I watched The Machinist a few days ago. I'd definitely recommend it to those who haven't seen it. It's weird seeing Christian Bale so thin though.

I only saw it for the first time around 2 years ago, but it's definitely become one of my favorites as well. |

Saw Rear Window yesterday:
I liked it a lot... not as much as Psycho but it was a very good movie nonetheless. |

I watched the first Rocky again a few days ago. Spoiler alert: there's a fight at the end of the movie.

Any fans of martial arts movies out there?
I picked up a copy of the classic "The One-Armed Swordsman" today. I've seen several Jimmy Wang Yu films, but not this one. |

In all honesty, I've never seen any martial arts movies (unless The Karate Kid counts ). Are there any that would make for a good starting point?

I guess some good starters for martial arts movies would be Bruce Lee films. The titling of the first few films differs in North America (titles in brackets)than from the rest of the world. Any one of The Big Boss (Fists of Fury), Fist of Fury (Chinese Connection), Way of the Dragon (Return of the Dragon), or Enter the Dragon are good watches. Avoid any other titles because there were lots of Bruce Lee clones that sprouted up after his death. Jackie Chan has plenty of classic kung fu movies from the 1970s. He was even a stuntman in a few Bruce Lee movies. From his 70s stuff, Shaolin Wooden Men, Snake In Eagle's Shadow, Drunken Master, and Fearless Hyena are among my favorites. He had some cool action movies in the 80s that were more stunt based. I'd recommend Police Story and Project A. The great thing with many Jackie Chan movies is his blend of skill and technique with humor. I own several Asian martial arts titles that are probably only for die-hard fans/collectors like me, but Eastern Condors jumps out as a cool, war-based Asian action movie starring Sammo Hung. Jimmy Wang Yu was a big star in the 70s too, and he has some nice movies. If you're into over-the-top movies a bit on the gross side (understatement), check out Ricky Oh: The Story of Ricky. Very corny, but its a fun watch: |

I picked up a ton of movies today (mostly on sale/clearance), and it will take me a while to make it through them. Most of them are action films because that's what I'm feeling lately (I re-watched Heat last night). Here's my movie entertainment for the next little while:
- Escape From New York 2-disc edition (for FREE!!!!) - Lethal Weapon (the only one I bought that I've seen) - Aliens - Charles Bronson Collection (Cold Sweat, Someone Behind the Door, Lola, and 10 episodes of Man With A Camera) - Breakheart Pass (more Bronson!!) |
