Melodic black metal is fertile ground for genre crossover - after all, since pure black metal tends not to be very melodic at all, to add the melodic component artists often have to look outside black metal. Windir, for instance, accomplish this through the skilled incorporation of folk metal influences. Multi-instrumentalist Valfar (responsible for everything except the drumming and clean singing) uses his keyboards with restraint, eschewing the usual melodic black metal keyboardist showboating and instead using his synths to add an unusual twist to the Nordic folk passages on the album. An intriguing and unique sound which demonstrates that Windir are true originals and trailblazers.
