I've been listening to the space rock band Ozric Tentacles lately, and I'm not sure about their other albums, but their album 'Jurassic Shift' has quite a bit of metal elements to my ears. They're probably a bit too eclectic, seeing as they incorporate many elements of music, but thought it was worth bringing up.

Here's a playlist for the album: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL28663AC9BE902B37

I dunno Unitron. I have listened to a fair chunk of the Ozrics and although they have some heaviness i think it's more in a Mars Volta type of way, not a metal one. I personally think we shouldn't go overboard on the metal related category. I was surprised that Arena ended up on here and although i like their music it just doesn't seem like metal related to me because hard rock that led to metal was based on a bluesy type of feel that other harder edged bands that fit into the prog world don't. Nice suggestion but i'm not sure the Ozrics would be a good fit here. Maybe there are heavier albums i've yet to hear

Love the band, I've heard most of their albums but I just don't hear any metal whatsoever.  I also am not aware of them meeting any of the other metal-related qualifiers.

At their heaviest they are basically retro psychedelic rock, at their lightest they are jazz, electronic, or even ambient music.

edit: tracks like this or this are the heaviest they ever get, and that will be maybe 1-2 songs per album, and even I wouldn't call that metal

Of course, it's up to the M-R team Smile

This was probably the most metal-sounding song I heard from them:

Yeah, at their heaviest they are probably more akin to heavy psych then metal. Thought it would be worth mentioning though, I felt that a few of the songs from Jurassic Shift had some metallic elements. Tongue

If most or all of their tracks sounded like their heavier side, I'd say they could be a fit for hard rock, but unfortunately that's not the case.  Very diverse band.

^Yup, they are very diverse. I love how they can flow nicely from intense guitar at the end of 'Feng Shui' to the calming acoustics and ambient/trance of 'Half-light of Thillai'.

I just listened to JURASSIC SHIFT recently and found this particular track to sound a lot like the stuff on Steve Hillage's "Fish Rising" album which is considered Canterbury Scene space rock. Good stuff but still firmly in space rock. I actually like the Ozrics though! Heard a few tracks off the new one and it sounds promising if not anything new under the sun :)

A band I know, including Jurassic Shift. Would be a firm no from me unfortunately. There are space rock bands not on MMA who probably should be under HR as heavy prog, but this artist isn't one of them. A hand-ful of hard rock / metal references across a sizeable discography isn't enough. We're looking for significantly metallic albums here.

I completely understand, I wasn't expecting anything but I thought they would be worth mentioning. Should this topic be closed then, or are there other opinions? Tongue

Khaliq, it's always worth mentioning.

The artist is with the admins in the AZ for consideration. For my part, I dusted off the album and listened to Jurassic Shift and Become The Other again. JS certainly has some nice heavy prog bits at times, but it's not a consistently heavy space rock album. It's also in its heavy moments more hard-rockish than metallic. Unfortunately my no vote still stands. Mind you, I'd forgotten how decent Jurassic Shift was so thanks for pushing it under my nose again!
