I've just checked out Absu this week, Khaliq. Long overdue I'm sure you'll agree.

I didn't get too good a first impression off of the Tara album but I really enjoyed The Sun of Tiphareth.

Also finally checked Melechesh our this week and I'm liking these guys a lot. Listened to Djinn and Sphynx so far.

Anyone else here love Absu? I've really been enjoying their thrash-y black metal sound lately, this song in particular:

The folk guitar at the beginning is especially really nice.
If I say fuck two more times that's forty-six fucks in this fucked up rhyme

Given your tastes Teodoro, have you heard Aquilus? If not it's a symphonic/atmospheric black metal act with strong classical elements and a bit of dark folk as well.

I've been really addicted to the album lately.

Great album Adam! Haunting stuff.

I need to check out that Aquilus album too. Adam's continual posting of it has made me curious.

I hadn't. It's quite epic now that I heard it. I like it and will listen more. I personally prefer more raw pure black metal more than symphonic counterparts but I can always appreciate good music and this is good.

I'm back for good. And more metalized than ever. The older I get, the more I recognize my real passions in music: classical music, and extreme metal, mostly black and death (yes kind of extreme tastes but what can I do LOL )

Anything I can do, I'm ready.

^ It's grown on me more in the last couple of years too, or more accurately I've discovered there's a lot more to it than the lo-fi 2nd wave where it seemed to really  take off and discovered some fantastic band's.

Black Metal and I have become one about one year ago. I always liked it but now it has obliterated all forms of metal.

New Fen out in November:

Their last album ended up being my favourite from them, though most seem to prefer Epoch, so I'm pretty hyped for this one.

That's one of my favorite albums of all time. Keep listening, it's a grower.

My favorite black metal album of 2014 so far is Woods of Desolation's "As The Stars". Beautiful blackgaze record with a depressing yet hopeful atmosphere. Unless you count the new Behemoth, but I think that's closer to death metal?
I haven't listened to Woods of Desolation in it's entirety but I listened to a few songs, and really liked what I heard. I tend to gravitate towards blackgaze.

Well, I've said I'd probably totally overlook something I'd love from 2013.  And here it is:

Delicious atmospheric black metal.

I hate to say it but i think a lot of black metal is just another niche in the market. I think a whole genre has developed from a shock value that was developed way back when (you know Sabbath, Alice Cooper) They've just upped the shock value. Not a bad thing and i'm not saying that some bands don't actually believe in what they represent in their lyrics but i think some bands simply create imagery that will sell. Since i don't take lyrics too seriously i really don't care as long as i like the music.
I think the "niche in the market" is a good observation. Not only that, but some people simply like the aesthetic and make music to fit that aesthetic (not always because it will sell). I personally don't like the image of those bands, but I can imagine appreciating it like an addictive substance, the same way I appreciate zeuhl.

Yeah there's more to it than just selling. It would make a good dissertation for a PHD in college or something! Definately for evoking the darkest and most fearful of emotions like a good horror film. Black metal is the musical equivalent for me
