"The Seed Left Behind" is the debut full-length studio album by Swedish death/thrash metal act Terrortory. The album was released through Discouraged Records in November 2011.
The music on the album is death metal with thrashy and melodic elements. There´s also an occasional semi-progressive edge in the music that reminds me of the early material by fellow Swedes in At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. The vocals are predominantly raspy/growling but there are also clean vocals on the album. Both the extreme and the clean vocals are delivered with conviction. In fact all the musicians deliver good performances. A tight playing but at the same time organic sounding unit this one. Speaking of organic, the sound production is also powerful and well sounding.
The album features a nice combination of aggression, drive and melody. I like the fact that while the music in some ways reek of old school aestethics, it´s not as such retro sounding. While Terrortory may not yet have hit a truly original sound, "The Seed Left Behind" shows great promise and it´s through and through an entertaining and memorable album. Besides strong musicianship and a great sound production we´re also treated to solid songwriting, which is one of the real assets of the album. Terrortory are never content with a basic vers/chorus formula and always put some surprising twists into the songs (hence the semi-progressive mention above) which ultimately make "The Seed Left Behind" a longer lasting album. The kind of album that you can return to, listen to again and find new things you didn´t notice the last time you listened to the album. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is fully deserved.
