Hello everyone,

I am mostly a prog listener, although as many in this field, I listened to a great deal of Metal in my teens and early twenties (Thrash, NWBHM, Gothic). The past two years or so I have been listening to a lot of Math Rock and have been drawn back ever closer to heavier sounds.

Amongst this realm a particular band got a real grip on me: Damascus. Their sound is not overly complex, but very clever, and totally lacking vocals induces a very particular introspective experience. Their 2013 LP "Heights" is incredibly ballanced, without any week moments and brilliant passages from song to song (granted that the vinyl length greatly helps). To me, whom hadn't been seriously into Metal for almost a decade, Damascus sounds surprisingly avant-garde.

I have tried to find similar bands, but in vain. I have found some interesting stuff along the way, such as Valerinne or Syberia, which - even though also rooting back to King Crimson's Red - are not exactly the same thing.

What are your fellings about it? How distinctive/innovative is Damascus' sound? Do you know bands in the same vein?

Thank you.

It´s a great post, but unfortunately I´ve never heard of Damascus, so I can´t really recommend anything.

If you haven't already tried, use Last.fm and their similar artist station.

It might help.

The Damascus band I am referring to is this one (the discography is incomplete):

As with most modern bands, Damascus is not available at services like Spotify. Last.fm Play does not function on my system.

Cheers.

I know for Spotify you have to be accepted by them (plus pay fees, etc.)

There's a guitarist I know, Mark Wein….has a professional cd (blues) that came out earlier this year, and spotify turned him down for their services. Doesn't make sense to me, but there it is.

Need to revisit Damascus - it's been some time since I've listened to them. Very good band from what I recall.

Thanks for the nudge on the discography - it's a nightmare trying to keep every band up  to date! I've added the couple of missing releases.
