Panzerballett is a German jazz-fusion band that doesn't just cover Weather Report's Birdland. They take Birdland, add two heavily distorted often 7-string guitars and add Meshuggah-esque riffs to a saxophone fronted melody. The band also has originals, too, who feature a fantastic mix of funk, groove, metal, jazz, thrash, and so much else.

That first song sounds freaking cool!! Based off that alone, i'd say progressive is a better fit than thrash.  Avant??  I guess the main question is if they are metal enough (Edit: They are to these ears).

I'll pass it to the prog team. Smile

Also, could you share any more original tracks the band has released.  Was the first song an original?
