Originality - it's a nice thing to have, but far from mandatory. Some bands take their inspiration from the greats and pay homage in a memorable and skillful manner. Some bands take it a step further and add their own special ingredient, and here we have an example of such a thing. Germany's Thorngoth take the foundation laid down by the greats and then add their own spark to give life to deliver a solid slab of Black Metal with occasional epic qualities. Thorngoth have dropped upon the earth a heavy and evil album that frequently delivers epic riffs and harrowing atmosphere. Fans of German Black Metal should already own a copy of this.

Aquila - Imperium CD (Metalcore)
AQUILA is both furious and melodic; the listener might be able to catch the wide-ranging musical influences buried within the unique metal groove that surfaces from their tracks. Machine gun rhythms, intense guitar work and the catalyst: death metal vocals were all brought to the forefront of the audible threshold to result in a face punching listening experience.

Hellhound - Hellhound 7� (Punk/Hardcore)

Suburban Showdown - Warvictims Split 7� (Punk/Hardcore)
Brutal pair of two up-and-coming discore bands from different parts of the world. Side A�s Suburban Showdown comes in with a well-recorded set of four tight tracks focusing lyrically on the destruction of mankind via government spying, video cameras, and public ignorance. Musically along the lines of Disfear with different structures, standard tuning, and an influence of grind. Warvictims, hailing from Sweden, deliver 3 war cries in a traditional d-beat style recorded in a distorted, primitive tone. Musically of Disclose with deeper vocals.

The Lightbringer - Quintessence of Dawn CD (Black Metal)
The Lightbringer hailing from Quebec Canada skilfully combines the strengths of black and power metal. The various moods and textures are linked together and merge into each other allowing the texts to come alive within the listener's imagination. Guitars, sometimes melodic and incisive, sometimes atmospheric and poignant are supported by haunting arrangements on keyboards and by a dynamic bass line and an energetic battery. The trio of model and enriched voices that characterize the mythical universe "Quintessence of Dawn" is as easy to listen for fans of all genres than a deep experience for music lovers looking for the thrill of contemplating an overall work. Because that's what "The Lightbringer" is: an artistic whole that will please scholars who will want to dissect and discover its hidden treasures.

Bloodshed Walhalla - Legends Of A Viking CD (Viking Metal)
Bloodshed Walhalla could be easily compared with Bathory but there are some differences in the sound as well. Influenced by Bathory albums which were based on Viking history ''Blood Fire Death, Hammerheart and Twilight of the Gods''. However, more based on traditional Heavy Metal music. A mix of some good old Bathory with Heavy Metal and a strong traditional influence you get Bloodshed Walhalla. The guitars are quite catchy with fantastic folk based melodies. Also, here and there, you will hear some acoustic parts as well. ''Legends of a Viking'' has 6 hymns of pure Viking Metal in its best form. There is definitely very noticeable traditional vibe in these tracks. Nonetheless, each song is a tale for itself. Some tracks have really strong refrains and great melodic vibe. The chorus vocals are perfectly done with a hymn like approach. For fans of Bathory and die hard Viking Metal fans as well.

Lunar Aurora - Mond CD (Black Metal)
This isn't fairy-tale music. It's not beautiful. It's powerful, mysteriously hypnotic and regal, yet dark, brooding and with a sense of desolation. It's pure Teutonic glory! The guitar chords, riffs, melodies, are grand; they weave what could be considered cold hard thrashing chords with a sense of grandeur, pride, and purpose. The songs themselves are easily worn on into the 6-8 minute marks, without getting boring, via these blasting bits of excellent drumming while frost-bitten axe-work blows its way in and around, creating structure and bitter-cold atmosphere that passes over like Northern winds.

Mael Mordha - Manannan CD (Doom Metal)
Taking inspiration from their forefathers, five new warriors began another rebellion, rising up within the Irish metal scene to craft a truly unique blend of never before heard doom metal and traditional Irish laments, now known as �Gaelic Doom Metal�. Mael Mordha�s battling spirit lives on in the band and his bloody legacy inspires the ferocious live performances which have won them many followers, allowing them to quickly conquer their homeland and take their fight to continental Europe and beyond.

Huldrefolk - Morbide Elite CD (Black Metal)
Morbide Elite is a solid album for enthusiasts of the genre. An excellent band that should bring them recognition beyond the Belgian borders. Light church organs, chiming funeral bells and industrial soundscapes create an unsettling atmosphere on a convincing note. Belgium once again proves its Black Metal forth!

Fall of Empyrean - A Life Spent Dying CD (Doom Metal)
Fall of Empyrean has been depressing the world with emotionally-wrought doom/death metal since 2000. Throughout the years, the band has gained a strong following throughout not only the Canada and the United States, but also mainland Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic States, Japan, South Korea, South America, Mexico, Australia, and a number of other countries. The band has established itself within the US doom metal scene, steadily rising in the ranks.

Longing For Dawn - Between Elation and Despair CD (Doom Metal)
Funeral Doom has become the opium of metalheads worldwide. Finding its beginnings in Scandinavia with bands like Until Death Overtakes me and Pantheist, funeral doom has seemingly drifted through each genre of metal, swallowing everyone left in the slowly stagnating scenes in a slow, lethargic dirge. Longing for Dawn�s newest offering is a fantastic release by five musicians just attempting to put their mark on a genre that is still somewhat new and young. Longing for Dawn manages to continue to push boundaries and flow endlessly towards the infinite, but with a more colorful strain than the usual white, black, and grey. 

Mandrake - Innocence and Weakness CD (Goth Metal)
The music of Mandrake is voluptuous, sometimes epic, sometimes fragile, supported by "real" strings, low guitars and powered by pounding drums. Above all, the significant voice of Birgit lyrics and music often deal with the forces of nature, especially water, and the desire to reach distant shores and galaxies.

As the number of years I�ve been reviewing has been increasing, the number of countries that I have been receiving metal from has been increasing as well.  Recently I�ve been finding that a lot of quality material in the black metal realm has been coming from places that aren�t typically associated with it, and this is the case with Krv who hail from Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The group has been releasing material on a regular basis since forming in 2003, and their fourth full length album Ograma came out last year via NHR Records.  Based on this effort, it is clear that these guys are able to write black metal that is just as good as bands from the Norwegian and German scenes and they are worth checking out.
Krv has written songs that alternate between fast paced blasting and chilling mid-tempo arrangements, which gives them a nice balance between an all out assault and a more subdued but equally harsh sound.  As with most bands of this type, the guitar and drums create a dense layer of sound but what most listeners will notice about Ograma is that it has been mixed in such a way that you can actually tell what is going on.  Despite the overall noisiness, the melodic guitar leads are able to break through and this makes the songs distinguishable from one another.  The leads are one of Krv�s strongest assets, as the guitar work is stellar and results in a very cold and somber atmosphere that listeners will get swept away in.  Admittedly it did seem as though there was a little too much filler for an album that is only 38 minutes long, as there is an into and outro but this doesn�t hurt the release that much overall.
Lead singer Ban Krvnik has a lower pitched growl/scream that he utilizes for much of Ograma, but occasionally he pushes it into some higher registers to add emphasis to particular passages.  While he has a fairly standard delivery style for much of the album, there are a few moments where Krvnik really takes it over the top and screams with so much energy that he sounds downright psychotic and it almost seems as though he is going to burst out of your speakers and attack you.  This kind of killer vocal performance has been missing from a lot of black metal bands over the years, so it really makes Krv stand out more when it occurs.  Although I�m not entirely sure what the lyrical content of the album is since it is sung in the band�s native language, whatever messages they are spreading with their material is done so with as much intensity as possible.
I would have rather seen another track or two rather than an intro and an outro, but when the quality of the rest of the material is so high it does make up for it.  Krv may be following the traditional black metal template at times, but there is something about the way that they pull it off that makes Ograma stand out.  Perhaps NHR Records will pick up some of the group�s back catalog in the future so that it has more widespread distribution, as it would be interesting to see where these guys were at earlier in their career.

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence CD (Black Metal)
There are classic albums and there are cult albums. �The Nocturnal Silence� is both, one of the best early statements of the Swedish death metal uprising of the early to mid 90s. Though the album has been remastered, it still sounds great in its original form. There is nothing overly polished about it, it simply manages to retain a dark intonation that many death metal albums only wish they could have. So often we forget what the pure evil of this genre used to sound like, jaded from endless overdubbed albums with focus on technical precision to the detriment of atmosphere. The Nocturnal Silence remains a true relic of extreme Swedish metal. Recommended if You Like: ENTOMBED, SLAYER, GRAVE, DISMEMBER, OBITUARY, AMON AMARTH, UNLEASHED

Necrophobic - Darkside CD (Black Metal)
After releasing the stunning debut �The Nocturnal Silence� that took the metal world by storm all eyes were upon Necrophobic. There was an uneasy silence, bridged with a single featuring a new track �Spawned by Evil�, complete with some cool cover songs. David Parland (aka Blackmoon) was busy with Dark Funeral but returned albeit briefly, to contribute to the Necrophobic cause. Parland was not to stay with Necrophobic but musically speaking it was a nicely crafted piece of melodic and aggressive black-death that he contributed a lot too. Packed with trademark Necrophobic aggression it remains a mystery why this band appeared to fall off the radar after their critically acclaimed
debut. In the ROCKHARD TOP 25 of ALL TIME BLACK METAL CLASSICS, ESSENTIAL RECORD!!!

Wolvserpent - Gathering Strengths - Blood Seed 2CD (Black Doom Metal)
Previously known as Pussygutt, the duo of blackened psychedelic dronemetallers from Boise, Idaho changed their name to the much more ominous sounding Wolvserpent in 2010. The name is the really the only thing that changed, as the occult hypno-doom and grim, folk-stained nightmares that populated their previous albums are all intact here. This double disc from Crucial Blast collects both the Gathering Strengths Lp (Olde English Spelling Bee) and Blood Seed Lp (20 Buck Spin), both of which were previously available only on limited edition vinyl. The material has been remastered for this format, and comes in an eight-panel digipack that features both the original album artwork as well as new imagery that further compliments Wolvserpent's avant-garde witch-sludge.

Gnaw Their Tongues - L'arrivee de la Terne Mort Triomphante CD (Doom Metal)
One of the extreme metal/industrial underground's most unique bands, Gnaw Their Tongues arises again with a new album of majestic, orchestral death-terror called L'arriv�e de la Terne Mort Triomphante, a series of five hymns to the death shroud, a celebration of dissolution. This Dutch one-man avant black/doom/industrial band is responsible for two of the most chilling albums of abstract heaviness to have been released in recent years (An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood and All The Grand agnificence Of Perversity, both from Crucial Blast), but with this new full-length, Gnaw Their Tongues peels back additional layers of it's bombastic horror to reveal moments of euphoric beauty more than we've heard on the previous albums.

Gnaw Their Tongues - All The Dread Magnifience Of Perversity CD (Black Metal)
This new album picks up where last year's An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood left off, this time with even more fearsome orchestral chaos and a noxious bass-assault slithering through these nine tracks of sadistic, depraved filth. Hyper-abstract black metal? Orchestral-powered avant doom? Gnaw Their Tongues continues to defy easy categorization and plunges even deeper into a black pit of cinematic horror, sexual perversion, and shapeless heaviosity. We've packaged this album in a deluxe heavyweight Stoughton tip-on gatefold jacket just like the sort that we used for the CD release of Epiphanic, and it includes a six-panel full color booklet - both the gatefold jacket and the booklet feature artwork by Gnaw Their Tongues mastermind Mories, and his artwork just gets more and more insane with each new release.

Infernum - Taur-Nu-Fuin CD (Black Metal)
Re-issue of the long-out-of-print 1995 album. INFERNUM, whose line-up included Rob Darken (of GRAVELAND) and Capricornus (of THOR'S HAMMER and CAPRICORNUS), was one of the most promising and well-respected Polish Black Metal hordes, back in those dark, incendiary 1990s. Along with VELES and GRAVELAND, this album sits at the apex of that period and style. The album is offers truly obscure Black Metal with evil (somewhat overwhelming) keyboards and a profound mysterious atmosphere,
combined with an extremist ideology - a testament to the true believer.

Arghoslent - Arsenal Of Glory CD (Death Metal)
Arsenal of Glory was an early demo released by the band in 1996, recorded April 20th of the same year. The complete demo is included here along with six live recordings from July 18 1998 in Virginia. Originally released in 1999 with a different tracklist, this is the 2007 digipack re-release.

Thrudvangar - Durch Blut und Eis CD
German pagan metal institution THRUDVANGAR return wit h a new opus. With a well-balanced mixture of dignified keyboard pathos, raging aggression and mystic acoustic parts the Saxonian boys present us their catchy tunes of battles and myths, which should not disappoint any disciple of the newer pagan wave. In this very overcrowded genre it is really not easy to stand out but these warriors from Thor�s empire nevertheless manage to do so. Not by bubbling inventiveness or groundbreaking originality, but by perfectly employing all the ingredients, which make a pagan meal spicy. Alkonost - On the Wings of the Call CD
Alkonost, a band that comes from Russia playing Pagan Metal. The reality is that the band is much more interesting than that, and this is rather obvious from the first couple of minutes. Mixing brutal male with operatic female vocals is the first intriguing thing that one might notice. This mixture works well throughout the whole album, and fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the music. The band sings in Russian and English, another thing that gives a rather unique taste to the listener, and adds points to the whole result.
