Played today:

Second impressions on this weren't actually as good. The biggest problem is that they had a more varied sound a couple of albums ago, from what I recall of them. Whereas this seems typical symphonic with an occasional burst of power.

Didn't rate this with a 5 when I reviewed it but I've come very close to upgrading it a few times now. Brilliant album that deserves more attention around here.

I'm a bit disappointed on first listen, tbh. I'm hoping it's a grower, because so far there seems to be way too many slower, softer songs that aren't doing anything for me. I always considered their last two albums as being too similar to Epica to really standout, but if the latter are going more metal with each album, this band seems to be going the opposite direction and not in a good way.

Listened to this earlier. I thought it was pretty solid, quite heavy in places too. I'd be more into it if Epica wasn't so fresh still, I expect.

Listening to this as well. It seems more progressive than normal for them, with a ton of extended instrumental sections and some surprising elements so far. I'm quite interested to see how this stacks up over time, but it certainly seems refreshing after their last one was stale and boring.

Completely agree, it's quite an adventurous release. The brass section in Sunny Disposition works surprisingly well and Creating God is a masterpiece and easily my favorite on the album. I'm not sure if it beats Nightmare as my favorite yet, but it may after more listens.
