Psychotic Waltz is a progressive metal band from San Diego, California with a psychedelic atmosphere. They were formed in 1986 and recorded four inimitable studio albums in 90s. Original line-up includes Buddy Lackey on vocals, Dan Rock and Brian McAlpin on guitars, Ward Evans (Slojkowski) on bass and Norman Leggio on drums. In 1994 Ward was replaced by Phil Cuttino, and in 1996 Brian decided to quit the band, giving the place to Steve Cox.

The 1997 seemed to be the last year for the band. Initially Buddy has left the band, then Phil and Steve too. So during these years the band has split-up status. But there are some great news here in October 2009: Brian, Ward and Norm are practicing in El-Cajon and recording new material! If Buddy and Dan would mind to do this reunion, then long-awaited 5th album would include all the original members of the

In the beginning of the 90's I got into a serious 'metal state'. The reason was obvious. At that time it was the liveliest scene around. Prog had been gone for years, new wave was turning stale and the Happy Mondays were ruling the charts. In this climate also progressive rock morphed into its metalized shape: progressive metal. And next to pioneers like Dream Theater and Fates Warning there was also this less known but nevertheless marvellous band Psychotic Waltz.

Into The Everflow was the first Psychotic Waltz album I heard and it rocked my socks off. It's sure the most overwhelming prog-metal album ever for me. They play with considerable rhythmic and melodic virtuosity, yet balancing this against very subtle and intimate passages and very intense, expressive and original vocals. Imagine Ozzy could really sing and you're close.

The opener should be an immediate winner for all progheads. Gentle guitars and keys work against heavier sections. It changes into a huge David Bowie salute when the vocals kick in. The dead-heavy second track leaves no doubt that they are really a metal band. Be it one with an exceptional gift for original melodies, both in the eerie vocals as in the intricate guitar riffing that constantly progresses into new sequences. Inspiration for 5 albums on this one track.

Next on is Tiny Streams, a song with a huge Sabbath feel (even in the lyrics). It was the first song I heard from them and it immediately drew me into their weird psychotic sound.

The title track is probably everybody's favourite. It's an extended and brooding piece with beautiful picking on spacey guitar chords. About half of it consist of breathtaking harmonic guitar soloing. A typical feature of the PW sound but they never had it better then here.

Little People and Freakshow stick to the complex progressive metal style of Tiny Streams. In between sits a pleasantly lighter piece called Hanging On A String. A ballad that is as good as the sweet melancholic ballads that the Scorpions did in the 2nd half of the seventies.

Butterfly is the other long piece here. It goes through multiple changes, from an almost jazzy opening into something that sounds like Ozzy Osbourne doing some Jethro Tull Benefit chorus. Halfway in, on top of some great percussion jamming, an endless number of musical quotations are thrown into the mix. All too soon, the chorus is repeated and the 9 and a half minutes have passed already.

Despite their obvious influences Psychotic Waltz had an entirely unique sound. Maybe an acquired taste but if you dig it, you will probably find yourself entirely addicted. I'd say go in and discover them and who knows, you'll find yourself hooked forever. One of the best metal albums ever.

I was quite into Psychotic Waltz' first album, but I personally find the followup a bit of a disappointment. Musically speaking, it just seems a bit predictable and diluted compared to the debut album. Where's Buddy's flute playing to give a unique twist to the band's sound? What's with the constant flirting with mainstream metal? What's with the much more prominent Queensryche influence? I know the latter will appeal to many but personally aside from their first couple of releases I'm not really into Queensryche, which might be the source of my problem with this album; either way, it's hard to deny that without that flute in the mix the band's sound became significantly less rich.

Psychotic Waltz are a prog metal band who have a truly original sound, with psychedelic influences in keeping with their often-trippy artwork very much to the fore. Frontman Buddy Lackey also plays a mean flute in a style that is quite clearly influenced by Jethro Tull mastermind Ian Anderson (there's even a song dedicated to him on this disc!), and the juxtaposition of sometimes-thrashy often-proggy metal riffing and gentle flute creates an intoxicating mixture which both harks back to the glory days of 1970s prog rock whilst at the same time creating a combination of influences which is genuinely unique. An excellent debut which by all rights should have put the band in the first rank of the subgenre along with Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Pain of Salvation.

"A Social Grace / Mosquito" is a box-set by US progressive metal act Psychotic Waltz. The box-set was released in 2004 by Metal Blade Records.

Psychotic Waltz is one of the most unique acts when it comes to progressive metal. Their style is not easily explained and allthough it holds elements from the traditional part of the progressive metal genre, other influences are strong too. Especially on the early releases by the band, there are strong influences from both thrash metal, traditional heavy metal and power metal. Another influence is 70s progressive rock and hard rock. Lead vocalist Buddy Lackey has for example always stated that Jethro Tull is his favorite band. Buddy Lackey´s vocals and psychadelic tinged lyrics have always been defining for Psychotic Waltz sound and image, but the twin guitar attack by Dan Rock and Brian McAlpine is also a significant element in their sound. Norm Leggio on drums and Ward Evans on bass both have great importance and impact on the band´s sound. The sound that Psychotic Waltz create are more than anything a group effort. This is the kind of act where everyone works in union to create something unique.

This boxset consists of Psychotic Waltz debut full-length studio album "A Social Grace (1990)", their 3rd full-length studio album "Mosquito (1994)" and a DVD with the promo videos for "Faded" and "My grave" from the band´s 4th full-length studio album "Bleeding (1996)". There are also about 30 minutes of live materiel from the CD release party of "A Social Grace" featured on the DVD. Does this sound confusing to you? I think it does. Why on earth didn´t they release the two first albums on the same box-set? and number 3 and 4 together on another box-set. It must be quite confusing for a new fan to get album number 1 and 3 instead of getting number 1 and 2. Well...my issues aside this is still a great release and a great opportunity to get a couple of Psychotic Waltz albums that have been out of print for a while.

Let´s talk about the music then:

"A Social Grace":

"A Social Grace" is the debut full-length studio album by Psychotic Waltz. The album was originally released in 1990 and has strong influences from traditional heavy metal, thrash metal/ US power metal and a great deal of progressive rock/ psychadelic rock elements. Psychotic Waltz already had their own unique style and sound on "A Social Grace" as they´ve had on every album they´ve released.

The album starts with "...And the Devil Cried" which is a very powerful opener. It´s probably the fastest paced track Psychotic Waltz has recorded yet and it has parts that sounds like thrash metal/ US power metal, but also some pretty complex instrumental parts and solos that place "...And the Devil Cried" firmly in the progressive metal catagory. Buddy Lackey sings with a conviction that gives me goosebumps every time. A really good start to a great album. "Halo of Thorns" follow and it´s definitely one of the most beautiful songs on the album. It´s kind of a mini epic and it features a very dramatic and theatrical atmosphere, with Buddy Lackey singing both subtle and more commanding in the finale of the song. There are some beautiful acoustic work in "Halo of Thorns", but the song ends with some epic distorted riffing.

"Another Prophet Song" is a strong progressive metal track with a psychadelic middle section featuring percussion. Buddy Lackey sings some great vocal lines in this song. "Successor" is also a very powerful song featuring one of Buddy Lackey´s strongest vocal performances IMO. "In This Place" is a heavily effect laden track. The guitars are distorted (using phaser) in a special way in this song but it works perfectly. "I Remember" is the ballad of the album and it introduces Buddy Lackey´s flute playing. It´s a very beautiful song which is very obviously Jethro Tull influenced but ultimately sounds unmistakably like Psychotic Waltz. "I Remember" is definitely one of the highlight on the album. It turned out to be a live favorite for the band as well. It successfully provide a feeling of melancholy, nostalgia and longing.

"Sleeping Dogs" is a psychadelic keyboard intro to the next track "I Of The Storm" which is a strong track with some pretty heavy riffing. "A Psychotic Waltz" is a semi-ballad and stands out as being exceptionally beautiful. "Only In A Dream" begins with an acoustic intro and then into a more metal based song. Both "Spiral Tower" and "Strange" are psychadelic progressive metal tunes while "Nothing" is a more traditional heavy track.

The album features a pretty raw and unpolished sound production. I´m sure it´s was due to not having enough money enough pay for more professional sounding production. I want to emphasise though that the production does not ruin the music in any way. It rather gives the music an organic and authentic charm.

"Mosquito":

"Mosquito" is the 3rd full-length studio album by Psychotic Waltz. The album was originally released in 1994 and the direction the band took on the album was a bit of a shock for most fans as it is very different from the two previous album releases. "A Social Grace" and "Into the Everflow (1992)" are very different sounding too, but they a similar progressive and adventurous approach which doesn´t have in the same way. The music on "Mosquito" are more structurally simple than was the case with the more structurally complex music on the first two albums by the band and that´s probably the biggest obstacle for the fans, who at the time was expecting a very technical sounding progressive metal album, but ultimately got something very different from what they expected. The sound on "Mosquito" is mainly very different due to the fact that it was recorded and produced by Scott Burns at Morrisound Studios in Florida. The legendary Morrisound Studios is mostly known for the large number of thrash and especially death metal productions that they were involved in in the later eighties and early ninetes. Acts like Death, Atheist, Cynic, Napalm Death, Deicide, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, Monstrosity...etc. recorded albums in that studio. Most of them with Scott Burns as the producer. Most of the acts who recorded their albums at Morrisound Studios were notably more extreme than Psychotic Waltz. If you are familiar with Scott Burns productions, it´ll come as no surprise that "Mosquito" sounds much darker and much heavier than the sound on both "A Social Grace" and "Into the Everflow".

The music on "Mosquito" is generally much more psychadelic and dark than the music on the previous albums and the tracks are generally more vers/chorus structured. This doesn´t necessarily mean that the tracks are easily accessible though. This is still progressive metal with a relatively high complexity level. The album opens with the excellent title track which is played in some pretty odd time signatures but it´s generally a very catchy track. There are some great atmospheric samples in the song too. "Lovestone Blind" is a dynamic, heavy riff based and powerful track while the next track "Haze One" is more psychadelic tinged. "Shattered Sky" features a bit of flute playing by Buddy Lackey and I´d call that a psychadelic tinged track too. "Cold" is one of the highlights on "Mosquito". Great progressive metal song. Note how atmosphere creating the guitars are in the middle part of this song. The way those notes are played makes it sound like they float. "All the Voices" is another psychadelic tinged track on the album. "Dancing in the Ashes" is the most energetic track on "Mosquito" and a real rocker. Nice to have a song like that on an album that is mostly slow- to mid tempo paced. "Only Time" is pretty laid back psychadelic. Note those beautiful twin guitar leads near the end. It´s one of the few moments on "Mosquito" that reminds me sligthly of the guitar work on "Into the Everflow". "Locked Down" is a pretty heavy yet energetic song but not quite as energetic as "Dancing in the Ashes". "Mindsong" closes the album in epic style. It´s a unique song in Psychotic Waltz discography as it has a reggae rythm. There are lots of beautiful vocal parts and guitars themes throughout this song and it is generally pretty laid back and stoned yet with an epic feel. "Mindsong" is the longest track on "Mosquito" but it´s not as long as your CD player will tell you as there are a couple of minutes of silence before the hidden track "Darkness" properly closes the album. It´s a short Dan Rock synth composition.

Allthough "Mosquito" was a great disappointment to many fans when it was released, it´s an excellent album IMO and if you look at it in a retrospective light, there are not any other album that sound like it. This is truly a unique and innovative album. It´s neither the most artistically or commercially successful album by Psychotic Waltz, but if you ask me it´s an essential album in the history of progressive metal.

Bonus DVD:

Well... to be honest I´m not very interested in DVDs in the first place and when the material is as confusing and of bad quality as it is here, I think it´s more or less a waste of time. The promo videos for "Faded" and "My Grave" are allright but the "A Social Grace" CD Release Party Soma, San Diego 1991 is only a hardcore fan thing. The quality is too low to be of interest for anyone but the diehard fans. I can´t understand that promo videos from the band´s 4th album "Bleeding" ended up on an allready confusing box-set which consists of the 1st and the 3rd albums by the band. It´s a strange choise IMO. I try to see this is a bonus feature and of course you shouldn´t complain about a free DVD.

My overall impression of this box-set, even though the choice of material is a bit confusing, is that it is an essential purchase if you´re a fan of progressive metal. For fans of the band who already have the CDs it´s only the bonus DVD that holds any interest, and this feature is only for the diehard fans. Because of the format of the box-set with all the confusing material choices my rating would have been 3 stars if it wasn´t for the fact that the music contained within are some of the most essential progressive metal out there. You just gotta give Psychotic Waltz a chance if you have even the slightest interest in progressive metal IMO. 4.5 stars are deserved.

An album that too often settles into safe territory, but there are shining moments on “Mosquito”.

“Mosquito” is undoubtedly for this reviewer the worst of the 4 Psychotic Waltz albums, and they raised the bar so high with “Into The Everflow” that this is a major let down. There seems to be something missing here that is unmistakeable when one listens to the 4 albums back to back of this incredible legendary band.

It is not until I got to the third track that I even felt remotely interested. The sound is so different and less technical to the previous masterpiece. There are still some wonderful moments and I have to mention Haze One as one of the definitive highlights. A terrific lead break, aggressive riffs and powerhouse vocals drive it into your skull.

The quiet acoustic and flute on the following track Shattered Sky is a welcome change to all the intense metal. The gentle vocals are multi tracked as always and sound peaceful. The distorted riff locks in on the choruses, and there is a sense of tension and release as the flute chimes in over the verses. The melody line is quite beautiful in the ambient moments.

Cold has some inspired lead breaks but the vocals are sounding very similar and there is not enough variation. The multi tracked style is always present, and the riffs are overlayed and too dirty and I detest fade outs on metal songs.

Hopefully the next song will be as good as PW’s first albums. I listen with patience to All The Voices and I hear, a weird psychedelic carnival sound. Okay this is better, the vocals are estranged and have psych prog lyrics, “follow me into the day, won’t you open the eyes of your mind, follow me into the sun, all of my friends will be with me again.” The keyboard motif that make this sound unique is welcome. The whammy bar works overtime with lead flourishes, then it fades out before it has a chance to progress. Why? Where is the technical excellence and time sig wizardry of “Into The Everflow” or the debut?

The next track Dancing in the Ashes, has a fantastic fast and frantic riff driving it headlong. The vocals are more intense, and furious, the riffs are wonderful in the chorus and the lead break has some speedy little licks that are worth emulating. A highlight at last on the album, but it is only 2:31 in length! I don’t get it!

Next a slow crawling moaning track that grows on you eventually, Only Time, ironically with a simple time sig overall. I don’t mind this at all. The riff is rather Sabbath like and morbid. The twin lead break is sensational , perhaps the best from the twin lead virtuosos. Then it fades, I wish the guy on the fade out button was vaporised at this stage. It is a commercial device and not necessary for a band like this, effectively killing any chances of the band to break out into lengthy instrumentals or innovative time changes.

Next on the agenda is Locked Down and the riff is great, stopping dead while Lackey’s vocals rave on; “You better lock it down, well come on down, down , better lock it down, better lock it down, locked down, low to the ground, this town is burning down, so you better lock it down etc etc etc”. Anyway, the lead break is quite good though way too short. This is a repetitive song with too many vocals and not enough innovation but it doesn’t fade out at least.

Mind Song is the longest track at 6:08 so I was hoping for a myriad of time sig changes and complexity as with their last 2 albums. It begins with a Pink Floyd type feel, the melody sounds spaced out, the vocals are quite good. There is even a reggae style on guitars. The keyboards dominate for a while, then there is a very nice lead solo. The psychedelic sound is strong and it builds to a new time sig, hooray! The half time feel is really a song within a song but delightfully reminiscent of the usual Psychotic Waltz complexity. This is the problem. The band are capable of brilliance and too often settle into a safe straight metal sound. Nothing wrong with that if that’s what you want, but with Psychotic Waltz who are renowned for tech metal, most fans would be expecting the same technical excellence of the first 2 albums. The last song then is a real highlight, and even features a wah wah lead motif while a sustained lead solo rings over the top. The lead work is astounding and showcase the talents of Rock and McAlpin.

Well there you go. Still a good album but should have been better. Fans did not want an accessible album from the legends of tech metal. But we are stuck with it. The commercial approach did not do the music any favours and really if you compare this to the other 3 albums it is perhaps not worth considering for newbies to the band who may be turned off. It is not very progressive because the band does not utilise their talents in the same way as the first 2 albums. Still, this is a nice add on but definitely does not hold a candle to the other master class albums of the band.
