Many people on RYM voted up progressive metal on Ayreon's The Dream Sequencer as well, which is intentionally not a metal release (you couldn't even call it heavy rock yet alone metal). This sort of thing is unfortunately quite common. You want to know the worst one I ever heard? Someone who thought black metal meant metal played by black people. |

^Oh man I love those Black metal dudes (when they are actually serious about it, it´s just so much more hilarious to the rest of us  ). I saw Mayhem in the late 90s and they had meathooks hanging from the venue sealing with pigs heads and entrails hanging from them, and Maniac kept cutting himself with a knife. I was laughing my ass off during the entire show.
I saw them Again a couple of years later at a much smaller venue, and there were no entrails and pigs heads this time, but Maniac still did a bit of self-mutilation. He was so drunk/or fucked up on drugs, that he only lasted about 30 minutes, and then suddenly he fell to the stage, and had to be carried off by roadies. The other Guys in the band looked on while playing, and suddenly the bassist started singing the rest of the song they were playing. As far as I remember they played one more song, and then abruptly ended the show.
