Hello everyone,
I am mostly a prog listener, although as many in this field, I listened to a great deal of Metal in my teens and early twenties (Thrash, NWBHM, Gothic). The past two years or so I have been listening to a lot of Math Rock and have been drawn back ever closer to heavier sounds. Amongst this realm a particular band got a real grip on me: Damascus. Their sound is not overly complex, but very clever, and totally lacking vocals induces a very particular introspective experience. Their 2013 LP "Heights" is incredibly ballanced, without any week moments and brilliant passages from song to song (granted that the vinyl length greatly helps). To me, whom hadn't been seriously into Metal for almost a decade, Damascus sounds surprisingly avant-garde. I have tried to find similar bands, but in vain. I have found some interesting stuff along the way, such as Valerinne or Syberia, which - even though also rooting back to King Crimson's Red - are not exactly the same thing. What are your fellings about it? How distinctive/innovative is Damascus' sound? Do you know bands in the same vein? Thank you. |
