Who rocks hardest out of the 'big four'? I know it's a totally cliche and outworn debate but hey this is 'Metal Archives' so somebody's gotta do it!
I am going to risk my nonexistant internet butt and say Megadeth. Tongue

Megadeth for me - the most interesting of the four from a musical point of view. I hope to have the time one of these days to review Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? I actually was heavily into thrash metal back in the Eighties, and loved all four of them, including Anthrax. Spreading the Disease is one of my favourite albums from that era.

Metallica is one of my biggest musical loves of all time, and I really like some Slayer stuff too. I've only recently started to get into Megadeth, perhaps one day it's Anthrax's turn.

Metallica has a big lead over the others in my own mind.  They banged as a metal band and rocked as a rock band.  The only material they've released that I'm not very big on is the Black Album (with the exception of a few songs) and St. Anger.

I used to listen to Megadeth a lot, and their first 4 albums are thrash metal classics.  However, I haven't enjoyed anything they have released starting with Risk.  Their newest material is very much thrash metal, but I don't know what exactly it is, but something is missing.  Mustaine's personality is one thing that somehow affects how I hear their new music for some reason.

Anthrax used to be one of my top 5 favorite bands.  I think I actually got into them before I got into Metallica.  I remember my brother and I share a copy of the Beavis And Butthead album that has their version of "Looking Down The Barrel of A Gun" by the Beastie Boys.  So I bought a used copy of Volume 8, which sounded nothing like the Beastie Boys, but I had never listened to anything as heavy as the opening track "Crush".  I've always been more of a Bush fan than a Joey fan, and prefer the bands material with Bush, especially Sound Of White Noise and We've Come For You All.  With the reunion mess with joey and the hiring/firing/whatever of another vocalist, they are now a band I've lost patience with.

Slayer is Slayer. LOL My favorite albums of theirs are South of Heaven and Seasons in The Abyss.  If only their other albums had as much diversity from a songwriting standpoint.  I actually like it when they slow down once in a while.

I'd have to go with Anthrax. To me Megadeth haven't released anything good since Rust in Peace (I haven't heard their latest though). Slayer's last great album was Reign in Blood and Metallica only ever released two good albums (Kill 'Em All and ...And Justice for All). If you ignore their terrible periods Megadeth are the best, but overall I'd say Anthrax.

I voted Anthrax : I was totally blown away when I first heard "milk (ode to Billy)" on a metal radio broadcast, and 'persistence of time' is one of the best thrash metal albums ever. And "i'm the man" and "bring the noise" are the best rap-metal songs ever.

First 4 Metallica releases are the only ones worth my time.

Slayer are commoner spam and need to learn how to solo.

Megadeth are slow and boring and need to learn not to solo (Hangar 18 is one of the worst songs of all time).

Anthrax are just lol, Charlie and Scott should have focused on S.O.D. instead.

I agree Smile - but unfortunately Testament does not have the popularity of the Big Four (bands).

Metallica is the winner for me too, they were consistantly good in the 80s IMO. Megadeth did only one really good album (Peace Sells...); Anthrax did two (Spreading the Disease and Among the Living) and Slayer did two (my opinion, of course) - Reign in Blood and South of Heaven (although some will disagree).

Well i think that all of them are great bands for different reasons everyone. First the Metallica because they are still the locomotive of metal music. It's the band who brings every day new people to that kind of music. Second the Megadeth because of their musical progress all these years. Third the Slayer because they still remain the most violent (with the good meaning of this word) band on stage. I've see them live a few years ago and the arena was a battlefield. Last but not least the Anthrax because they are one of the most clever bands i've ever hear in my life with a great sense of humour. And when a drummer refers as a main influence Tery Bozzio (like Charlie Benante did) he gets my respect...

Rust In Peace probably impacted me more in my early stages as a metalhead and a musician than any other album, so just for that Megadeth. Metallica would have to be second, then Slayer, then Anthrax, tho tbh I like Testament better than any of the Big 4 these days.

I recently have rekindled my love for Slayer Heart (and boy its been a while) and now I'm a bit torn as for my #2.
Overall...I enjoy Metallica more musically but they have produced 5 great albums for me, (and a few other songs) while Slayer has 5 great albums, 2 more good ones and a killer EP. So more musical enjoyment or more good ouput???

Megadeth is still the undisputed #1
Also I think it's great all except Anthrax have made really really good "comeback albums" Death Magnetic and World Painted Blood are actually near the top for me for each bands respective discog!

I think in terms of consistency thru the length of their collective careers, Hands Down, you have to go with Megadeth. Even their worst albums like Risk and Cryptic Writings are still more passable than St. Anger or Diabolus In Musica.

And while Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood are considered 5 star classics against Megadeths Peace Sells or Rust in Peace , Megadeth really has had stronger albums overall. Not to mention, Dave has arguably had better musicians surrounding him during his tenure. I would dare say Menza and Friedman would make Metallica better than they have ever been with Ulrich and Hammett.

Just my two cents, but felt it deserved saying....

Slayer, eventhough they have crappy albums too (just like all the others),
Anthrax is pretty cool, never been a huge fan.
Megadeth, never liked it really. I hate Dave Mustain's whiney voice. Plus the lyrics are so stupid.
Metallica, they do have great albums. But nowadays, on stage... Eventhough Tom Araya can't headbang anymore, he's still a much better performer than James Hettfield. Plus he's vocally so much better. James hettfield doesn't scream anymore, he does some singing as if he's in a pop rock band.

If anyone likes some thrash metal, I would say they'd also like some Slayer. Not like a fan or something, but it's good quality music. It's like you listen to brutal death metal and you don't like Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse.

When I'm at no-metal festivals, I tend to scream Slayer pretty often when I'm drunk :P

Plus, Metallica is far more famous in general. So I would expect them to win. Allthough, I thought they'd lose on most metal forum for selling out to metal music. But I quess I'm wrong.

I like all four bands. All of them have had unimpressive output and really amazing output, and they are different enough from each other that I can't really compare them. When I was young I listened more to Metallica and Megadeth than Slayer and Anthrax, but nowadays I like the bands equally much.

Really, it ought to be The Big Six with Testament and Exodus included.

This, although I'd probably still have voted Megadeth.  It would change my 2nd and 3rd choices, though.

I think Slayer would be way better if Kerry King wasn't allowed to play "solos"

Posted By: genghiscon

I agree to an extent with Time Sig and Tri-Top that Exodus and Testament should be revered with the Big Four for their contributions to the genre. I think were they stumble there is that they never got the publicity, critical acclaim and sales that the Big Four did, so they don't get lumped in. Having seen all six bands in concert, I think they all have game and put on good shows.

I think there may be the like-ability factor working against Slayer. Not the most cuddly band in the world...lol. Metallica, yeah, they get a lot of votes from their early work. But, you would think that their later work (and the fact that Lars and James' egos have turned them into another Gene and Paul from KISS) would take away a lot of votes, too.
Dave is abrasive and can be off-putting, but I can't help but admire him for cleaning up his act from his younger days, personally. And poor Anthrax. I love the guys. I just think the John Bush thing never quite worked for me (not counting Sound of White Noise...which I thought was brilliant) Too many sub-par albums in a row killed all the momentum they had built during the Belladonna era.

Aren't you guys glad you didn't ask for my opinion? Big smile

Testament and Exodus could make it into a big six indeed. I suppose.
And indeed, Kerry King's solos suck most of the times. Especially the new ones I've heard (only once). Jeff Hanneman always was the better guitarist, but somehow Kerry King is far more famous and admired... Just because he has tattoos on his head or something? Never understand it. Jeff Hanneman is way better, hands down.

Kerry King's fucked up solos are an integrated part of the Slayer sound, as are Hanneman'. I've never been botherred with one of then being better than the other, though.

About Jeff and Kerry:

C'mon guys! Kerry is clearly much better guitarist than Jeff. His riffing is way smoother and more precise, whereas Jeff tries to keep up with the tempo with his odd right hand technique and makes lots of little mistakes all the time. That being said, Jeff is a lot better songwriter than Kerry. Ever heard of Angel of Death, South of Heaven, War Ensembe, Raining Blood, Seasons In The Abyss? So basically, Jeff writes the riffs and Kerry plays them Approve

I think my favourite of these four is Megadeth, although I think they are all really good. Everyone knows Metallica's music is sloppy after Black Album but they still kill live!

Im a Slayer fanboy taken to the extremeEmbarrassed. It hasnt always been like that, but in the last 15 years Ive really loved them to death. Especially Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss. As far as thrash metal goes, nothing beats those albums in my book.

QFT

All the poo-pooing over Jeff and Kerry's noodling isn't really the issue. If Araya's bass playing and technique  were stronger and higher in the mix, it would elevate Slayer to an even higher degree. Of that I have no doubt at all.

I think Araya's bass is pretty cool on Hell Awaits for example.

But have anyone heard Lulu of Metallica? I just heard a part of one song. I think it's classified as rock instead of metal.
Plus; I think it's really really really shameful that the big four tour was actually a Metallica tour with the big three as support acts. They all have been influential so I think they all should switch from gig to gig who should headline.
I didn't want to go, especially because of the costs, but also because I assumed the majority will be Metallica fans rather than BIG FOUR fans. I want to headbang and hangout with people who like Anthrax, Megadeth en Slayer as well. Here is an example for how emberrassing this is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0KNYeKvT1Y&feature=related" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0KNYeKvT1Y&feature=related

There's some mad thrash on Lulu as well, it's pretty metal in places definitely.

And yeah, a co-headlining thing would have been cool to do, but the harsh truth is that Metallica is the most popular metal band in the world, and nobody's going to play after them, except for the Rolling Stones.

And yeah, a co-headlining thing would have been cool to do, but the harsh truth is that Metallica is the most popular metal band in the world, and nobody's going to play after them, except for the Rolling Stones.
They've sold the most albums to non-metal heads. The Big Four was just another money circus I think...

That's a great show! (Though, I don't like Death Angel so much on cd. They pull of a great show, but on cd it's a little bit boring. Thesame goes for Tankard to me. If I have the change to see either one of these again, I would see them)

I was in to all 4 back in the '80s, almost equally.  None of them fared very well in the '90s.  I'd say Anthrax had my favorite of the 4 for that decade, but nowhere near what they did in the previous decade.  In the 2000s, I'd say Megadeth made the best "comeback" of the four, though that last Slayer was pretty good, & the last Megadeth was the weakest of their most recent output.

I'll vote for Anthrax, simply because they're the underdog in this.  LOL

I've become so tired of this overhyped big four

there are so many great thrash albums out there...

Slayer for sure. I'd find it curious if anyone made a "big four" of modern metal. I'd actually like it.
