Hmmmm..... this thread looks oddly familiar.
Perhaps I've seen it on a different website. LOL

Went with Dream Theater then, and I'll do the same here as well.

I go with the more evil one.

Opeth.  Yeah both suffer from Prog pretentions but Akerfeldt is still more metal at heart, I feel, and Opeth is more progressive in a good sense and way less dull. Dream Theater is a rather badly watered down metal band to my ears.  If DT would get down to the metal roots and forget about this Prog nonsense I think it would be better. Opeth has a wicked quality that I don't think DT will ever have (maybe if Petrucci embraced Satan and Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy sacrificed Labrie who can give real metalheads the giggles, in a ritualistic ceremony, and ate his entrails it would give them the power to start making edgy music).  Of course I am not endorsing such an act, but I just feel that DT lacks bite.

I think Images and Words is better then my five Opeth albums (not combined), but Systematic chaos....nope cant listen to the hole thing without getting bored, bought Awake today so I might listen to that for now

I realy like Opeth also have there 5 albums from Blackwater Park til Watershed soon i will go backward (moonwalk) to their more death/black metal albums, looking forward too listen to Stil Life

Both are fantastic.... but it would be a crime for me to go against Dream Theater on this one. Opeth is one of my favorite bands as well.

I honestly hate Dream Theater and I find Opeth to be quite overrated, but I guess I'll go with Opeth as some of their albums alright.

You're hilarious on this site. LOL

Anyway, I go with Opeth as well. Both for a preference to darker metal and just out plain quality/consistency.

Though I used to be a huge Dream Theater fan a few years back, I can't really enjoy their music as much I used to. Ever since they released Octavarium, I just basically... stopped.

Now, Opeth is still one of my favorite bands of all time and I can always go back to them despite how many times I've listened to them. Though Akerfeldt is basically beginning to take control of the whole band (especially with the departures of Lopez and Lindgren), Opeth still continues to make great music imo and they have a special place in my heart .

Dream theater for me. I grew up with their music.. Nothing against Opeth. DT is just 0.00000000000001% better for me. Rawks

Metaledit: Since this is a metal related poll, i'm moving this to the poll section.

DT here. Love both bands though, but DT has a special place in my heart, since they are the reason why I turned back to listen progressive rock, progressive metal and eventually extreme metal.

Opeth don't do anything to me.
Dream Theater popularized the prog-metal genre and released the essential 'images and words'.

Definitely Opeth for me; I have tons of respect for Dream Theater for their abilities, although I find their songwriting much less enjoyable.

Favourite style of metal right now would be avant metal with growls, but I have to thank Opeth for making me enjoy growls.

I went with DT, although I love Opeth, too.

This doesn't really have anything to do with my favorite style of metal, as such. I just think that DT are more important and have had a bigger impact in prog metal than Opeth has. Also, had there been no DT, there would be no Opeth - kerfeldt himself has stated that it is because of DT that Opeth sound the way they do. I love both bands and both bands have made songs that rock my world and songs that don't do anything for me. I just like DT a tad more overall.

This was very hard to choose between, but I had to go with my first metal band, Dream Theater. Since they were both progish in a way, the only seperating factor was that without DT, for me, there would be no Opeth, or metal for that instance.

Oh, this is hard. My two favorite bands of all time..... but I have to go with Dream Theater. One, Dream Theater was the first prog band I ever got into, and from Dream Theater I got into Opeth. They virtually created Prog metal (along with Queensryche and Fates Warning), and they were by far the most successful of the 3. They themselves were a major influence on Opeth, thereby making Dream Theater better, by the width of a hair, in my mind.

Ha! Both of you are wrong! Tongue

Here's my chronological evolution of prog metal's key releases... Dream Theater popularized prog metal, but saying they began it is quite a stretch. Here we go...

1985 - Watchtower's Energetic Disassembly

1986 - Queensryche's Rage For Order

1988 - Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

1988 - Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime

1989 - Fates Warning's Perfect Symmetry

1992 - Dream Theater's Images and Words

Of course, there's more but without these albums, traditional prog metal as we know it wouldn't exist IMO.

^ One could argue that Watchtower's highly technical approach to thrash metal was the beginning of progressive metal. Of course, it's more subtly progressive than, say, Images and Words, but I've always considered it the first prog metal album (and I'm sure I'm not alone in this).

I prefer Dream Theater far over Opeth. Sure, they've been weak lately, and Opeth is more consistent, but Dream Theater's best work far outdoes anything Opeth ever did, IMO. Funny, because I consider myself more of a death metal fan than a straight-up prog metalhead.

Dream Theater easily.  They are actually my favourite metal band, while I don't like growls, so that leaves a lot of material from Opeth out of my liking... and very often when Opeth doesn't use growling, they completly forsake metal.

Oh, I just found out, it seems this is a multiple vote poll... I think I just voted twice for Dream Theater (I thought I hadn't voted yet, since the page didn't tell me I had already voted, but when I voted again it still gives me the option to vote), however, this means the result for this poll isn't really reliable.

That would be Opeth for me. I used to adore Dream Theater, but lost my burning passion for their music around the late nineties. They still release high quality material, but to me the magic is mostly lost.

Dream Theater is one of those bands I generally prefer not to talk about out of fear of hurting someone's feelings.

But, if I had to say something, against all rules of political correctness... I'd say their music used to be something relatively fresh back in the 90s and it was by far the only good thing about it. Today it's not even that. Avoid.

Opeth, on the other hand, used to be a mindblowing band. Now it's just good. I wouldn't compare the two, though. They are somewhat connected, yes, but Opeth is rooted in extreme metal and prog folk rather than symph prog and heavy metal, like DT.

That's the thing. So many people, whose opinion and taste in music I greatly respect, love or used to love DT. Like you, Chris, or Jonas. Because of that, I tried to like them many times, I listened to them and suffered for, as I imagined, my own good... I bought their t-shirts and slept in them, then listened again - nothing. I went to a SPA to cleanse my body of toxins and tried once more. Nothing. I banged my head against the wall repeatedly. It didn't work. I started to watch soap operas to sharpen my emotional side while sprinkling my head with vanilla oil. Still hated them afterwards....

I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT AND I AM IN THE WRONG HERE Angry I feel lonely... maybe if I had friends, the love for DT would come too? But even you, people on the web, don't like me. I don't like me! And I don't like DT!... Suddenly a feeling of pure unity, coming from this overwhelmingly harmonious wave of negativity, overcomes my mind. It changes me. It makes me lucid. I see now. The truth is... I just can't stand LaBries' stupid voice.

Dream Theater for me, although I like Opeth a lot, too. I think maybe it boils down to the fact that the live experiences I have had with Dream Theater were much better than the ones I've had with Opeth. In terms of musicality, the two bands can't be compared though.

Oh it definitely was tongue-in-cheek! Still, as Jonas has said, the stuff that's been happening during the last 2-3 years is really starting to mess with my brain, so there may be some subconscious, id, ego, super ego interferences Tongue. I'm also on a very strict diet now and am hungry all the time LOL
I apologize if you took the "no one likes me" part seriously and personally (which is totally understandable, given the unfortunate way I put it, haha) It's just that one of my best friends turned his back on me when I needed his support, that depresses me a bit. But in general, even if I am a little bit asocial, it's the way I am and I have no problem with that whatsoever.

Anyway, I'm sorry if my psychedelic rant worried you, but I'm also grateful for the kind words you said, they made me feel much better Smile

I'd assumed your posting was tongue-in-cheek, Bartosso. Where do you get the idea that you're not liked? Certainly I only know you from MMA but I always look forward to your posts. You in a bad place, mate?

Oh it definitely was tongue-in-cheek! Still, as Jonas has said, the stuff that's been happening during the last 2-3 years is really starting to mess with my brain, so there may be some subconscious, id, ego, super ego interferences Tongue.

Oh, I know the feeling... except I don't buy into Freudian theory. But, yeah, I've been going through a rough patch too. And it's not over yet :-S

Oh, man, yeah having experienced shit like that when I was younger, I think I know where you're coming from. I have just given up on the best-friend concept altogether.

Yeah, it turns out it's an overrated, idealistic concept. Also, I hope your life will get back to normal very soon.

Although a dislike for LaBrie's voice is a common trait amongst many thousands of metalheads and is probably not curable ;-)

You saw right there that I tried anyway Tongue

I also agree with Opeth. I've always found them more interesting and diverse as opposed to Dream Theater, who seems to produce the same basic sound with every album.

I love DT!

And I think the two completely different bands within the same universe (progressive metal).

Opeth by a long shot.  I find DT extremely boring.
