Hi All,

I had noticed certain Bands that folks put up, were wondering what catagory to
put them (some are listed below) . . .

I put together a List of Bands that have more "Complex" Compositions but
are Metal and "Progressive" in nature.  Back in the mid 90's, I heard the term
"Math Metal" for the 1st time, and I think it explains alot.
It also takes care of anything that is Instrumental, Complex, with Melodic
"Clean Vocals", Death "Cookie Monster" Vocals and the Rough Thrash Vocals.
But its all about complexity, crazy time-signatures, odd-meter, progressive
and fusion elements but within a Metal context.

Most of these Bands would probably end up in Prog Metal but may have a
"Sub-catagory" in their descriptions.
Recent Note: Please NOTE I say "would probably end up in Prog Metal", this
would probably be the easiest place to put the Tech Stuff without creating new
sub-catagories in the infantcy of this Forum.
But what do I know . . .

I'll add as well Tech-Thrash, Tech-Death Metal, Tech-Prog Metal where it draws
a fine line, and Math Core. There is a posibility that they could be in various
catagories.  Its just an idea, and to figure out where unusual Bands of this ilk
might go.
If you look at the list, list some of Bands you know of that may fit with others
here.   But saying all that, Prog Metal would suffice.  The Tech-Thrash stuff will
probably just go in Thrash anyways.

I am sure everyone appreciates the thought and effort gone into this list. However, the site hasn't been around for a month yet, and I don't think that at this point it's a good idea to multiply the genres in a way that some people might find confusing or frustrating. As the site gets established, and the membership grows, we can think about some 'subdivisions' in the extant subgenres like the ones you have suggested. At the moment, though, I'm afraid something like this might scare off prospective members - and let's not forget the lesson we should have learned from PA. Classification definitely has a very important role to play, but let's not have it become more important than the music itself.

I must say I prefer fewer inclusive subs rather than too many subs that people might not know or find confusing. Some bands are very difficult to put in a box, but in time Im sure all artists will find their right place and then maybe as Raff points out maybe then we should begin thinking about more subs.

We can starts making sub-subgenre changes once we've reached a point where we can be 100% satisfied with the current situation of bands and genres in MMA. We're getting there. These kind of changes can occur (if it's agreed upon) when the first, essential part of the MMA-building work has been accomplished.

Thats okay,

Its just that many are calling it "Avant Garde" and if someone wants to check out these "genres",
one may think "Meshuggah" will be like "Mr. Bungle" or visa-versa for example.
Anyway, it was jus a thought.
