PARADISE LOST picture
Paradise Lost - initally one of the premier death/doom bands (along with their former labelmates Anathema and My Dying Bride) that later incorporated electronic elements in their music. They formed in 1988 in Halifax, UK. Along with bands like Dream Death, Sempiternal Deathreign, Asphyx, Winter etc... they are also credited for helping develop the subgenre known as "gothic" metal.

Ironically, the band is almost unknown in their home country, but in mainland Europe they have been extremely popular for many years, especially in Greece, Germany and Bulgaria (most of the people from Plovdiv town), where they are regarded as mainstream rock stars. Although they have also been partially attributable for pioneering gothic metal, throughout their career the band have also confounded fans and critics alike with their perpetual taste for reinvention and experimentation, a desire to work with producers from other musical genres, and an oft-stated refusal to repeat themselves

PARADISE LOST One Second

Paradise Lost's One Second sees the band more or less abandoning all pretence of still retaining elements of the deathdoom sound of their early years, instead offering up a jaunt through the heavier end of gothic rock - they remind me a little of a slightly heavier Fields of the Nephilim from around the Dawnrazor period. Purists who are very fond of the preceding albums like Icon or Draconian Times may feel a little betrayed by this one, but personally I find this style much more enjoyable than their murky deathdoom era. Approach with an open mind and don't on hearing anything that's especially like their preceding material.

"Lost In Time" is a free compilation sampler album released in June 2012 through Century Media Records. The sampler is available for free download (limited to 4,400 downloads) on Metal Sucks.net. In contrast to other compilations/best of albums "Lost In Time" does not necessarily feature the band´s best or most popular songs, but instead the compilation features 1 track from each of Paradise Lost´s 13 albums from "Lost Paradise (1990)" to "Tragic Idol (2012)".

"Lost In Time" is quite an interesting journey through the band´s discography and it successfully documents Paradise Lost´s development from a rather brutal doom/death metal act, to a gothic tinged doom metal act, to a fully fledged goth rock/metal act and back to a gothic tinged doom metal act. "Nothing Sacred" from "Host (1999)" is the odd one out here, with it´s pop flavoured Depeche Mode worship, but that of course goes for the full "Host (1999)" album, which is probably the most unpopular album in the band´s discography. Other than that one, "Lost In Time" features quite a few "classics" like "Eternal" from "Gothic (1991)", "As I Die" from "Shades of God (1992)", "True Belief" from "Icon (1993)" and "Say Just Words" from "One Second (1997)". Tracks like "Erased", "The Enemy" and "Honesty in Death" from later albums are also quality material IMO.

Rating a compilation is always a bit tricky. Overall the quality of the material ranges from great to mediocre, but if you take into consideration the purpose of a sampler compilation, I think "Lost In Time" fully succeeds in it´s mission to document the musical development of Paradise Lost over the course of their first 13 albums. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is warranted.

PARADISE LOST Tragic Idol

"Tragic Idol" is the 13th full-length studio album by UK, Halifax doom/goth metal veterans Paradise Lost. The album was released through Century Media Records in April 2012. After releasing more goth oriented material for a number of years/albums, Paradise Lost returned to a more doom oriented metal sound on "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us (2009)". They didn´t completely shed their goth metal leanings though and "Tragic Idol" somewhat follows a similar approach. Regarding the lineup the band have recruited former At the Gates, The Haunted and Cradle of Filth drummer Adrian Erlandsson to fill the vacant drummer position.

The music on the album is predominantly mid-paced doomy metal with gothic traits. Lead vocalist Nick Holmes sings using both clean vocals and more raw type singing. The riffs and rythms are heavy and there is an omnipresence of lead guitar themes on the album. the electronic/synth sounds that the band have used a lot on most of their post "Draconian Times (1995)" albums, are few and far between on "Tragic Idol", giving the album a more raw doomy edge just like the case was with it´s direct predecessor. the sound production is pretty clean and polished though so in that respect "Tragic Idol" isn´t that raw an album. If I have to mention a couple of new things I hear on the album it´s the use of more groove based riffing in tracks like "Crucify" and "Theories From Another World" and a more dominant use of double pedalling. The latter is probably the footprint of new drummer Adrian Erlandsson.

As far as overall quality goes I think "Tragic Idol" is a yet another good Paradise Lost album. It´s seldom excellent though but that can be said about so many of the band´s albums that "Tragic Idol" doesn´t stand out as something special in that regard. If you enjoyed the more doomy and guitar oriented sound of "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us (2009)" and imagine a more polished version of that album, "Tragic Idol" will probably please you too. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

PARADISE LOST Draconian Times

Just like their fellow British death/doom pioneers My Dying Bride had on their The Angel and the Dark River, Paradise Lost's 1995 release sees them locked in on a Goth-doom trajectory, with sonorously intoned vocals and crunchy riffs. Paradise Lost retain a bit more of the death metal sound of their earlier albums this time, whereas at this point My Dying Bridge had more or less completely abandoned sludgy death guitar, but otherwise if you like the one band's experiments in mingling the atmosphere of gothic rock with the techniques of doom metal you'll like the other's. Between this one and Icon, I think I mildly prefer this one, though neither gets me especially enthusiastic.

PARADISE LOST Icon

Paradise Lost are one of those bands I just don't get. On Icon they show off a fairly straight down the line doom metal sound vaguely reminiscent of early Cathedral, complete with mild death metal influences here and there. Sounds good on paper, but when I try to listen to the album every time it just leaves me cold. The production is rather average, and I guess some of the riffs here would be a bit more engaging if they didn't sound so flat, but on the whole I just don't get what's so groundbreaking about these guys. Certainly, this album is significantly less original and experimental than their first two works.
