Don't you love how arbitrary this question is?

In response to the eternally negative "least metal" poll, I made the significantly more positve "MOST METAL" poll.

So, which metal genre do you think is most metal? I went with thrash.

Obviously I LOVE prog metal and some of it can be really damn metal! Headbanger
But in spirit....yeah deff not the most metal. Especially since us prog metallers are in the minority.

This is a tough one.
I guess the MOST METAL genre has to be traditional metal.
Sounds silly but they did invent it LOL I mean they were the original metal, how can you be more metal!? Most metal guitarists owe it to Iommi so yeah...traditional gets my vote.

Thrash is a close second. Due to it's obvious metal-ness but also since it grew from NWoBHM (which is traditional!)and was an attempt to keep metal "pure". Not like all that artsy pretentious prog rock crap that was popular by the late 70's Wink

I see someone didn't like my poll Tongue

Had to go for thrash. All extreme genres (even doom and sludge) have thrash elements, and when I think of a standard metal band, I think thrash. Almost picked death, but I'm biased towards that anyway.

Sure, everything ultimately came from traditional heavy metal, but the first of anything rarely becomes the standard example, IMO.

NWoBHM.

No Question.

It encompasses the roots of every single genre that now exists, from the black metal of Venom, the speed metal of Vardis and Jaguar, tech metal of diamond Head and Raven to the squeaky clean pop metal of Def Leppard, with the traditions of Iron Maiden, the close ties with punk in Motorhead and (oft-overlooked) Saxon running through the middle like a core of steel.

NWoBHM is everything - it's not a style or genre. It went beyond embryo - it embraces egg, chick, fledgeling and parent bird. The Eagle Landed And Took Off Again.

Or some such.

That's what I voted, anyway.

I dared to vote for Progressive Metal because most of the genres and style above have some punk in them including New Wave of British Heavy Metal. However, old school Progressive Metal such as early Fates Warning, Watchtower, Mekong Delta, or Abraxas. As far as I know, Motorhead began fusing Metal with punk. When there is a New Wave of British Heavy Metal then there must also be an Old Wave of British Heavy Metal. Proto-Metal, Hardrock, Doom Metal, and Progressive Metal/Hardrock were mostly the styles in the 70s.

Progressive, Neo-classical metal, and doom metal are for me the most metal of the genres, because it is pure metal which depends on the guitars. Metal is guitar oriented music like Flamenco is guitar based music. The metal that depends on the guitars most is the most metal. The heaviness and loudness does not determine if the song is more metal or not.

This is from the musical point of view. In Progressive Metal the guitars are the most important instruments while the other instruments are secondary. Even the vocals don't play a huge role.

I would say the most metallic is progressive thrash metal.

Aggression and brutality in metal comes from punk/hardcore. Metal without punk is not aggressive and dirty, but the focus is on technicality of the guitar play.

Here's the real question

Is prog metal derived from metal, or prog rock?

(I like to take to the easy road and say both)! A bridge between the two.

I'd have to go with traditional metal, since that is what started metal, besides proto-metal. Close second was death metal, and then there was progEmbarrassed, which sometimes can be very not metal, but most of the time it is very metal!Headbanger

They're all metal... picking a "least" metal was a bit easier, but saying that one metal subgenre is "more metal" than another metal subgenre seems silly IMO. So no vote from me. Smile

^That's true. Granted, there are a lot of borderline cases with industrial, glam, metalcore, proto (duh), alternative, and grind IMO. However, there is no way that you can argue that black, death, doom, power, thrash, and heavy metal aren't metal, so in that sense I agree with you.

EDIT: Ninja'd by The Block Tongue this is directed at J-man.

I'm going with death metal for it's brutality.  Trad metal has a case in it's genre name alone, and many of those bands are what most "mainstreamers" would think of when they hear the term metal (Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, etc.).  Metallica is a significant exception, but their name helps with the association or serves as irony depending on your POV. LOL

I don't understand why people think prog metal is "weak" or "for pussies" it is just as metal as any other metal genre. Of course I won't use DT as an example because certain people have already expressed their hatred for them, but are you calling bands such as Savatage, for "Streets", and Opeth pussies?

They're jealous of the kool kats, that's why CoolTongue

No but seriously, prog metal is "weird," and people don't like weird things. Show someone who likes other music a 25 minute long epic and they'll poo poo it on sight. Trust me, I have experience trying to show people A Change of Seasons (my favorite DT song, if not my FAVORITE song), and they freak out saying how it can't possibly be good if it's that long.
Even for non long tracks, any track with virtuoso instrumental sections or creative fusion techniques will throw people off the edge, because apparently if a track doesn't have 3 minutes of intense riffing and then it's over, it's not really a metal track.  A lot of people also think that because prog metal pulls a lot of influence from jazz, classical, and just plain old prog rock, that it doesn't have the metal edge of death or thrash metal.

Yea, and there are always hipsters and purists Tongue
I'm one for prog rock/metal, so I can almost see where they're coming from (well not really)

Yeah, for some people songs have to be within a certain time limit, i.e. 3-5 minutes, and if it isn't that long they refuse to listen to it. For me though if an album doesn't have a song over 8 or so minutes it is kind of a turn off. Embarrassed

Yes, and I was exaggerating slightly LOL

Prog metal is still not weird; at least here, everything good and weird gets lumped in avant-metal

^True, and I didn't mean to sound so condescending. Embarrassed
And yes, it's not weird here, but go out anywhere and play a prog metal song and people will have a purely confused expression on. I think people just don't like impurities in their metal genres.

One time we were out at a bar that was nearly empty (there was just my large group and one other large group), and a friend of mine put Octavarium on the jukebox (it had some big online database).  Everyone from the other group was glaring at us angrily for the entire duration.

Well you have to admit Opeth is really melodic. Just cause they have death vocals doesn't mean they're brutal.

Anyway, I don't think heaviness is inherently metal. For example, bands like Slipknot and Bring Me the Horizon are heavier than Judas Priest or Maiden, yet the latter two are clearly more metal than either of the former.

Voted for thrash.

When I think of Metal and all that is Good and Holy in metal, I think of Thrash.

It is also the genre that can combine all elements from all genres and still be undeniably METAL, plus it is really the center link to all genres, starting from mellow stuff to the most brutal.

THRASH TILL DEATH.

I must also say that I do not like the term "Traditional Metal". I prefer Heavy Metal.

I hate that term too. I'd just use heavy metal, but people get a bit confused cos it's too vague a term now.

I voted thrash. An argument can be made for all other forms of extreme metal, bar grindcore and doom, spawning from thrash in one way or another.

^^I prefer using classic heavy metal as well. I'd vote for either classic heavy metal or thrash, as those are the two genres that come to my head first when I think of metal. Now if it was 'heaviest', this would probably be a much harder poll as there are many different ways a band can be heavy.

I'm in the just call it heavy metal camp. Other sub-genres tend to drop the "heavy", so that's the differentiator.

I guess Trad as pretty much all the sub-genres took something from this.
