Acid King return with their fourth album, Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere after a gap of ten years, their last being 2005’s III. The San Franciscan doomsters clearly adopt the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach as nothing much has changed with the bands spacey stoner/doom sound.

What you get is eight tracks including the Intro and Outro of slow bottom end heavy psych tinged doom. It’s all heavy stuff and frequently locks into trippy instrumental workouts. It can on the surface all seem a little samey but repeated plays reveal some subtle melodies over the sludgy bass from guitarist Lori S who throws in some simple droning solos too. She also takes care of the vocals and while not having a great range her stark tones suit the music well enough and give the band a distinctive and easily recognisable sound.

If you’re already a fan of the band then you’ll almost certainly enjoy this one too but anyone sitting on the fence is unlikely to be swayed one way or the other. I enjoy Acid King but am unlikely to have a marathon back to back session of their albums, one being enough to satisfy my craving for this sludgy doom.
