The title says it all - this is a place to discuss progressive metal in general. This is probably my favorite genre of music, combining my love for progressive rock and metal. We can discuss all types of prog metal here - prog death, progressive power metal, traditional prog metal, progressive black metal, ambient prog metal, progressive doom metal, etc....

Let the games begin Big smileRawks

im listening to Gojira now and they are awesome, i love their shugging riff, crushing beats and time shifts, great atmosphere, and complex structure.

Gojira is a uniqe band to my ears, they are killer live their drummer is sick (in a positive way), i only have From Mars to Sirius  and absolutly digs its sludgy riffs and colourfull details http://images.google.no/imgres?imgurl=http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/emoticon_rock.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/7558.htm&usg=__yCSVKNfDnO5yhyi0mMHx7gW2grc=&h=50&w=50&sz=1&hl=nn&start=19&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=I-LxqmAnUMHjrM:&tbnh=50&tbnw=50&prev=/images%3Fq%3Demoticon%2Bmetal%26start%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnn%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:nb-NO:official%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1 -   http://images.google.no/imgres?imgurl=http://www.pixeljoint.com/files/icons/emoticon_rock.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/7558.htm&usg=__yCSVKNfDnO5yhyi0mMHx7gW2grc=&h=50&w=50&sz=1&hl=nn&start=19&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=I-LxqmAnUMHjrM:&tbnh=50&tbnw=50&prev=/images%3Fq%3Demoticon%2Bmetal%26start%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dnn%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:nb-NO:official%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1">

One of my favorite bands that I learned of through PA is Psychotic Waltz.  Devon Graves, the lead vocalist, has the voice of Bruce Dickenson and plays the flute like Ian Anderson.  It's a perfect combination.

I haven't gotten into Edge of Sanity yet.

I probably prefer experimental metal, post metal, avant garde metal, jazz metal, etc. (all those experimental metal genres) over traditional progressive metal, but I still love all forms of progressive metal.

To me, the most exciting thing that is going on in the prog-metal world right now is that Pain of Salvation are releasing their album "Road Salt - Ivory" soon. Rawks Perhaps in May.

And I guess it's cool that Dream Theater are touring with Iron Maiden in a few months.

When it comes to Progressive Metal (or Metal in general) it doesn't get any better than Sigh. Imaginary Sonicscape is my favourite Progressive Metal album (well, it's tied with Back to Times of Splendor).

I also think some of the material Lamb of God have progmetal credidentlals, mostly their riffs are what i call complex, the drumming is quite impressive, and the overall sound is quite epic.

also LoG is avtuly not no painfull to listen to becouse the production is quite good so you hear all the instruments clearly so you get the neuances

In the worlds of progressive metal, Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye is a stand-out for me as are Taal's albums and Hoyry-Kone (though there we're more Prog than metal).

I never quite understood why Kayo dot is classified as metal. IMO they are more like an avant-garde mixture of rock, jazz and heavy metal. They are somewhere in between.

Hangman's Hymn is fenomenal, a masterpiece, awesome tracks like Finale: Hangman's Hymn/In Paradisum/Das Ende,Dies Irae/The Master Malice, Introitus/Kyrie.. Their new one is also astonishing though, one of the year's best so far

I love prog metal for the same reasons that I love prog rock: the complexitities, genre transgressions, and that it's typically different from other types of popular music - but then again, I've always thought that metal as such was more progressive than other genres of popular music. I mean the time changes and complexities have been there since the day of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and many extreme metal (and non-extreme metal bands) bands use completely unorthodox song structures. That is one of the reasons why I don't buy into the rigidity-of-meta- argument that I encounter in some prog rock circles. Also, how can an ever developing genre with so many subgenres as metal even be considered rigid?

Anyway. My favorite prog metal acts are the obvious ones: Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Psychotic Waltz and Queensrche. In addition, I like a number of progressive extreme metal bands like Cynic, Atheist, Obscura, Death, Invocator and Pestilences "Spheres" and progressive power metal bands like Symphony X and Anubis Gate. There are also bands which are not always considered progressive metal bands as such, but who, I think, a worthy of the progressive tag - namely Iron Maiden with their changes of tempo, epic tracks, guitar harmonies and so on, and Mercyful Fate with their completely different approach to song structures and Coheed and Cambria (who are probably not even considered metal by many) with their conceptual lyrical universe.

Progressive metal has been derided as being pretentious and all technique and no heart, but, to be honest, what I like a bout it is the more cerebral approach to music and all the thought that's behind the music. I do find odd time signature and unusual chord progressions and the like inspiring and I love the fact that many progressive metal songs have so many different parts that listening to one song equals the experience of listening to a whole album in other genres.

I'm there with you on all accounts, and more.  Except for that era of Pestilence Tongue But you know, I'll
probably get the 2 albums sometime in the future just to have those guys that pushed the envelope
long ago.

I love "Spheres" - it's so weird and jazzy. I love their other work, too (although I didn't dig their latest album immediately, but after a year or so, I'm starting to appreciate it), but I don't think they're as progressive as "Spheres". Well, maybe "Testinomy of the Ancients" could be considered kind of progressive with its use of keyboards and all the instrumental interludes and all that.

Just beginning with the whole prog metal thing at the moment. So just Dream Theater and its cousin, Liquid Tension Experiment for me. Odd as it may sound, I am not a big sound of 'traditional' prog-metal (i.e. in the DT mould), but rather of the more experimental bands - especially the instrumental ones. I have some problems with the typical singing style of traditional prog-metal bands, so I'd rather write vocals out of the equation altogether.

One of my favorite progressive-metal bands is Pain of Salvation. If you want to check them out, here's one of my favorite videos of theirs. But beware- The visuals of the video are kind of intense.

Though, Symphony X may be more of your style than Pain of Salvation. Symphony X are progressive-power-metal. They're my favorite progressive-power-metal band. Smile

I still can't believe that Riverside is beating DT on the Prog Metal poll at PA. Are all the DT fankids asleep at this time of year or something?

I am considering getting a second account in order to vote for DT!! LOL (just kidding, don't penalize me or anything!)Tongue

I am really pissed off though.... Riverside is alright IMO, but nowhere near THE defining prog metal band. Whether you like them are not, DT IS prog metal!!! Rawks

My FAVE Voi-Vod Album, though most fans will like it least, also hard to find in the stores (it may
have been re-released) and my CD came with 3D glasses for the Art in the Booklet Big smile.
Its their most progiest album thats for sure.  The last track "Jack Luminous" is EPIC and awesome!

And whats this about DT vs Riverside?  Both Bands respect each other and are completely
different Bands, maybe the DT fans are not voting because its a silly poll Confused.
Theyre BOTH awesome Wink.

Remember that DT are too metal for a lot of prog fans. Riverside, for what I know of them (and I'm really curious to see them at NEARfest in just one month's time), are more likely to appeal to the average prog fans, not just musically, but also on account of the vocals - which, in my humble opinion, are vastly superior to LaBrie's.

That's true... I'm not much of a fan of the Riverside/Porcupine Tree style, although I really like the newest Riverside album.

Have fun seeing them at NEARfest! My dad and I were going to see them in some local place, but you have to be 21 to enter.... that really pisses me off! LOL

Well, let's say that Mariusz Duda takes far less risks than Labrie : his singing is almost whisper-like and I can't sense any originality in his voice (sort of Wilson-like, wearisome and irritating). You can't deny that Labrie delivers some awesome singing on 'images and words' (that was a huge improvement on the bland Dominici) or you must be really deaf or abhor high-pitched vocals. I saw both bands on stage : I cannot say I got bored during the DT shows (I saw them twice), while there were moments when boredom grabbed me during the riverside show (which was not metal at all).

RIP Piggy!!! Disapprove  Voivod is great as well. I'm not the biggest fan, but I love Dimension Hatross!Big smile

Yeah the death of Piggy was a real blow. One of my favorite guitarists. A true inspiration on my own playing. Im about the worlds most dedicated Voivod fanboy. Not that I enjoy all their stuff. I consider Dimension Hatrss, Nothingface and The outer Limits to be undisputed masterpieces and Ive rated them all 5 stars on PA. Three of my favorite albums ever. Ill re-write my PA reviews before posting them here on MMA though as they were some of my first reviews written for PA and they are not very good. Killing Technology is an excellent albums too and Angel Rat is pretty good as well. The rest do not live up to the standard of those 5 magnificent albums but some of the other albums are pretty good too.

In my case, it's actually neitherWink. My hearing is very good, and one of my favourite singers of all time is Glenn Hughes - whose voice tends to be quite high-pitched, as I am sure you know very well. I just don't like LaBrie's style, even if on Images and Words his vocals are tolerable in comparison to the rest of the band's output. I suppose it all boils down to personal taste.

Posted By: MAVIIIVAM

And here I thought my hearing was good too, hmm . . .  Ermm-wha?
Over 30 years listening to Heavy Metal and collecting Albums = an experienced skilled labourer Wink.
I think something has been happening here at MMA too, knowing "music terminology" automatically
makes you an "expert" on what "Heavy Metal should sound like", well I dont have a tin ear and I do
play Guitar, even though I cant read like most Guitarists or play (most) others music, but I can
improvise my own . . . and I think thats more original (thats what folks keep telling me Embarrassed).
Most of what I play is influenced by Metal, but by no means is it conventional.

And Raff, how DARE you! "Personal taste"!? TREASON!!! LOL

I like Duda and Wilson very much, and I was actually upset that DT let Dominici go because I
purchased WDADU when it debuted.  But I acknowledge now that LaBrie "is" (imo) the voice
of DT.  But I would never call Dominici's voice on that album bland, it was his vocals that set
the tone for all the musicianship on their 1st outing for me.
Glenn Hughes laid down some varied styles with Coverdale in the Deep Purple days, and
his work with (2?) Iommi and Sabbath, I like him very much.
To me its all more a variety for Heavy Metal, its either I like or do not like . . . thats all Big smile.

But hey, Lucas, to each his own Wink.

Hey prog metal fans, anyone heard the russian band Mechanical Poet. On the fabulous french website guts of darkness their music is described as a cross between 'Harry Potter' and Pain Of Salvation, which is quite fair as they have a strong symphonic side on one hand and the vocalist switches easily from "quiet' to "harsh" and the "metal" music (as opposed to the symphonic one) bears some similarities with PoS on the other hand. I quite enjoy their album 'woodland prattlers' (I listened to it twice during my jogging)

Not sure their other albums are on par with this one.

Sounds very emo, a cross between Coldplay and Talk Talk (at least the only song I heard from them, see below). This performance was made during semifinal for EUROVISION (!!!!!) : from the obscure prog/alternative metal band to the mass appealing pop band ????

Yeah but . . .

You know, I had this idea, that if I had a Metal Band (Math Metal or Prog Metal), "we'd" write "1 Pop song" and that would "bring in a revenue" and exposure, but the rest of our material would be aggressive complex "Metal".  I'm sure this has happened before (The Band Filter comes to mind).

But the thing is with PoS, we know their history of Music, this is a way to expose the "heart" of the band that is more aggressive, but they are a band that never shyed away from ballad-like songs, usually they'd get a bit aggressive or "musical" within it.  I'm actually on the mailing list of Eurovision as well, have you "seen" and heard the other bands, all the damned cliche's about "Euro Groups" musically and the way they dress! Like an East German Block/Soviet 1980's Band! LOL What decade is it again?

As far as the new stuff, I have not heard the "Album" Road Salt, I heard the EP on my fave Internet Station and its like Queensryche becoming a "Grunge" Band (Post-"Promised Land), and I hope they dont end up like QR . . . Losing the brightness, musicality and power they once had.  I was VERY dissapointed with what I've heard on (PoS) the EP.
I hope the Album will be "different", but the power of PoS. Smile

Emo? Nah... the whole album sounds like a cross between 70's blues rock and modern pop/rock.

I'm pretty dissapointed by it... I loved all of their other albums, but this one just doesn't cut it for me.

I love Scarsick (I used to hate it, but I think it's a masterpiece now), and I've grown to love Road Salt One as well. RS1 is the weakest POS album to date in my opinion, but it's still a solid 4 star album from me. I can't wait until M@X implements non-metal reviews so I can post my review here at MMA.

other bands i often listen to - DT (especially the albums with Kevin Moore), Shadow Gallery, Circus Maximus, Riverside, Queensryche, Fates Warning, OSI, Redemption, Ark, Enchant, Psyco Drama, Thought Chamber, Sieges Even, Subsignal (from the ashes of Sieges Even), Psychotic Waltz/DeadSoul Tribe, Conception, Mindflow, Evergrey, Vanden plas, Dark Suns, Darkwater.

opeth is interesting, but unfortunately their evolution into progressive metal took that "something" away from them that made them tick

dream theater...well, their three last albums sound like their first three or four, but with different riff arrangements

i await the day when i will discover a more interesting band than liquid tension experiment (in my opinion, the most complete progressive metal band...and yes, i am a petrucci fan)

other interesting prog metal that i listen to a lot: necrophagist (brilliant technical death metal band), meshuggah (for their polirithms) and blotted science (started to listen to 'em 'coz of my jarzombek-fan era a while ago)

Anybody familiar with Heavens Cry ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/heavens-cry.aspx?ac=heaven - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/heavens-cry.aspx?ac=heaven )? They are a pretty unique progressive metal act. The melodies arent too obvious and their albums takes a bit of getting used to but thats what I like about them. The three guitarists in the band also gives them quite a unique sound. Oh and I enjoy that keyboards/ synths are only used occasionally.

If anyone enjoys Spiral Architect ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/spiral-architect.aspx?ac=spira - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/spiral-architect.aspx?ac=spira ), both Twisted Into Form ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/twisted-into-form.aspx?ac=twisted - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/twisted-into-form.aspx?ac=twisted ) and Manitou ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/manitou.aspx%29might - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/manitou.aspx)might be interesting too. They are related acts. Twisted Into Form is pretty similar in style while Manitou is more like a technical Fates Warning sounding act. Manitou share vocalist with Spiral Architect.

Psychotic Waltz is a fave of mine. One of the most unique sounding prog metal acts. I saw them live twice ( got two tour longsleeves to prove it Smile) and they were great on stage too. I guess bad promotion and worse distribution killed them in the end ( and something about a law suit from a former roadie if I remember correctly). Really sad they never got the recognision and commercial success they deserved. Im still dreaming of a reunion.

Its been a while since I gave Pain of Salvation a chance ( I reviewed the debut album for PA a while back, but wasnt too thrilled), but Ill give the albums a spin sometime in the future to see if I dig them better now. Sometimes a little time between listens helps.

Ive listened to a lot of Symphony X but not so much in the last 5 years. I just havent been in progressive metal/ power metal mode in a while.
