^Origin are actually one of the standout acts on the brutal tech death metal scene to my ears, but it´s not necessarily because of their vocalists

This is the kind of death metal album that I find utterly pointless. It's listenable enough (not counting the pigs doing vocals) and technically well played, but I seem to get so many albums in my promo pool that sound exactly like this that it's just completely boring. I rarely end up reviewing these because I'm frankly embarrassed to A) really go to town on exactly why I rate it so low (which I feel I could right about now) and B) that when done once I'm effectively writing the same review over and over again. That's how interchangeable this kind of music sounds to me. |
My review for this actually ended up being quite long. Think it reads okay, but I better force myself to listen to this at least once more before I post it. Just in case...

Going through this one again. My opinion on it and releases like it isn't changing, though in itself this isn't actually a bad release. I've had promos of similar stuff I've switched off after a few tracks, so it could be much worse.

It's been a while since a promo from Limb Music landed in my inbox, this being the first since May, which for some reason I forgot about and still haven't played and only the second release this year I think. Never heard of these guys before but I got interested when I saw that Herbie Langhans is singing on this...only to then realise it's a shared vocal role with someone else, and that's largely ruining the vocals on this for me as I don't like the other singer too much. Quite disappointing overall actually, as for the most part the material itself isn't exactly making me sit up and pay attention to it. |
I was actually really looking forward to this, because I like their debut, like both singers a lot, and the samples, plus first song released were very promising, but on first listen it seems like quite the mess. Olaf Hayer is much worse than usual on this, imo, and the songwriting is very hit or miss. At least so far, it might be my biggest disappointment of the year, but maybe it'll grow on me.

Still torn on this: I love all the songs where Herbie sings more, but for some reason Olaf is really off this album, so the two softer songs with just him singing are pure torture. This easily has potential to be an excellent album, but I think they blew it by keeping Olaf in there, as much as it hurts me to say that, because I usually like him a lot.

I've not heard Olaf before so didn't know what to expect of him and find this album to be the kind that would put me off looking into his other work. To be honest I didn't actually notice at first that they had two singers as I looked at their line-up and saw Herbie there and that made me put it on at once. I was actually quite surprised to then hear two voices. Not a singer myself but if I were one I'm not sure how I'd feel about my band bringing in a second vocalist like this. It's one thing to do what Wolfchant did when both vocalists have different styles but here both guys are singing cleanly. And the new guy is completely upstaging the old one. And the old one is holding the new one back, which ultimately didn't make for a too enjoyable album on first impression. I drafted it at a 3, which I could honestly see going down based on my current rating system.
I expect I will give it another go soon and maybe do a review sometime in the next week. I'll probably have my usual few days of review burn out before then though. Trying to write one for something else today didn't produce much worthwhile, though I may have another look at it before I go to sleep tonight. That's how I seem to review these days: do about five albums in quick succession and then crash.
