Despite having won best metal performance, I think we had this discussion before and decided that they really only have 2-3 songs AT MOST on any particular album that you can even call hard rock. Not a fit, sorry.
edit: the previous thread from 2010 isn't very helpful as that was before we added the Hard Rock subgenre, but when we added the hard rock sub there was some kind of discussion in the collab zone. I'll see if I can find it. Edited by Triceratopsoil - 18 Jun 2012 at 6:33pm |

I found some discussion on the last page of "controversial subgenres" thread stickied in this section:
Both Certif1ed and (former collab) Cannon outright rejected them for proto-metal. There actually aren't any posts about them in the hard rock thread; the discussion I was referring to is quoted above. Not a single collaborator has at any point posted in favor of adding them. I hope that helps. Edited by Triceratopsoil - 18 Jun 2012 at 6:35pm |

I think that pretty much sums it up Colin. Its my sensation that most Collabs dont consider Jethro Tull a "hard rock" act even though some of their material could be clasified as such. Theyve never released a fully fledged hard rock album though and thats the deciding factor. Unless someone wants to comment more on this, this thread will be locked. Ill wait about a week to do it though.

I could see Aqualung maybe having a case for proto-metal (mainly for the title track and "Cross-Eyed Mary"), but the rest of their discography doesn't seem fit for hard rock or proto-metal IMO. Even that album is fairly borderline.

Yeah, I love me some Jethro Tull, but I don't think they belong on this site, sorry.

Some of their non Prog albums could qualify as Hard Rock, but overall no.

The problem with that theory is more of the album is gentle acoustic guitar and flute than anything else. |

I think the question is if they are not just "rock" and not "hard rock" and as mentioned above those albums need to be fully fledged hard rock albums to be added to MMA. Hard Rock is a borderline metal sub genre as it is. Were not interested in bringing in borderline hard rock acts to the site. ...If anyone wants to suggest Jethro Tull for hard rock I think they should suggest them in the hard rock team thread with a link to this thread. It is after all that team who decides if they want to add Jethro Tull or not. ...the reason I wanted to lock the thread was because I thought they had already been rejected but now Im suddenly not so sure.

It seems they haven't formally been evaluated for hard rock, just rejected for proto- and I think trad too |

Tull is early prog, come on!
The Goo Goo Dolls had a few heavy songs on their first album, does that mean they belong on MMA? I'm not being facetious, just asking. Every now and then bands will dabble in heavier sounds, but that doesn't mean they are metal. And I say this as someone who is very familiar with metal, but not a metal "snob." I dunno, just my opinion. :) |

I would actually not be opposed to considering perhaps possibly re-evaluating Stand Up for inclusion under proto - the rest of their discography could easily be tagged non-metal.

Well...if the hard rock team wants to evaluate on Jethro Tull, its their call.
