The roots of Held Under began in the early 1980s when brothers Mike and Patrick Stevens started bashing out original tunes together at home in the small town of Preston, Washington, USA. Patrick played guitar while Mike sang and kept time by banging on whatever objects he could find. In 1983 Patrick met John Kirsch in a high school guitar class. Soon they were meeting to jam on their favorite hard rock and metal covers and eventually began practicing with other musicians. By 1984 they hooked up with drummer Scott Bender after placing an ad in a local magazine. Mike was then convinced to handle vocals and the four called themselves DISCOVERY.
