Hellhammer was an early-1980s extreme metal band, hailing from Switzerland and popular briefly in Europe in the mid-1980s. They were a vital influence on black metal, death metal and doom metal, although their sound is most accurately described as mid-paced, proto-black metal (with exceptions such as the doom paced "Triumph of Death"). Members went on to form the massively influential band Celtic Frost.

Biography

Guitarist/vocalist Tom Gabriel Fischer (then known as Satanic Slaughter) and bassist/vocalist Steve Warrior formed the band in March 1982, originally naming it "Hammerhead". They were subsequently joined by drummer Bruce Day. In spite of their rather marginal musical and technical quality, demo tapes called Triumph of Death and Satanic Rites became underground, word-of-mouth hits and the band was eventually picked up by German-based Noise Records (1984). Having hovered somewhere between proto-thrash and proto-black metal on their demo releases (Triumph of Death and Satanic Rites), Hellhammer's sole professional release sits firmly in the black metal camp, with roaring, bestial vocals and a wall of sick riffs unlike anything seen in metal previously. Triumph of Death is a slower, doomier number, but for the most part the songs on here are fast, angry, and brutal in the extreme. The production quality is legendarily shaky, though still a great improvement over their demos, so this is a great pick for any Celtic Frost fans seeking to explore the band's origins.

The second demo from Hellhammer sounds a bit closer to the proto-thrash camp than the proto-black metal sphere to me - though with production this shoddy, it's honestly hard to tell. A little less interesting than the preceding Triumph of Death, there's plenty of Tom Warrior material from Celtic Frost and afterwards that you should probably track down before listening to this one - but when you get around to it, you'll find another key artifact of early extreme metal. Tracks of particular note include an early version of The Third of the Storms, which would feature prominently on Apocalyptic Raids.

HELLHAMMER Triumph of Death

Although some other so-called "first wave black metal" bands like of Venom and Mercyful Fate had released material earlier, both of those bands really existed more as proto-thrash units than as black metal groups; Hellhammer, conversely, have a much better claim for being the progenitors of black metal with this sick demo material (often combined with Death Fiend, which was recorded at the same time), which features bestial vocals and furious, driving rhythms underneath a sea of guitar sludge. As with Venom's debut, the production values are terrible - however, unlike with Venom, underneath the fuzzy production the band are clearly doing something truly unprecedented in metal at that time.
