The last DT album that made me think "wow, this is great" Tongue was Octavarium. After that, for me at least, they've been going downhill. Like you say, there are some good moments but I don't know how to put it into words better - the magic is gone. For a band that was unique once (the Moore era, Scenes form a Memory, Train of Thought were groundbreaking albums), these days they're becoming less and less interesting. Cry
Or in other Words: For a progressive metal band, they really aren´t that progressive/innovative anymore. At least not when it comes to developing their own sound.

^Happy Birthday Jonas Party

I find that to be the case with a lot of so-called 'progressive metal' bands. There really doesn't seem to be much innovation and progression anymore. Dream Theater has recycled so many of their own riffs that I can't even count. For me, they're a real hit-or-miss band. When they hit with albums like "Images", "Awake", and "Train of Thought", they really hit, but when they miss they are really bland.

^I really like Black Clouds and Silver Linings too, I especially love the cover of 'To Tame a Land' that's on the bonus disc.

Now:

Damn is this song great, a nice surprise as I didn't really like Gift of Music. Heavy, melodic, symphonic, and memorable, just what I love from Dream Theater. It also feels a lot less flat-sounding than their previous two albums.

Octavarium was their current when I discovered them too although not the first album of theirs I got. That would have been Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which I got off the strength of The Glass Prison which is still one of my favourite DT songs. The rest of the album didn't hold up to that standard the last time I played it in full (also a while ago and to be revisited soon) though.

Probably the DT albums I need to revisit the most are Awake, which I've never understood the hype for, and Falling into Infinity, which I do believe I've only ever played once due to be so underwhelmed by it that first time. I've always generally been a bigger fan of later DT overall and have never understood the lower ratings that Black Clouds & Silver Linings seems to attract.

My first Dream Theater was Awake, and I actually didn't like it much at first, but obviously it went on to become one of my favorites. Octavarium was their new album at the time I got into them as well, and it and Train of Thought helped me get into the band, before I heard Scenes and it just totally blew me away, and that formed the start of my ongoing fandom. I always say I have legions of favorite bands, but DT probably is my absolute favorite at this point.

^Octavarium was actually also my first Dream Theater album. It's got some of my favorite songs like 'The Root of All Evil', 'Panic Attack', and 'Sacrificed Sons', but unfortunately I feel it has some filler and personally the title track has always bored me. However, it's been awhile so maybe my opinion has changed since.

Now:

This is rare, but I think this 2014 album from a classic 70's progressive rock band is the bands best album.

Octavarium was one of the first Dream Theater albums I got into, and this was when it was still their "new" album... I was only 10 or 11, so it helped shape a lot of my tastes. I also watched the live DVD from this tour (Score) countless times with my dad around that time, so nostalgia might factor into my enjoyment a bit. Still think it's a fucking great album, though Big smile

I find that one a little bit inconsistent: I love The Root of All Evil, The Answer Lies Within, the second half of Sacrificed Sons and the title track is absolutely incredible, but the rest of the album is a little bit lacking in comparison.
