Opening with Boris, a monster slab of doomy sludge as heavy as - well, as heavy as much of the output of the Japanese Boris, in fact! - the Melvins' Bullhead provides a tasty half hour or so of sludge metal with mild grunge influences which shows off their knack for sudden musical reversals. Take, for instance, the brilliant If I Had an Exorcism, which begins with nonsensical lyrics and avant-garde playing and then, in a particularly Mr Bungle move, mutates partway through its running time into some really tight riffing. I don't think it quite includes any iconic songs in the same way Houdini does, but it's still a fine example of the band's early work.
