above image) rife with misinformation about the movie including it's running time.

Re-watch of this western gem.

While I do think it's the weakest of Martin McDonagh's three movies so far, it's still bloody brilliant. It just has the misfortune of being released between In Bruges and Three Billboards.

Highly enjoyable drama.

Chinese Armageddon on steroids. Not brilliant but highly entertaining and action packed (just don´t think about the awful acting, motivation of the characters, and the lines):

Re-watch via a quality DVD rather than that piece of shit upload available on Amazon Prime. There's no contest for me that this is the best film of the 1930's I've watched so far. Not that that's many, but still, it's a tough act to beat.

Anthony Mann is likely not the best remembered director of westerns from the classic era, perhaps because he never directed John Wayne, but I personally feel that he should be ranked alongside John Ford and Howard Hawks (who actually directed relatively few westerns). This is a another very good one with James Stewart as the lead. The only Stewart/Mann western I've not seen now is The Naked Spur, which oddly cannot be bought on a genuine UK DVD (or blu-ray it seems) for love nor money.

Very early (1940) film noir. If RYM has its dates right it's actually only the fourth film noir to have been released. While this one does tend toward the melodramatic than I really care for (especially Bette Davis), it's essential viewing. Great work with the shadows.

Yeah that's definitely one I'd like to see. Metropolis has certainly opened up my interest in the silent era. The next one I watch will probably be Lang's Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler, which I've purchased just today in a boxset with the other two films of the trilogy. Going to be an interesting watch, not least because it's nearly five hours long!

This one had potential, but ultimately I didn´t like it much. The ending was too fast and very Little was explained. It didn´t Work:

I saw all of Metropolis in one sitting a few years ago, and thought it was brilliant! It had really great imagery and ideas, considering how old it is.

My first silent film and also takes over as the oldest film I've seen. In some ways it seems pretty corny, but it's also impossible not to be wowed by the fact that this was released in 1927 and I also cannot say for a minute that I wasn't entertained in spite of the long length (I have the restored 2.5 hour version), though I was forced to watch it in three instalments between last night and this morning, taking breaks to keep up with shows live on TV and then because I simply couldn't say awake to finish it, but I don't think it would have been hard to watch it one sitting otherwise. What started as something I felt obliged to watch in order to call myself a self-respecting sci-fi fan quickly turned into a movie I was floored by. Everyone should see this, though make sure you see the restore 2010 version of course!

Bogart's penultimate movie. Great home invasion thriller/noir. Could have been really brutal had the Hollywood Production Code not still be in force at the time.

Re-watch on a remastered DVD. Honesty don't recall if the version I originally watched on Amazon was the same or any worse, but this was a very good copy. A must for film noir and/or Fritz Lang fans.

Solid western.

While best known as a romance, like Casablanca it's also a wartime movie. An essential companion to that film IMO.

One of Fritz Lang's three westerns. Very good; actually the first western I've seen Randolph Scott in that I've really liked.
