"Possession" is the 2nd full-length studio album by US heavy metal act Christian Mistress. The album was released through Relapse Records in February 2012. It´s yet another example of Relapse Records expanding their roster with a band that is not extreme metal.

The band play a traditional heavy metal/NWoBHM style that sounds very much like acts in that style sounded in the late seventies/early eighties. Christian Mistress differentiate themselves from most other acts in that genre though as they have a female vocalist. Not of the angelic kind but rather of a more raw sounding kind. Christine Davis is at times a really convincing vocalist but there are times I could have wished for a bit more bite. Thankfully the instrumental part of the music is high class traditional heavy metal/NWoBHM with heavy rocking rhythms and twin lead guitar work to die for, so a vocalist that sometimes lacks slightly in the attitude department isn´t going to ruin my day. The sound production has a vintage organic quality to it which suits the music very well and it´s another contributing factor to how enjoyable "Possession" is. Most of the material is uptempo and energetic but the title track, which is a cover of the Swedish doom metal act Faith, is slightly darker and takes the tempo down a bit too. It´s one of the standout tracks on the album and it´s different nature is great for the variation.

All in all "Possession" is a really enjoyable listen if you´re into retro sounding heavy metal and a 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
