Me, really an old-school Progger, I’ve only discovered this DM genre the last few tears. The fuck I’ve been missing out on......
My post here is more geared towards Breeding the Spawn. I can hear that producer Paul Bagin had no idea what he was dealing with here when Suffo entered the studio. Yes, it was a step backwards, and possibly thwarted the momentum gained by Effigy, but, coming into this AMAZING Spawn album - this is the very oppressive and murky sound that intimidated me back in the day. I LOVE this 2nd release of theirs. Those muddy, rough edges really seem to suit the music and feel of the album. And Chris Richards’ bass playing is outstanding, something I thought that Josh Barohn’s playing was very under mixed on Effigy. Yin and Yang. I don’t think BtS deserves the flak it cops - (Yes, I say this decades after the fact, I wasn’t there (so to speak, Van Der Graaf, Magma, and Henry Cow, Hawkwind and Floyd, The Airplane, Quicksilver etc... that’s where I was....) but I love this unbelievable music. I wish I’d have embraced it much earlier on my musical journey, but pot and Floyd suck me in way too deep for extreme metal - Maiden and Metallica was as far as I got...
