I am currently listening to the album Greyest of Blue Skies from the Canadian band Finger Eleven.  They are listed as an alternative metal band on All-Music Guide.  I'm not quite sure how they might fit in here but I think that they do belong. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I was thinking that maybe alternative metal is similar to Nu Metal.  Not sure if this is correct or not.  But in so doing I saw that every prog fans' favorite alternative metal band Nickelback also wasn't included.  I've heard them called Nu Metal before.

Finger Eleven were lumped into nu metal when I was growing up, so either that label or alternative metal is a fair label.

Nickelback, on the other hand, I don't feel belong here at all.  Though you're right, I remember some magazines would lump them incorrectly as nu-metal along with a weird assortment of bands (Tool among them).  I think Nickelback have toured with metal bands, and are definitely influenced by metal bands from what i've seen in interviews, but are they metal? I don't believe they are.

Isn't Alternative Metal just Metal mixed with Alternative Rock? If so I don't think we should be lumping the two genres together. For example, Alternative Metal would be stuff like Faith No More and Helmet where as Nu Metal would be bands like Limp Bizkit and Slipknot.

Finger Eleven have been rejected for the time being, the explanation is very much the same as in the case of Alien Ant Farm:  http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=449&PID=11063#11063 - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=449&PID=11063#11063
