My expectations are fairly low. Only really enjoyed Kill Em All and Master of Puppets from them and their new stuff is just...bleh. -------------

It's worth noting that I actually do enjoy Death Magnetic a fair amount... St. Anger, Load, and ReLoad are extremely far from favorites of mine, though. I could see this one either being somewhat interesting or an absolute disaster. While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed. Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week. A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. The riffing wasn't all that bad, but Lou's voice has definitely seen better days. If all the songs have that spoken-word quality to them, it's a definite miss. As a Metallica fan, I'm taking this as proof positive that the band still haven't regained the good taste or sound judgement they lost after their first few albums. As a Lou Reed fan, I despair that Lou is rehashing Berlin, only without the trashy depressive glam veneer that made that album awesome. Then again, Lou's been hasn't written a decent song himself for a long time and is more or less out of ideas by now. Can't say I'm 100% surprised that it sounds this bad. The more Lou and Metallica went on and on in interviews about how it was great stuff and they had a blast making it and they're really proud of it and the collaboration totally paid off, the more it sounded to me like the album stank, they knew it stank, but they're desperately hyping it in the hope that people would buy the thing before realising how much it stank.

Some of the chill stuff at the end of the album I think is actually pretty good, fitting more naturally with Reed's vocals.
