 Final part of the Yakuza Papers saga, although there's three more films that are stand alone from the main series with the same actors playing different roles. Really solid series overall.

 Hell of a thing for 1902. Wasn't expecting it to have spoken dialogue either (it's still silent of course, technically, the dialogue is part of the audio track. Apparently they'd use a narrator on stage back in the day and the restoration recording reflects this). Obviously extremely inaccurate today, even more so than Fritz Lang's later Woman in the Moon almost 20 years later and it seems more like fantasy than science fiction per se, with the characters even introduced as being wizards, but this is sci-fi movie history right here. Worth a watch for that reason alone.

 A meeting of the Italian giallo and the German Krimi genres. It's a basic but decent enough plot, but this has to have the worst special effects I've ever seen: model vehicles that are completely obvious and really ugly green screen scenes with thick black lines around the edges to highlight exact why images have been layered to create a scene.

The version I saw didn't have any spoken dialogue at all. It had been hand coloured though, which gave it a weird look. Funnily enough, respectable stage actors refused to appear on film at the time as film wasn't seen as a serious medium, so there's all manner of dancers and less scrupulous performers in this movie.

On Arrow Player there are black and white and the hand coloured prints of the film. I watched the black and white version, but I might give the colour a look as well another time.

 Little known Japanese take on H. G. Wells' character. It's got much more of a crime narrative, involving the theft of a valuable necklace, than the 1933 film. The special effects are similar but not as good despite this being from 1949. It's pretty solid overall. This is the first time the film has been released outside of Japan, by Arrow Video, along with 1957's The Invisible Man vs The Human Fly, which I also have lined up to watch.

I'd never even thought to look for it on there before. I can see there's several uploads.
Arrow Video in the UK released a book and blu-ray set last year (and a standard blu-ray reissue more recently). This is the very that includes the dialogue track, as the film would have been exhibited for US audiences of the time. |

 This has got to be among the dumbest horror movies ever made. It's a comedy slasher and it does have a few amusing one liners from the villain, but it also has some of the most stupid death scenes in horror history. Like at one point a girl walks into a room, sees the killer with an electric bonesaw held up menacingly, yet literally walks towards him, sits down in a chair, then sits there screaming as he gives her a facelift with it (the poster above, in fact). Fucking mental. Point it lost me actually as it had some decent moments before that, although it ticks every 'wrong' box for a horror B movie of the 80s, including killing the token black guy first. Another rare misfire selection from Arrow Video, who usually find the hidden gems.

 Another musical. Has some brilliant songs (No Business Like Show Business, Anything You Can Do, Doin' What Comes Natur'lly) and some awful songs (I'm an Indian Too, The Girl That I Marry). Betty Hutton is brilliant, even of the script is fucking terrible in places. Howard Keel, not so much. Judy Garland had originally been picked to play Annie, but proved difficult and fell out with producers. Hutton claimed she was treated badly by other cast members due to replacing Garland and a bit of studio politics (she was on loan), and thought Keel was out of his depth as he was just a beginner (despite being 10 years older than Hutton, it was only his second movie, while she was a musical veteran). I've seen this on stage, and while the sharpshooting scenes are great fun, the story itself is feeble and sexist (a woman is nothing without a man, so she can't be better than him so she doesn't bruise his ego...), and the depiction of Native Americans is really uncomfortable to watch now. Still, Annie is a great character, and Hutton's performance was as good as she was allowed to be.

 Black Rain (1989), for those who don't read Japanese.
Quite the emotionally wrecking film dealing with the aftermath of the Atomic bombings on Hiroshima. It's brilliant but unfortunately it has a complete non-ending that leaves you wondering about the fates of the characters who are still alive at the end. |

 Brilliant. Twists and turns, and an excellent cast.  This seems to be a bit of a divisive movie. And it seems to be a bit divided. The start is pretty slow, but it sets up for a great mindfuck of an ending.  Not clever, but funny as fuck and a bit sexy. Seen it before, but worth a second watch.
