was Octavarium. After that, for me at least, they've been going downhill. Like you say, there are some good moments but I don't know how to put it into words better - the magic is gone. For a band that was unique once (the Moore era, Scenes form a Memory, Train of Thought were groundbreaking albums), these days they're becoming less and less interesting. Cry

Or in other Words: For a progressive metal band, they really aren´t that progressive/innovative anymore. At least not when it comes to developing their own sound.

I find that to be the case with a lot of so-called 'progressive metal' bands. There really doesn't seem to be much innovation and progression anymore. Dream Theater has recycled so many of their own riffs that I can't even count. For me, they're a real hit-or-miss band. When they hit with albums like "Images", "Awake", and "Train of Thought", they really hit, but when they miss they are really bland.

Okay, after several distractions I'm finally near the end of the album now, and it's awesome as expected. It's too early to say yet, but it seems better than Shadows and maybe on par with When Worlds Collide. It certainly has a couple of their most interesting songs yet.

Wow, the last track may be my favorite thing they've ever done! Totally unexpected. Yeah, this probably is on the same level as their debut.

Someone recommended this me on RYM, so I'm checking it out. Seems weird but pretty good so far.
