I've been enjoying what I've heard on Progulus.com so far Big smile.

But its a MUCH more mellower album so be fore-warned . . .

Just started listening to prog metal..... And it is awesome.
Dream Theater
Mastodon
Haken

They are awesome.
I I don't really like growls or whatever they are though, otherwise I would really like Opeth.

In Haken's case, the growls are the least of the bad things they do to their music. LOL

The best Opeth album doesn't have growls.

...And if you're just checking out progressive metal, give Threshold a listen.

I'll go out on a limb . . .

Cant tell you HOW MANY folks on Progulus, had NEVER liked the "Cookie" vocals till they
heard Opeth on the station, on a regular basis when other listeners requested them or
they were in the queue.
I think it may take many listens to see if you can get into their music soo much that those
vocals will blend in with his more melodic voice.

For me it was easy because I am a Thrash and Death Metal fan, but Opeth's music is rich
with creativity that even "Proggers" appreciate it, as many love them as well, no matter what
era (But hey, many have particular albums they like)..
Just my 2 cents, not pressuring you to like anything you cant picture yourself liking in the
near future Wink.

You may want to see the MMA Best of 2011 List too for more Prog Metal recommends as
well Smile (I made a Playlist for it and my own "Best Prog Albums of 2011" playlist that you
can sample too).

Big smile

I like growls if they're done right... and, by golly, Mr Åkerfeldt is very good at growling.

I beg to differBig smile. The two albums theyīve released without the growls are by far my least favorite releases by them.

I used to be kinda "mehhhh" towards Damnation, but I've grown to love that recently. I need to write a new review reflecting my current feelings for it. Smile

As for Heritage, I think it's an excellent album, but probably my second least favorite of theirs (the first being Orchid). Then again, I still rated it with 4 stars so that says how highly I think of the rest of their discography! LOL

Iīve had Heritage for quite a while now, and it completely fails to captivate me like every other Opeth album has done, at least to some extent. After a couple of tracks the album always comes off again. Iīve yet to finish the album in one spin. So far Iīm bored to tearsErmm. Itīll probably be a couple of years before I can write a decent review of the album. Right now my disappointment is so big itīll end up in an undeserved bashing. I still have hope itīll open up to me. You know kinda like waking up from a nightmareLOL.

Regarding Damnation itīs the complete opposite for me Jeff. I used to really like the album, but nowadays I have trouble finishing the album without taking it off midway through it.

Heritage took quite a few spins before it really opened up to me... I was pretty disappointed at first. The songwriting just didn't feel as ominous or coherent as their earlier works, and (to some extent) I still feel that way. It's a grower, that's for sure.

I also know plenty of people who've heard it many more times than I have and still hate it, so liking it isn't guaranteed! LOL

Just how much of this album that will be metal is still unclear, but Arjen Lucassen just put up a track from his new solo album, and the amount of styles in this one track is just...wow.
