Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

The first heavy metal bands (Proto) such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM) such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal had attracted a worldwide following of fans known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

AC/DC Fly on the Wall

UMUR
"Fly on the Wall" is the 10th full-length studio album by Australian hard/heavy rock act AC/DC. The album was released through Atlantic Records in June 1985. Like the case had been with "Flick of the Switch (1983)", "Fly on the Wall" is a self-produced affair. The two Young brothers had a desire to bring out the rawness of their early material as opposed to the more polished and pop-oriented sound productions of many contemporary hard rock and metal albums. A significant lineup change had taken place as original drummer Phil Rudd, who had been playing on all AC/DC albums since the band´s debut, left the band before the recording of "Fly on the Wall". His place is taken by Simon Wright who plays the drums on the album.

Four albums into the Brian Johnson led AC/DC era and the music on "Fly on the Wall" still sounds unmistakably like AC/DC. They have a signature sound and very seldom have they deviated much from that core sound. A heavy rocking rythm section, the raw bluesy hard rock riffing from Angus- and Malcolm Young (and some delicious guitar solos by Angus) and of course Brian Johnson´s impressive rusty wail. Allthough there are few standout tracks on the album, the title track, "Shake Your Foundations" and the relatively fast-paced "Playing With Girls" are some of the highlights. The latter mentioned sounds a bit like a raw version of something Guns´n´Roses would succeed with just a few years later.

While the album "only" sold about 1 million copies upon it´s release, which was considered a disappointment at the time, and generally received bad reviews, "Fly on the Wall" really isn´t that different from most other AC/DC releases. It might lack those really standout tracks that are featured on some of the group´s releases, but the reason for the relatively low sales, especially compared to the previous couple of albums, was probably more due to the musical climate at the time (the rise and commercial success of glam in particular), than because of the quality of the release. We´re not talking one of the best AC/DC albums I agree with that, but even one of the band´s less standout albums, is still a quality release deserving a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating.

KROKUS The Blitz

KROKUS didn't cover any new ground with 'The Blitz'. They're on the eight album with this and it's basically a good hard rock album that pays tribute to AC/DC. The first song, 'Midnite Maniac', are among their most popular track, but also many recognize THE SWEET's cover, 'Ballroom Blitz', which also reminds me a lot to early VAN HALEN style here. This song is one of the highlight of the album, along with the midtempo radio friendly track, 'Our Love', and the energetic, 'Ready To Rock', but the best of the best is 'Rock The Nation'.

Despite the cheesy title, the glam metal riffin' with an anthemic chorus of this song blow any mind's away. Two poor fillers, 'Out To Lunch' and 'Hot Stuff', contributed to the low rating compared to other KROKUS' album, but I don't see it as a terrible album like some has stated. Even songs like 'Out of Control' or 'Boys Nite Out', even though didn't have the capability of climbing up the chart, both are still accessible and enjoyable to these ears. 'The Blitz' is quite reasonable at 70%

SAXON Denim and Leather

It was quite a surprise for me to realize that I actually don't like this album as much as it's two predecessors. This is especially surprising considering that "Princess Of The Night" and "Denim And Leather" are two of my top 3 Saxon compositions. So how can this be?

First thing is first, the album couldn't have chosen a better album opener with "Princess Of The Night" being not only an amazing live track but a studio one as well! "Never Surrender" and "Out Of Control" are fun but ultimately pretty harmless tracks that have just enough staying power to hold their own ground. The first noticeable problem comes with the first tones of "Rough And Ready" and especially "Play It Loud". These tracks are just not metal enough for my taste and sound more like over-amplified hard rock tunes. Fortunately the gorgeous intro of "And The Bands Played On" kicks in just in time to keep this album afloat for a little while longer. Easily one of the best Saxon tracks that I wouldn't mind being expanded by 1-2 more minutes!

"Midnight Rider" and "Fire In The Sky" are pretty solid tracks which unfortunately get buried within this albums wide variety of compositions. Both tracks come close to recreating the magic of the two previous releases but somehow feel a bit dated (...or more like "been there, done that") by this point in time.

Since there is no real point for me to introduce this album's wonderful title track, so let me end this review by stating that "Denim And Leather" is another great Saxon classic. The album might not be as strong as its two predecessors but there is enough staying power in these compositions, especially once we start comparing them to the band's later releases. Definitely give it a go once you've experienced "Wheels Of Steel" and "Strong Arm Of The Law"!

SAXON Strong Arm of the Law

Even though the great Saxon album streak didn't start until their second album "Wheels Of Steel", once the thunder struck it was almost certain to strike again. This is essentially what happened with the release of "Strong Arm Of The Law"!

Unlike its predecessor, "Strong Arm Of The Law" starts off with lesser known but equally essential heavy metal classics "Heavy Metal Thunder" and "To Hell And Back Again". I actually happen to prefer this album's intro more than any other one from Saxon. It's a bit unfortunate that the album begins to wind down towards its halfway point with the album's title track being a rather cozy but overall too mellow Saxon track. "Taking Your Chances" kicks things back into high gear once again and "20,000 ft." pushes the envelope even further, thus making this track one of my top 3 Saxon essentials.

The final three album tracks are unfortunately not as strong, with the low point being "Sixth Form Girls", but the record still holds together excellently. It's quite amazing to see Saxon release their three essential releases ("Wheels Of Steel" to "Denim and Leather") in a time span of less than 1,5 years but that's essentially what happened. "Strong Arm Of The Law" is highly recommended to fans of Heavy Metal!

***** star songs: Heavy Metal Thunder (4:21) To Hell And Back Again (4:45) Taking Your Chances (4:20) 20,000 ft. (3:17)

SAXON Wheels of Steel

I've been a passive Saxon fan for merely a decade with knowledge of classic tunes like "Denim And Leather", "Princess Of The Night" and "747 (Strangers In The Night)". Unfortunately, for myself, it wasn't until recently that I've finally given Saxon a proper chance to show off their chops in the album writing department. "Wheels Of Steel" was my first studio album introduction and it's definitely an album to be reckoned with!

Right off the bat we're treated to great tracks like "Motorcycle Man", "Stand Up And Be Counted" and the aforementioned "747 (Strangers In The Night)". The album does wind down at its halfway point but the great overall quality is pretty much maintained all the way to the end, with a minor exception of "Street Fighting Gang" which unfortunately sounds a bit to straightforward for my taste.

If your unfamiliar with Saxon then "Wheels Of Steel" is definitely a great first album to break the ice. There is a great quality to these compositions that makes this record one of the essential NWoBHM classics that have only grown in admiration over the years. Highly recommended to all metal fans!

***** star songs: Motorcycle Man (4:01) Stand Up And Be Counted (3:10) 747 (Strangers In The Night) (4:58) Machine Gun (5:23)

**** star songs: Wheels Of Steel (5:59) Freeway Mad (2:41) See The Light Shining (4:56) Suzie Hold On (4:34)

SPINAL TAP This Is Spinal Tap

I have to agree with everything Stooge said about this classic parody. It deserves five stars for the same reason that Frank Zappa's do. This movie might turn off some people but for me it's the best musical parody ever.

What makes this so great is it is believable and true. The acting is spot on and they act like any stoned rock stars. They aren't too bright and their songs are completely spot on lyrically and musically with the overt sexualness and over the top fantasy. They also poke fun at John Bonham and Keith Moon with their own drummer's strange deaths (their first was in a gardening accident, one spontaneously turned into a puff of smoke), They also parody quite well the tension and break-ups that a lot of rock bands go through.

Anyone who can laugh at something they like should highly enjoy this movie, or anyone who likes to laugh in general. Highly recommended.

JUDAS PRIEST Rising in the East

Opening with the classic double punch of `The Hellion/Electric Eye,’ you know that this concert is going to be good.

The band do their best to mix a diverse career spanning set list with playing all their biggest hits and do a pretty successful job, managing to cover a full five songs from their then new `Angel of Retribution,’ album with their big hits like `Breaking the Law,’ `Living After Midnight,’ and `You’ve Got Another Thing Coming,’ while still playing at least one song from their less famous `Point of Entry,’ `Turbo,’ and `Ram It Down,’ albums.

Musically, the band are on fire, with impressive guitar soloing, energetic on stage performances and drummer Scott Travis playing songs harder, with confidence and authority that makes them sound that much heavier and tighter. The band are playing on a fairly large stage with elaborate set pieces, risers and of course, the famous motorcycle.

Some fans have made a lot of complaints about Rob Halford’s performance here, but with the sole exception of the vocals on the track `Painkiller,’ (which, as it happens has impossibly difficult vocals to begin with) I think these complaints are pretty off the mark.

If you need proof that Rob can still reach those high notes see the `You’re Possessing Me,’ scream in `A Touch of Evil’ or indeed the entire performance of the fast and high pitched `Riding on the Wind.’

Furthermore Rob’s whole on-stage attitude is a winner, seeming genuinely pleased each and every time the crowd gets a sing along moment correct, adding little Robotic Walk gestures to `Metal Gods,’ and generally looking like he’s giving it his all, to the point where he is sweating and red in the face, not because he can’t hack it, but rather because he’s giving it his very all.

Even if you do for some reason take exception with Rob, there is simply no denying the performances of Glen, Scott, Ian and Mr. Downing who all blast away like a well oiled machine, but with the energy of a much younger band.

In terms of camera, editing, sound and mix there really isn’t anything to complain about, everything is handled well and the whole package is as slick and professional as you would hope for from a band of their size.

Overall this is a great looking and great sounding DVD from Judas Priest and that alone should have you interested, add to that an interesting set list and dismiss the complaints about Rob and you should find `Rising In The East,’ a really worthy addition to your collection.

DIO Holy Diver Live

Dio’s Holy Diver Live is a very enjoyable release from one of Rock and Metal’s most famous artists.

During the two hour run time the band play a selection of songs from Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio in addition to performing the entire of the Holy Diver album.

If the band’s line up or the concert’s tracklisting bothers you then feel free to give this a miss, but for everyone else you’ll find a very strong Live Blu Ray indeed.

The sound, both in terms of recording quality and mix is simply excellent and the picture quality is very high, with suitable camera work and a good pace of editing.

Ronnie James Dio’s performance live is fantastic as always and the band which includes Doug Aldrich on guitar, Rudy Sarzo on bass and Scott Warren on keyboards are on top form, performing professionally and delivering the material with flair and enthusiasm.

Drummer Simon Wright even performs a surprisingly enjoyable and musical drum solo, which is lengthy enough to sink your teeth into but still short enough that it never becomes boring.

The band also enliven the material with little twists on the material here and there, such as different drum fills or guitar licks than on record as well as adding dynamic endings to some of the songs which faded out on their original albums.

The only complaint to be had about the film is that there are one or two shots in which the drums on screen are blatantly not coming out of the speakers (simple editing mistakes, where you can see snare rolls in the background during sections without snare rolls) but there are only about three such mistakes in the whole film and therfor not really worth too much concern.

Otherwise, this is a superb release, a strong performance of a selection of classic material, shot and sounding excellent.

Even though there are already a lot of Dio DVDs available, Holy Diver Live is definitely worth getting unless you lost all interest in the prospect of Dio live DVDs anyway, in which case you already know this isn’t for you. For everyone else, this is highly recommended.

METALLICA S&M

"Let's hear it for Michael Kamen yeah!" He was the only one who had the guts to do this. This is the ultimate exercise in excess, to marry Metallica with a Symphony orchestra. The DVD is a crystal clear well edited package onthe ultimate event of the year. It is great to watch the orchestra getting into the music and then to see Metallica banging along. The crowd are as raucous as any Metallicrowd and of course it is as heavy as it always is. There are some fantastic surprises such as Call Of Cthulu sounding very Gothic and powerful with the violins and brass. The concert shows in equal measure the band and orchestra trading off seamlessly. It has been done before of course with Deep Purple and other metal acts. It is almost becoming a cliche of late with many bands taking up the idea including Kiss, Within Temptation, Dream Theater and Therion, all of which are captured on DVD. Non metal acts have done it such as Camel, Yes and ELP. The weird thing about it is these orchestral and rock marriages always work for me. I love to hear that massive orchestral sound with the crunching distortion of guitars. To hear a violin sweep across when you expect a guitar solo is bliss to my ears.

There are so many highlights on this DVD including Master of Puppets, more dramatic than ever, the darkness of super heavy The Thing That Should Not Be, The Memory Remains, iconic with audience participation, Nothing Else Matters, a definitive highlight and the crowd are in raptures when this is played. For Whom the Bell Tolls sounds very Gothic with the sweeping violins, and the song One is a masterpiece with the orchestral accompaniment.

The footage is professionally shot and edited as you would expect and it is nice to see the orhestra mamebrs having fun with this. None of the songs are less heavy, they are augmented to majestic heights. Watching this concert live is the best experience which is perhaps a pinnacle of the group's existence. Soon after it all turned sour as we know, captured on the astonishing Some Kind of Monster doco, but it is so great to see Metallica at the height of their powers as we do in S & M. Check out this DVD to see metal at its grandest.

This is a great DVD of almost 4 hours of non stop Metallica. The making of the Black Album is a fascinating look at how the masterpiece evolved from small beginnings to becoming the worldwide million seller. The documentary is the key feature though when Metallica had completed the pinnacle groundbreaking Black Album that really made the music world sit up and take notice. Even non metal fans were no longer ignoring them. They were suddenly a household name with songs such as Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. They were on the radio and many thought they had sol dout but that was not the case. The live shows were as energetic and crazy as ever, but hte difference was the band were selling out massive stadiums and this doco captures the success and excess of this vital era for the band. There are some humorous moments and some insanity as you might expect. References to Spinal Tap were unforgettable ut the performances are now infamous; that image of Hetfield decked out in black with V Wing and microphone up the nose is iconic. The band are mature in the video but still know how to party. They are serious about their sound and to ensiure everything is perfect for their fans. We hear from the crew and see how they overcome overwhelming odds. There are many live performances, and some bonus features include the music videos we all have seen and some live songs. All in all it is Metallica when they reached the top of the mountain of success and... nothing else matters.
