OK, difficult for most of us I imagine (was for me) but I just had to do it: Top five favorite metal albums. Could pick 50 but I really thought deep about those on a different level, and then the ones that touch me most out of those. You know Ben, those are actually 6 albums.  Right now, i can't number them. Would have to weight a lot of stuff to even think about a list. Ayreon and Dream Theater would be there, but there are a lot of other artists. . . -------------

I couldn't reduce my top metal albums to a top hundred, let alone a top five!!!  
Off topic: I am intrigued by your list and your musical journey Jonas, especially how other genres affected your taste. Interestingly my tastes were very much affected by similar things, the sheer brutality of the likes of Napalm Death to the grunge era and (strangely enough)Trip Hop. Yeah but in the last 5 - 10 years it�s like the circle is closed and I�ve returned to my metal roots more and more. With my involvement on MMA, that development will probably only continue. But who knows I might grow tired of metal again sometime in the future like I did in the mid to end of the nineties. I really couldn't give my top 5 metal albums right now. It constantly changes. Probably the most consistent presence on the list would be Master Of Puppets, although there is still the odd day where I convince myself that Justice is the superior Metallica album. Since my top five naturally changes, I'd pretty much say anything I've rated here (or will rate) that I give as much as 3.5 out of 5 or more has a shot at any given day of cracking the top 5. Sad Wings of Destiny is up there, so is Symbolic (Death) , Heartwork (Carcass), the first 5 King's X albums (the debut probably to a lesser extent), and many others. |

My top 5 metal albums: 1. Colors - Between the Buried and Me 2. Annihilation of the Wicked - Nile 3. Images and Words - Dream Theater 4. Sol Niger Within - Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects 5. s/t - Animals as Leaders By this site's standards I should have Tool's Lateralus and NIN's The Downward Spiral on there, but I personally don't think they're metal. But that's an argument fit for a different thread. ------------- Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. Just two short comments for the friends Umur and Stooge: Of course I'm a hardcore fan of Alice In Chains. I've always consider them as the best band of the scene of Seattle and speaking personally I was never care if people called them Grunge, Alternative or Super Duper Post Metal. For me Alice In Chains are an original Hard Rock/Metal band with some psychedelic and post-punk influences. And as about "Dirt" maybe it's their best album. And you don't have so often the opportunity to hear songs like "Rooster". My friend Stooge I totally agree with you. It is a pity that this album is not attracted people's attention as other albums by this band like "Parallels" for example. thanks Sieges Even is such an underrated band; The Art of navigating... was the first album I listened from SE, 4 years ago, it was a jaw dropping musical experience back then. Still is.

Here's my damn cheatin' list: 1. Iron Maiden: Most of their discography (except "Fear of the Dark, "The X-Factor", "Virtual XI", and "The Final Frontier" 2. Death: "Symbolic" 3. Judas Priest: "Painkiller" & "Turbo" 4. Megadeth: "Rust in Peace" & "Countdown to Extinction" 5. Metallica: "Master of Puppets" & "...And Justice for All" (apart from number one, it's pretty much random, as because I have so many favorite albums.... I'd probably have to do an unranked top 100 to give a more precise picture).
I like seeing that album getting some recognition :-)
Yeah, those albums are awesome, too - especially "Scenes from a Memory"; my favorite tracks on that one is "Fatal Tragedy" with its shrink 'n' grow section.
"Images and Word" is another favorite of mine. "Seventh Son...", like most other Maiden albums, is an important part of my life, and "Symbolic" is the work of a genious.
The epitome of heavy metal!
"Kill 'em All" certainly is one of the most important, if not the most important, thrash metal releases ever. And, it's nice to see "Ram It Down" receive a bit of appreciation (it's not my own personal favorite by Priest, but I do think that it's a bit underrated).
Lot of classics on that one. I personally love "Sweet Leaf" and "Children of the Grave".
Or "Killing Machine" in Europe. And, yes, this is another absolute classic with some friggin' gerat stuff on it... funnily enough, my favorite is the more commercial "Evening Star", because it's got a terribly catchy chorus.
They're all awesome albums. I prefer "Keeper... I & II" to "Walls of Jericho", but there certainly is a lot of good stuff on "Walls..." once one gets used to Kai's weird voice. I agree on your assessment of "Damnation"
Two classics (well a super classic and a cult classic) from legendary bands. "British Steel" is, of course, a milestone in metal music.
Heh, yeah "Stay Hungry" contains two of the best youth rebellion anthems ever, but the other more obscure songs on the album are pretty good, too. "Operation: Mindcrime" is great, and I listen to it quite often. I love Geoff Tate's performance on this record.
Two unquestionable masterpieces ;-)
I quite like "Toxicity", too, and "Individual Thought Patterns" is one of my own favorites... but I'm such a Death fanboy anyway. -------------

It's hard as hell right? I also tried to diversify mine from a variety of genre's. Also PTS isn't really a metal album  Skyclad eh? That is interesting. After reading the whole thread (not that it's that long), i decided to throw some freshness into it. 1. Beyond Twilight - For The Love of Art and The Making 2. Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes 3. Opeth - Blackwater Park 4. Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment 2 5. Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter Couple of runner ups that deserve to be in there (probably AES, or DT), but you can't beat math.

And thanks for injecting some freshness! I honestly can't pick 5 top albums..so I tried to vary mine with genre. Agreed about prog metal, I LOVE thrash but most extreme metal I have lost taste for now. Especially brutal tech ones. Prog metal is probably my favorite overall genre. Post metal is also amazing  and the current wave that is keeping metal fresh! ------------- Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal! I had thought about naming Paranoid instead of H&H (I prefer it to H&H), but I sais I was excluding proto-metal and Sab's Paranoid dated from 1970....
soooo I went with post-75 albums.
Maaan, I played that Sad Wings vinyl until my stylus made the vinyl so thin that the disc was becoming transparent.... I never found the same excitement my their other albums.

I only had Painkiller, Angel of Retribution (under rated/under known?) and British Steel which I actually am not a big fan of....My younger brother suggested I try Sad Wings and from listen one I loved it. We were gunna see the Judas Priest 3 year farewell tour but KK Downing has retired as we know....still gunna go for it but it's not quite the same : ( ------------- Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. I can not make one of my "Metal Top 5". There are days where I want to be a fan of Death and Black and days where only Hard Rock me like... Days Prog Rock (and Prog Metal)... In any case, these albums are recurring in my mind: 1. Macbeth "Romantic Tragedy Crescendo" (For the emotions it arouses in me) 2. Magnum: "Vintage Magnum" (For the music) 3.
