The Mantle, Agalloch - should be mandatory listening. Folk Metal fused with Post-Rock, Black Metal and Neofolk.

Insanely good.

The mighty Moonsorrow! Highly epic band, occasionally covers traditional Finnish folk songs.

Big smile

2 of the Godfathers of "Folk Metal" are Skyclad and Amorphis, though careful, Amorphis (Finland)
started as a "Grindcore/Death Metal Band".
Heres a Classic Album "Elegy" Based on Folk Storys from Finland:

Skyclad (from England) was started by Vocalist Martin Walkyier, Screamer/Grunter of
Tech/Pagan- Thrashers "Sabbat (u.k.)".
Martin is a master of the "Old" English language and writes like a Shakespearean/Dickens Bard!
Clever wordplay and double entendres galore!
Lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh1slYOxII0&feature=related

Their History on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyclad_(band)

Also, a VERY unusual Band from Czechoslovakia called "Cales" :

If you do a search for "Folk Metal" on YOUtube, you'll find TONS! Smile

If you can stomach extreme black metal, I recommend you Negura Bunget's OM Big smile

Plenty of folk elements. Big smile

Also, this prog-folk band is quite heavy at times, and quite similar to viking metal:

Moonsorrow is a definite must, one of my favourite bands.

NOTE: That's a tribute video, not an official video clip.

Turisas have done an amazing job with the album The Varangian Way. Though more of an epic-type album, folk elements abound:

For the most exteme celtic-influenced metal that I can think of, try Heol Telwen.

Or, if you're more into the softer side of things, check out Eluveitie. I'm personally not fond of their works, but I know plenty people who are, so I guess they're good.

Fintroll should be no news by now. :)

...and I'll end with a band that's very dear to me, Korpiklaani.

I used to be very into folk-inspired metal for a couple of years, and I still enjoy it very much, so there's plenty more recommendations where these came from, if you want'em. :)

Tuatha De Danann, celtic folk metal from...Brazil !

Check out also :
Elvenking, Mago de Oz, Primordial, Borknagar, Orphaned Land, Vintersorg, Empyrium (their masterpiece is 'songs of moor and misty fields'), Leave's Eyes

and lesser known acts like :
Skitliv, Stille Volk, Temnozor, Zywiolak, User Ne, Harvey Milk (folk + sludge/noise rock), In Extremo, Ingrimm, Isengard, Forlorn, Aes Dana, Bran Barr (the last two are in the same vein as Heol Telwenn).

And you might be interested in this Deep Purple meets Jethro Tull band from Spain : Nu (in fact, most of the current folk-metal bands sound very uninspired)

Fans of Eastern Europe folk / black metal (Nokturnal Mortum, Temnozor etc...), do not miss the debut EP of Viter, just published the review here. One full song: http://viter.org.ua/krov_tikae.mp3 Really beautiful stuff.

Got to jump in here to recommend you Arkona (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/arkona(russia).aspx). Been listening to them a lot lately and they're definitely one of my favourite folk metal bands.

Also try Wuthering Heights (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/wuthering-heights.aspx?ac=Wuthering%20Heights), they're listed here as power metal, but they have a lot of folk metal in them (prog too).

Elvenking (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/elvenking.aspx?ac=elvenking), another power/folk metal band. Check out the album Heathenreel first.

Cruachan (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/cruachan.aspx?ac=cruachan) Irish folk metal. Another of my favourites. Their 3rd album Folk-Lore is an absolute gem of the genre.

Moonsorrow has already been mentioned and they're pretty much one of the most popular bands in the genre, but V:Havitetty is seriously one of the best albums to come out in the last decade and I highly recommend it.
Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. You can keep my reviews if you want.

I am not a metal genius but you can't go wrong with Agalloch, especially The Mantle.
