Summoning's Minas Morgul was released after Lugburz, but that album was a fairly traditional black metal piece; it's here where the band's individual sound actually debuted. Summoning combine traditional black metal vocals and tremolo guitar - the latter a little more slowly-paced than is typical for black metal - with stirring symphonic themes played on synthesiser. Unfortunately, the synthesisers used are rather cheap, and in a tacky and cheesy way as opposed to a grungey lo-fi way; whilst this aesthetic may work in some context, it rather sabotages the tone of martial grandeur which the band seek to portray, as does the use at points of a rather dull drum machine.
Though Minas Morgul is undeniably more original than Summoning's debut, I would say it is also less of an entertaining listen; there's the blueprint here of an interesting approach to black metal, but the ingredients haven't come together yet.
