A place to talk about anything involving film and TV shows.

First item on the agenda: is Disney doing it's best to ruin franchises?

MCU: Fires James Gunn over years old tweets, now Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the most beloved internal MCU franchises, is on hold with actors talking about leaving.

Stars Wars: Completely cancels the James Mangold directed Boba Fett movie, which was clearly among the most desired spin-off films fans wanted to see.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Apparently they are rebooting the franchise with the sixth film without Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow.

Discuss and you know, talk about anything else film and TV related. Tongue

Well...to me Disney has destroyed Star Wars. There´s something fishy about the new movies that I just can´t stand. Even number 1, 2, and 3 were better than the rubbish they call number 7 and 8.

Pirates of the Caribbean without Jack Sparrow? Hard pass. Depp is pretty much the only reason some of those sequels were worth watching.

I have to catch up on the PotC movies, but yeah, hard to imagine w/o Depp as Sparrow.

Also I like the new Star Wars movies, though nothing beats the original trilogy. I thought Solo was actually really good and didn't deserve a lot of the flak it got, which I'm sure was more on behalf of The Last Jedi.

And as for Marvel movies, it does suck that Guardians 3 got delayed since apart from Avengers 4 that's probably my most anticipated confirmed returning sub-franchise of the MCU: I've seen nothing on further solo Iron Man, Captain America or Thor movies which is pretty much the old guard of the MCU now and the first movies of Doctor Strange, Spider-man and Black Panther don't stand out for me as well as their acclaim implies they should (especially Black Panther). Guardians 1 & 2 are two of the most outright entertaining movies the MCU though, so yeah, definitely sucks that they delayed it. I am interested in Captain Marvel though as it's about time the MCU had a female hero with a solo film.

Just managed to pick up the DVD of Hereditary for just £0.99 in a second hand shop. Shocked Not even been out a whole month yet.

Looking forward to watching this one - heard very good things about it.

I was pleasantly surprised by Solo. I thought it was a pretty entertaining movie. Much better than The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which I found pretty disappointing. Rogue One and Solo are a different story though. Both great films in my book.

Aren't a lot of them? Anyway, I already watched it. I enjoyed it though I think I need to watch it again to really get what it was all about. Plus I was sleepy during the second half.

I'll bet any money they don't make a second one though, despite the cliff-hanger ending and 'real big bad' reveal. I don't entirely blame Disney; I think fans did the franchise a disservice by boycotting Solo (Though it probably was a mistake as well to release it so close to Infinity War and Deadpool 2). I also can't help but wonder if it's more lukewarm critical reception was to do with the fact that critics lauded The Last Jedi as the best Star Wars film ever made only to have that claim thrown back in their faces by fans.

Well I reached a movie milestone today: I've now seen 1000 movies in my lifetime. Thing is, about half were only watched for the first time this year! I had a movie phase quite a few years back when I watched quite a lot of films, mostly horror and sci-fi, but until recently the majority of movies I had seen were family movies that I grew up with. This movie phase shows no sign of wearing off either, so maybe I'll hit my next milestone before next year is out.

I got 130, which is honestly more than I would have expected. I've watched barely any movies (or TV shows) in the past few years, because at this point, I'd rather play videogames than any other form on entertainment, because the whole interactive aspect draws me in far more than any non interactive story ever can. There's also quite a few cases where I've seen some movies in a series, but not everything.

The one near exception is Star Wars, where the only one I haven't seen is Solo, which is partially because I think it's an unnecessary cash grab, but also because anyone but Harrison Ford playing Han Solo is pure sacrilege, imo. That's really the main reason: I watched the trailer, decided the actor had NOTHING to do with the character in any way, and decided not to waste my time watching the movie.

Have any anyone here seen the Kristen Bell starred series, the Good Place. Pretty funny and with an original and fresh take on humor, not seen any series quite like it that arrent animated ( like Adventure Time). Abrupt twists and turns and stuff happens out of no where. Very quick humor were they forst time ive seen used real life philosophers as plot devices, never seen a series were Kant, Hume and Stuart Mill being referntsed.

Wonderful characters whom develop interestingly and a suprising twist in the last episode.

I had read that The Expanse season 3 was finally being released here today but the clock is ticking and still nothing, as usual. I see that Prime customers in the US have indeed got it today which I actually think is bullshit as the US has had the series on its original channel months ago. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is still waiting and have even had access to the first two seasons taken away from us.

I'll be honest, I pirated it months ago. I don't even expect to see it legitimately before next year at the earliest now and maybe not even then on streaming: they've been quick to release DVD's here for seasons one and two since the new deal, which were never available before. November 2019, that's when we get season 3 I believe. I hope I'm wrong, but that's actually the only date they're giving the UK to see season 3 in any form.

If you really want to see it, pirate it. They're doing nothing but encouraging it.

I really hope you're wrong about that. I'm a paying Prime customer, I should be able to watch a series Amazon now owns, regardless of what country I'm in. Regardless the November 2019 DVD release date is definitely an insult to UK fans of the series. I wouldn't object to buying the series on DVD (but it really should be on Prime too by now) but imposing another whole year of waiting? I don't want to pirate, one because I'm not a thief and two because I think the quality will be shitty, but I also won't wait that long.

I probably am wrong. I'm just being a cynical old bastard. Tongue

It is getting well beyond a joke now though. I think what makes it worse is that Amazon is pretty much not saying a damn word on what it's plans for the series are outside the US. Clearly the international deal with Netflix is no longer in place. But as you point out, why take seasons one and two away and not make them available on their own service right away?

Posted By: adg211288
Date Posted: 16 Nov 2018 at 1:16am
With season 2 there was some sort of exclusivity period for the original channel before the season could be shown internationally, which was why Netflix took so long to get it. Maybe that still has to be honoured in some way before Amazon has release it across their international sites, UK included? They always did have streaming rights in the US and maybe that means they could release it there earlier.

Netflix just cancelled Daredevil after its best season yet. Shocked

I can't help but wonder if these systematic cancellations of all their Marvel Cinematic Universe shows have something to do with some sort of pressure from Disney due to them developing their own streaming platform. It just makes no sense otherwise. Iron Fist, sure, I can understand ditching that one since people didn't seem to like it as much in general, but Daredevil and Luke Cage are two big deal Netflix Original shows and Luke Cage especially didn't have a satisfying end. It literally needs a third season.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear next that Jessica Jones season 3 and The Punisher season 2 are cancelled before they're even aired and maybe have development halted on them.

It would suck if this really was all some move on Disney's part to continue all these characters on their own streaming service as they've already said that they absolutely will not host any mature content on it, so if they continued any of the shows they'd tone them down to the same maturity level as the MCU movies - which I love, but the style wouldn't suit these characters so well. Worse still they might reboot them and recot the Netflix shows out of the MCU official canon.

That really is annoying. If Disney takes these shows on would they buy the storyline and cast? You can’t recast these. And you’re right, these aren’t kids shows.

Posted By: adg211288

It sucks anyway that we're all going to have to pay for Disney's streaming service (Disney+) if we want to see its new MCU content and Star Wars content (including The Mandalorian), which it's already confirmed exclusives for. That's if we even get it over here. So far they've only announced it for the US. Regardless we already pay for Sky, Netflix and Prime in my house - my point being that it's all going to get too much if every major studio suddenly decides to cut ties with the established providers and start their own platform.

You get it in PC gaming too but it's more of an annoyance there rather than a money issue since you still pay by the game, but it doesn't half make everything disorganised when you get the EA's that won't release on Steam anymore and the Ubisoft's who will release on Steam but still insist on having you install UDon'tPlay, sorry I mean Uplay, before you can use your games.

Yeah, all these services are getting way out of ahnd, I think. I mean, I don't watch a lot of TV or movies nowadays, anyway, but one reason why is because I'm kind of scared off, in the sense that in order to watch every movie or show I'd be interested in, I'd need to pay for so many different services, it would just get nuts, because they're all scattered on different services, instead of being available in one place. It's utterly ridiculous.

And yeah, even for gaming it's getting silly. I don't care for EA and play Ubisoft games on PS4 (if at all), but one game I got could only be bought on Discord, if I played the PC version, meaning I literally had to use a whole different program I'd never used before, just to play one game, which is just plain silly, imo. I did use it, and it did work fine, but it's still kinda stupid.

Just seen the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame (yep, that's the title). Doesn't reveal much as you'd probably guess for a trailer released this early, but the name got me thinking, maybe they should be letting the MCU lie after this film and go out on a high? I know they have hell all movies planned post Phase 3, but I fear the quality will soon start to dilute after 22 movies (which they'll be at with Avengers: Endgame).

Since they're continuing the MCU for the long haul I hope they've got some major reinvention plans for Phase 4.

It's been an incredible feat of filmmaking to have made so many movies in the franchise already when the worst of the bunch is at least a passable movie. They're probably good for a few more, though this does feel like a logical end point for the series to me. But I guess they want to feature Captain Marvel more after this. Maybe in the future they'll give the movies more of a stand-alone feel.

I doubt we'll see new solo films from the original stars of the MCU like Iron Man (rumored to die in this one, even before that trailer), Captain America and Thor. If they survive the events of Endgame they may show up in guest roles. I know Chris Evans completed his contract with Infinity War and is only in Endgame because it made sense to be in it. Doesn't sound like there are any plans for Captain America to appear beyond this point.

Netflix dropped the movie Bird Box today. I haven't watched it yet but based on the clips I've seen it looks like A Quiet Place except you can't see instead of can't make a sound. I'll reserve judgement until I watch it, but it does seem very similar in concept.

Bloody furious right now: I managed to finally pick up what I thought was a copy of Hitchcock's Psycho this morning (after bloody years of searching and never finding one) and just stuck it on a few minutes ago only to find that to my surprise it wasn't the original film in the box, but the 1998 remake (which I've heard is rubbish). Really fuming as the disc in the box has the name printed on it in the exact same font as the DVD cover, so unless you read the small print on the actual disc (and hands up who does that in second hand shops?) there's zero way of telling it isn't the right version for the case until you try to play it. Angry

The 1998 Psycho is probably one of the most pointless movies ever made. It's not *technically* bad since it's a shot-for-shot remake of the original, but then in that case, why wouldn't somebody just watch the original? I never understood the logic behind making the film

Not unexpectedly, Netflix has now announced the cancellation of The Punisher following it's second season (which I haven't found time to start yet) and Jessica Jones as well before season 3 has even been released.

What a sad state of affairs for a largely promising MCU sub-division. There have been hints dropped that these characters may continue on Disney's new service but since Disney says they won't release anything remotely mature on that, you just know that if they do they're going to water them down considerably.

In other news though Netflix seemed to be renaming The Haunting of Hill House to just The Haunting and will release a second season based on something else entirely, like they're trying to make it their answer to American Horror Story. Should be good, however, if they can make something as high quality as Hill House again.

So apparently Arrow is going to end after a much shorter than normal final season. This certainly seems to add weight to the rumour that Oliver won't survive the next crossover event (which if going true to the comics, neither Barry (The Flash) or Kara (Supergirl) should survive).

So Star Wars Episode IX is called The Rise of Skywalker.

The title sounds really dumb to me.

Some fucking arsehole just posted what happens in Avengers Endgame on Facebook in a completely unrelated place (on a post about the game Rage 2) and in image format with giant glaring letters about who dies. Haven't even seen Captain Marvel yet. I didn't think I would avoid spoilers until the movie is out on DVD, but fucking release day? Someone should reserve a special circle of hell for this prick. Unless it's fake, but in which case why bother? And if true I also just felt my anticipation for the movie drop a couple of notches.

Yeah, spoilers for that kind of thing are ridiculous. It didn't effect me, because I have no plans on watching the Avengers movies, but I had a couple deaths for Infinity War spoiled right around when it came out, just from watching some game stream.

That's why, even though I didn't have HBO for a while and don't really use it much, I made sure to get it at least through April and May, and I'll watch each episode of Game of Thrones right when they air, because I find if I wait even an hour or two to watch that show, there's a very high chance of getting it spoiled, which would really piss me off, at this stage in the series. (Speaking of which, since I think the UK probably gets the episodes a bit later, you'll want to be extra careful with the upcoming episode, since it's the big battle, and you wouldn't wanna have that spoiled, obviously.)

I saw Endgame today.

In many ways it did live up to its hype, but it also has significant problems that for me, preclude it from being a masterpiece. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how I can elaborate on my feelings further than this without spoilers (seriously why the hell does this forum NOT have spoiler tags?). Let's just say there was a ton of characters I could have lived with being killed off for good and just one that I really couldn't. They killed off the one. It isn't just a personal favouritism issue, killing this one character makes zero sense given what we know about Phase 4.

Got my first taste of Italian Giallo movies yesterday. Think I've found my next film noir, meaning a new genre for me to delve extensively into. The two I've watched (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times and Tenebrae) both have some really corny violence but both plots were very intriguing and they both had pretty epic soundtracks.

I have Deep Red lined up to watch next, which is supposed to be the best of the genre.

So, Marvel is pulling what I consider a real sneaky one: Phase 4 MCU movies that tie directly to Disney+ TV shows. Meaning that if you don't watch the shows, you're going to miss details for the movies. This is completely unlike the now axed Netflix MCU roster that referenced the movies but had it's own internal continuity.

So far this seems to mostly only affect the second Doctor Strange movie which has been confirmed to feature Scarlet Witch and follow on from the WandaVision TV show.

What concerns me the most here is that there are absolutely zero announced plans as far as I can tell for Disney+ to be anywhere but the US so it's completely up in the air how anyone else in the world will get to even see these shows. And I wasn't bothered about that, until they made this move.

Also, even if Disney+ does come to the UK, it seems unreasonable to have enough TV subscription coming into the house. We already pay for Now TV, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Yeah Disney Plus is yet another platform after your money. It’s getting expensive. And the Disney part-owned Hula are trying to get in on the act with their own Marvel-related planned offerings. I was actually disappointed that Marvel didn’t consider the Netflix characters part of the MCU. Luke Cage is a long-standing Avenger in the comics and the other three were Avengers too at some point. Even the Punisher linked up with the group at least once. Be good to have seen Daredevil and Iron Fist on the battlefield in the last. Avengers film.

I really don't know why they have to change the formula and make the TV shows an official part of the Phases. Three Phases have worked perfectly well with just movies and the shows being on the side.

More than that, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, WandaVision and Loki could easily be legitimate film projects. It's only the animated What If series that actually seems like it should be a series and not a movie. And that's not even canon so why does it need to be a main part of Phase 4?

They've lost the plot.

That said, I'm looking forward to some of these projects though I'm sceptical of the next Doctor Strange movie since they've said it's going to be closer to a horror movie yet also sworn that they aren't going to make anything rated above 12. Same goes for the eventual introduction of Blade.

Looking forward to the Blade film. Enjoyed Wesley Snipes' interpretation but just wish they'd stuck to him being a British character - he's not meant to be an American. If Cumberbatch can do a US drawl for Doctor Strange, I'm sure Snipes could put a cockney twang on. And it would be better as an 18 too.

Honestly not much gets an 18 rating these days. I mean look at Deadpool 1 & 2. There's no way those movies would have got away with only 15 a decade ago. I'd be happy with a 15 rated Blade (I think Blade Trinity was 15 rather than 18). Honestly I think the upcoming Black Widow movie should be 15 as well since it's supposed to deal much more in depth with the spy side of the character, but they already said that it had been ordered to be capped at 12.

I haven't seen Endgame yet and obviously not Far From Home either, although I know what happens in Endgame thanks to a prat on Facebook posting spoilers for it on completely unrelated posts on release day (I have managed to avoid Far From Home spoilers, so far though). Honestly given what I accidentally found out about Endgame I'm still having trouble reconciling with a certain character's demise given who one of the movies is about (we all probably know who I'm talking about but just in case someone else here hasn't seen it yet or had it spoiled...). Is this to mean that Phase 4 onward is just going to be disjointed with no new arc to follow the Infinity Saga? It seems weird to have this movie now given the events of Endgame.

I'm generally against character resurrections because it cheapens their loss but I do tend to think that if there was one character in the Endgame line-up that they shouldn't have killed off...

I'm starting to feel like the MCU may begin to crash and burn in Phase 4. Just learned that the Disney/Marvel and Sony deal has broken down and that Spider-man is going to be removed from all future MCU instalments (unless they reach a new agreement). Maybe they should really have just called the franchise a day with Endgame.

I'm not really interested in the MCU, but that is lame, and it always sucks when fans essentially get screwed over, because some big corporate heads are too greedy over exactly how many millions of dollars they'll make off of something. It'll be funny to see how they retcon Spider Man out of future MCU movies, though, or how they retcon other characters out of Spider Man. What they should do: Have Spidey become cocky and think he needs to be paid a certain amount of money in order to help them, they refuse, and so they never help each other again. That would be accurate enough, I think LOL

So unless they're leaving an announcement to the absolute last minute, it looks like the UK's Sky One is fucking up the Arrowverse this season. Reason? Batwoman. Absolutely no word on showing it even though Supergirl, Flash and Arrow all have known air dates in the UK now and Batwoman starts the same time as them in the US (a few days ago) and is supposed to take the second episode slot in the big crossover event this year.

It seems bloody odd if they haven't picked it up, but even odder if they have and haven't even announced anything about it yet, with Supergirl returning in under two weeks.

So apparently this isn't Sky's fault - the US hasn't even given them the option to take the series. Instead they're holding it back from the UK for their own new platform which doesn't and won't exist within the next two weeks, causing chaos in December when the crossover starts because we will NOT be getting episode 2 of 5. The new platform will likely be another case for extra subscription fees on top of that.

Give me one good reason to watch any of these shows this season now.

Someone must really hate us Arrowverse fans in the UK. Not only is there still no sign of Batwoman, there's now no sign of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover at all. Media outlets have reported that we will still get episodes 1 and 3 next week. This turned out to not be the case with the release of next week's tv guide.

If it's being held back to try to get the Batwoman fiasco sorted out, then fine, but I really don't know how it's going to be possible to avoid spoilers from the US. I already found out a major one just by trying to research when (or rather, if) we're even going to get to see any of the crossover in the UK now.

lol just noticed a major casting error in the DCEU. Now I'm okay with recasting actors when necessary which it is in this case because it's for a much earlier set movie, but some effort much surely be made to make it believable right? Not for the DCEU it seems.

The character is James Gordon. In Justice League he was played by J.K. Simmons. In next year's The Batman he will be played by Jeffery Wright.

Can anyone see the problem here?

Not really sure what to think about this. If the movies didn't exist in the same continuity it wouldn't be a big deal, but they do. Major oversight? Politically correct casting gone mad? Or is the character the DCEU's answer to Michael Jackson?

But most likely the DCEU team just realised by now that they really screwed the franchise up as a whole already so may as well just do an anything goes approach. LOL

Most people did not like Justice League so maybe they figured no one would notice if a character who didn't play a big role in that movie was suddenly a different race in the prequel Batman movie. Couldn't care less to be honest. I highly doubt this movie is going to rival Nolan's trilogy, which I think are and will remain the ultimate in DC movies.

But yeah it is an odd choice considering they already established the character as white in this canon. I think Jeffery Wright is a good actor and will play the part fine, though.

Yes I'm sure he will too, but I can't help but wonder if this is some misguided attempt to tell us that we shouldn't be seeing colour when we look at people, which I don't personally think helps any racism issues. There is political correctness, which really should be synonymous with common sense and decency and there is stupidity. And the human race as a whole feels more and more like the latter every day to me.

But I'm not going to pretend that the biggest issue for me personally in this example is that discontinuity in a franchise is a major pet peeve of mine. Filmmakers should know their franchise and not expect us to believe that a black character grew older and became a white man. That's really all there is to it.

Our most used MMA themed list remains the Trad Heavy Metal challenge with 363 users and counting.

A miserable 17 for me. There's quite a few there I really should have seen, especially some of the older ones.

Fortunately I can get back on Netflix tonight after not having it for 8 days due to my Virgin Tivo box having an error. Had them booked in today to come and repair it and it started working again by itself last night. Hopefully it won't go wrong again!

It was only a matter of time before a major celebrity contracted it. Hopefully he will be OK, his wife too who also has it. And anyone else who gets it. Hope all you fellow MMA'ers are taking as many precautions as you can during this time and remember that thinking smart and staying calm is absolutely necessary right now.

So Batwoman is finally starting in the UK. One day before Supergirl returns with Crisis on Infinite Earths Part 1, with Part 2 now not scheduled until 8 weeks later.

More important things to worry about in the world right now, but seriously, how hard can it be? Hope Sky/Now-TV doesn't rub further salt into the wound by expiring the episodes of the rest of the shows too quickly, otherwise Batwoman's episode is getting pirated. Don't bloody care at this point.

I finally got round to watching Lords of Chaos. I can see why the remaining members of the Black Circle didn't like it much.LOL

Even with all the creative license taken with the film, no one really comes out of it looking too positively. I don't suppose that was the point of it all, but it reinforced what I felt about it at the time - a bunch of kids playing silly games that got out of control, but who produced some aesthetically original and edgy music, albeit with somewhat questionable themes at times.

I loved the brutality of the murders and suicide, not for the sake of violence and brutality, but because of the stark contrast with the almost comicbook silliness and posing which accompanied so much of the image and "aura" created. Compare it to the splatter films which various people were watching throughout the movie (including the lawnmower scene from Brain Dead!) Yes, blood does spurt out of living bodies like that if you make holes in them with knives or guns, and those things are for keeps - the dead don't get a second chance.

The saddest thing about the killings and the posturing is that the music will always be tainted by that. Some people will be attracted to it for the danger and edginess of it - the bands with the Dead singer, or the burning church, on the album covers - and not for the sounds contained within those covers.

Anyway, I went into it with some reasonably strong preconceptions, and none of them were disproved or much altered by the movie. And I still have the Kerrang! magazine with the interview in question in it.Cool

Holy crap, Chadwick Boseman (Marvel's Black Panther actor) died yesterday. Shocked Apparently he'd been battling cancer for four years and had kept it from the media, working through it in all h's major films since including Black Panther itself. Damn. Very sad and shocking.

Just belatedly found out that Netflix cancelled Altered Carbon.

The list of Netflix Original shows actually worth a damn grows ever smaller.

If all these rumours flying around about the next MCU Spider-Man movie are true it's either going to be the best thing ever or the biggest crash and burn the franchise could possible do. I feel equal hype and worry. And if they really are doing a Spider-verse thing so soon after Into the Spider-Verse then there are going to be inevitable comparisons made and people usually seem to love that movie above all other Spider-Man movies so I have trouble foreseeing comparisons coming off favourably to MCU Spider-Man 3.

What we do know so far is that Jamie Foxx is playing Electro again as in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Alfred Molina is playing Doctor Octopus again as in Raimi Spider-Man 2. And we already had J. K. Simmons back as J. Jonah Jameson in the last one. So it does all seem to be pointing toward Spider-Verse.

That's not real, obviously. But it's a pretty good poster I mostly lean toward hoping is onto something.

My movie collection is now one title away from hitting 1000 again.

I got rid of quite a lot of DVDs and even a few blu-ray during the first UK lockdown, but my space has gradually been filled back up (and extended).

I have no idea what my 1000th movie in the collection will be.
