"Sons of Satan Praise the Lord" is a compilation album by Swedish death´n´roll act Entombed. The album was released in November 2002 by Music for Nations. The band states on the sleeve the the compilation contains all cover tracks Entombed had recorded up until that point. I might add that it´s quite a few, because "Sons of Satan Praise the Lord" features 27 tracks distributed over two discs and a total playing time around 90 minutes. Most tracks have over the years been released on split singles or tribute compilations but there are a few unreleased tracks on the album too. The booklet features comments from the members about each of the tracks. The comments are generally informative and quite funny too.

You´ll find covers by as different artists as Repulsion, Lee Hazlewood, Roky Eriksson, King Crimson, Twisted Sister, Captain Beyond and many more. The common feature with all the covers is that Entombed are pretty good at making them their own. Some are better than others but the entertainment level is pretty high throughout. Some of the highlights for me are "Black Breath" (Repulsion), "Night of the Vampire" (Roky Eriksson), "Albino Flogged in Black" (Stillborn), "Some Velvet Morning" (Lee Hazlewood), "Under the Sun" (Black Sabbath) and the Christopher Young cover of the "Hellraiser" movie theme. The latter also appeared as the closing track on the "Hollowman (1993)" EP but is a welcome addition to this collection too.

The sound production varies slightly between tracks as the tracks have been recording during various recording sessions and conditions, but the standard is genereally good.

"Sons of Satan Praise the Lord" is overall a very enjoyable collection of cover tunes performed with passion and conviction by Entombed. As with all cover tunes albums it´s mostly a fan item, but I still think a 3.5 star rating is warranted because of the quality of the material and the performances.
