Soundgarden is a seattle rock band who helped to define the sound that came to be called grunge. Despite starting years earlier, and having a sound that more closely resembled Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin than their contemporaries, they are usually considered one of the "big four" of the '90s Seattle grunge bands, along with Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

The band was formed in 1984 by Chris Cornell (vocals, and originally drums) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass), to be joined later by Kim Thayil (guitar) and Scott Sundquist (drums). Thayil joined the band after moving to Seattle from illinois with Yamamoto and Bruce Pavitt, who would later start sub pop records. Scott Sundquist, who left in 1986 to concentrate more on his family, was replaced on drums by Matt Cameron. Yamamoto was replaced by Jason Everman on bass after the release of 1989's Louder Than Love. Jason Everman

SOUNDGARDEN King Animal

"King Animal" is the 6th full-length studio album by US alternative/hard rock act Soundgarden. The album was released through Seven Four Entertainment/Republic Records in November 2012. "King Animal" is a comeback album after a 16 year recording break. The band´s last studio album was "Down On The Upside" from 1996.

The music on "King Animal" pretty much take up where "Down On The Upside (1996)" ended. In other words this is the unmistakable sound of Soundgarden. Chris Cornell has always been an outstanding vocalist with a distinct and instantly recognisable vocal style and listening to the opening track "Been Away Too Long", it soon becomes apparent that nothing has changed in that department. Powerful and raw vocal delivery but the years haven´t gone by completely unnoticed and Chris Cornell is probably a more well balanced singer today than he was before the band split up. I could have wished for a bit more bite and attitude in his delivery though. Maybe the now more mature singer lost a bit of the youthful energy along the way? The rythm section is as strong and tight as ever and Kim Thayil´s colourful guitar playing adds some atmospheric textures to the tracks.

The songwriting is decent but like the case was on "Down On The Upside (1996)" there are too many unremarkable tracks on the album. The songwriting certainly isn´t as inspired as the songwriting on the band´s best work, but less will do and "King Animal" is still a pretty entertaining, very well produced and well played comeback album by Soundgarden. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is fair.

SOUNDGARDEN Live On I-5

UMUR
"Live on I-5" is the first live album by US alternative rock/metal act Soundgarden. The album was released through A&M Records in March 2011. The album was recorded at various shows during their late 1996 US West Coast tour supporting the "Down on the Upside (1996)" album. It was originally planned for release after the tour, but as Soundgarden disbanded, the live recordings were shelved. The decision to release the recordings now, is probably due to the band´s reunion in January 2010 and the subsequent select live shows in 2010 and 2011, which sparked interest in fans to hear new material from the band.

...even though the band were, at the time, touring in support of "Down on the Upside (1996)", that album is only represented with 4 tracks out of a tracklist of 17 tracks. The band´s arguably most popular albums, "Badmotorfinger (1991)" and "Superunknown (1994)", are each represented with 5 tracks. The remaining 3 tracks are "Nothing to Say" from Soundgarden´s 1987 debut EP "Screaming Life", the Beatles cover "Helter Skelter" and the Stooges cover "Search and Destroy". That means, that there are not a single track from "Ultramega OK (1988)" or "Louder Than Love (1989)" present on "Live on I-5".

The performance isn´t the most inspired thing I´ve ever heard. Especially lead vocalist Chris Cornell sounds tired and used. His voice often cracks and his pronounciation and delivery of the songlines are sloppy. The rest of the band don´t deliver the most exciting performance either, but it´s the vocals that drag my rating down the most. The sound quality is thankfully professional and well sounding. All in all this isn´t a very interesting release despite the good sound quality. Maybe the fact that the band were on the verge of disbanding at the time when the tracks were recorded has something to do with it, but I expect much more from such a high prolific act as Soundgarden. A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.

SOUNDGARDEN Ultramega OK

UMUR
Ultramega OK is the debut full-length studio album by US, Seattle based alternative hard rock/ metal act Soundgarden. The album was released in November 1988 by SST. I´ve been a Soundgarden fan for years, but somehow I´ve never had the opportunity to purchase or listen to Ultramega OK before now.

The music on the album is alternative hard rock. There´s a loose/ sloopy atmosphere on the album that´s without a doubt intentional. The band are also very interested in making noise. The unforgettable melodic material and recognisable hooks of later albums are not really present here. The production is kind of garage recording sounding, and while productions like that can be great, I can´t say the sound enhances my listening experience when it comes to the music on this album. Lead vocalist Chris Cornell are more restrained and not as confident as on later albums. It´s still obvious that the guy had a great vocal talent already this early in his career though.

...so this is the kind of album I´m glad to have heard because it´s an important early alternative rock/ metal album, but my personal enjoyment is limited. There´s a huge difference between the music on Ultramega OK and the music on Louder Than Love (1989) and it´s actually quite interesting how much the band developed in just one year. a 2.5 star rating is warranted.

SOUNDGARDEN Superunknown

Superunknown, while overall not Soundgarden's heaviest work, was easily the best album that the Seattle legends put out. With an eclectic mix of alternative metal and alternative rock with some experimental tracks (all with progressive elements), this is the most diverse album in the band's catalogue.

What made Superunkown, and Soundgarden in general, stand out among the other Seattle grunge bands was their obvious playing ability and musical talent. Chris Cornell's extremely large vocal range is utilized all though the album, most notably on the songs "Limo Wreck" and "The Day I Tried To Live." Cornell's lyrics deal with themes ranging from depression to drug abuse, typical of grunge bands at the Kim Thayil's heavy riffing provides the heaviest segments of the album on songs such as "Spoonman" and "4th of July." Thayil also uses unique effects and powerful melodies throughout the album, adding to Cornell's lyrics about the mysterious and unknown. He also contributes several unique and notable solos on the songs "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman", and "Like Suicide". Matt Cameron's drumming, although not in the caliber of songs like "Jesus Christ Pose" from Badmotorfinger, is still impressive, keeping a driving beat while including technical fills. Ben Shepard's bass lines are often a mix of both the guitars and drums, complementing on or both of the instruments.

Superunknown is chock full of amazing songs and includes many classics, with little or no filler. While the songs "Head Down" and "Half" may appear to be odd filler songs that did not need to be on the album, they provide a feel for what limits the band was willing to experiment to at the time. Soundgarden shows their progressive tendencies all throughout the album, with many songs in alternate time signatures and tunings, with unconventional song structures. Superunknown is a classic mix of some of the best songs that Soundgarden ever recorded, and is a perfect candidate for the greatest grunge album ever.

I still remember clearly I bought this tape when it came out in 1994 because of the track “Black Hole Sun" and grunge wave had reached its top before a new and fresh alternative rock began swelling in. "Superunknown" apparently is the band's breakthrough album, spawning five singles, and certified five platinums in the US, but behind their commercial success and after all these years, I never been able to digest their music nicely. Perhaps because their musical style isn't really my type of interest, but on the other hand, probably the majority of the songs here are plain dull and this album was overly exaggerated by MTV and label.

From my subjective point of views, there are several of really great songs here. I'll start with the single "My Wave", I found an interesting groovy arrangement inside. The next one, is the other single, "Black Hole Sun", which is very nostalgic and introduced Cornell's clear voice, a radio friendly track and a lovable piece, even to non-rock listeners. The third one is the uptempo punchy track, "Kickstand", but a shame that this is only a 1.3 minutes track. The other listenable tracks are "Let Me Drown", "Fell On Black Days", the title track, and "The Day I Tried To Live", but the rest are pointless, terribly average, and some of them are even worst. Tracks like "Spoonman", "Limo Wreck", or "Half" are good examples of utilizing the player's skip button.

The nuance on this album is dark and depressive, accompanied by doom-laden arrangement, slow and dynamic tempo, and alternative tunings which is typical in grunge-style music. To me, "Superunknown" isn't a horrible album, but ain't great either. There are just too many fillers and decent tracks. I buy this disc just for the sake of couple of great tracks I mentioned above, and to bring a good memory of how hard I save my pennies for days just to buy the tape, more than 15 years ago.
