Risen 3 is the correct answer. I love the gnomes reaction when you aim at them. Shouldn't do that really, gnomes are probably the best characters in Risen 2 and 3, but I remember them as the little shits from Risen 1 throwing rocks at the hero (and Risen 1 is one of those games that everything is tougher than a low level player) and killing him numerous times.

I'm pretty sure it's Risen 3. (I did look up screenshots of it, but only for confirmation: That was the first game that popped into my mind, because I knew Adam had played it recently, and that screen looks like that kind of game.)

Yeah, it's Dark Souls. Specifically, it's from the first game's DLC. That series does have a very distinct look to it, so if you see it even once, you'll probably recognize it anywhere.
