I agree about the Amorphis album, not sure why it's considered a classic. They have done much better stuff later.

I'm in agreement with both of you. It's a decent album but not the masterpiece i expected. I guess it's one of those great dividers.

It´s considered a Classic because it´s one of the first death metal albums to feature a Scandinavian folk melody feel. And probably also one of the first to feature keyboards this prominantly in their sound (I know Nocturnus did it earlier, but here the keyboards are used as a lead instrument instead of an atmosphere enhancer). So while it may not sound that special today, it was a pretty original death metal album upon release, and it´s influenced a lot of other artists who came after.

I can understand the disappointment if you expected this to sound anything like Arch Enemy or In Flames, but this is melodic death metal...not melodeath.

I used to worship this release back when it was the band´s latest release, so I´ve listened to this album multible times. It´s been years and years though, so at one point I´ll pick it up for a review.

It's considered a classic basically because it was one of the first death metal releases to stick those other influences in there. My favourite in Elegy (because it was the only Amorphis album I had for years!) which takes the folk influences and clean vocals to yet another level.

I liked the folk influence in it and I can see why it's considered a classic in a historical context, just not something that held my attention and certainly not an album for someone who generally doesn't like the synth like me.
