Paradise Lost's One Second sees the band more or less abandoning all pretence of still retaining elements of the deathdoom sound of their early years, instead offering up a jaunt through the heavier end of gothic rock - they remind me a little of a slightly heavier Depeche Mode, had they decided to steer harder in a full-bore Fields of the Nephilim/Sisters of Mercy gothic direction. Purists who are very fond of the preceding albums like Icon or Draconian Times may feel a little betrayed by this one, but it's a decent example of its type - it's hard-edged enough to retain at least a foothold in the metal sphere, at least, though I think the balance is already over the gothic rock side of the rock/metal line. Approach with an open mind and don't on hearing anything that's especially like their preceding material. For my part, this pales in comparison to top-tier goth acts, but it's still a worthy entry in the genre.
