    Posted: 25 Oct 2011 at 5:04pm
In this day and age of mp3s and what not, it seems that cover art is less and less important in mainstream music. Still, 2011 has given us a lot of awesome cover artworks in the world of metal. These are among my favorites:

Sci-fi = awesome!

An iconic and unforgettable cover!

I like the simplicity, and how it differs from the other AG covers.

Surreal, abstract sci-fi themed and very much in line with the lyrical concept of the album.

Yay! Blasphemy rules!

So metal, it hurts!

The Grim Reaper... and a baby. How gruesome! How metal!

Totally otherworldly to me (but probably of central cultural significance in Taiwan), and very drawing!

Outer space, planets, symbols, lots of atmosphere (duh, not in space!) = great album art

Metal as fuck! Cool logo, too.

Haven't heard the album, but I really like the cover art.

Simple, yet complex, very much like the music on the album.

If this piece of cover artwork is any indicator of the music, then we're really in for a treat in November.

A dark, almost surreal, piece of artwork which fits the music on the album very well.

Simplicity is power!

Creepy and expressive, this is an awesome cover artwork.

I like how you can see the texture of the canvas... oh yeah, and the abstract motif itself.

Old school brutality. Really takes you back to the 90s and the heyday of death metal.

Here's looking at you...

Simple, yet surreal, and full of weird symbolism.

Love the analogical symbolism on this cover.

Surreal, yet brutal!

Another example of old school death metal brutality.

Psychedelic, man!

Wonderful style and nice, cold color scheme.

This is big and epic... could have been a prog rock cover artwork.

... this one, too.

Super creepy, this, and it is hard to believe that it's actually from a power metal album and not a death metal album.

Another metal-as-fuck piece of cover art!

I like the contrast of the black.and.white image of The titanic and the blue flames surrounding it.

Simple color scheme, yet a quite avant-garde image

Look, ma, Flying Vs!

An abstract, menacing landscape is always a winner.

Excellent use of red.

Epic, larger-than-life and metal-as-fuck cover (I was disappointed with the music, but the cover rocks).

Just because of the guitars!

Mr Anti-Social is back!

Anthrax! Zombies!

As a comicbook fan, I really dig this piece of ridiculously brutal cover art.

8-D

Punk it up!

Great use of organic green-ish colors.

Larger than life. Metal as fuck. Oh, and nice album, too.

I really like the Arch/Matheos, but the cover isn't anything special.

These are all great. I don't think the actual Rob Moratti album would be my thing, but I love its art.

Far as I'm concerned the special edition of Doombound has better art:

Others:

More sci-fi art.

I love folk metal art.

I'm not sure this one really needs a caption.

Sci-Fi strikes again

The art actually very symbolic, that's why I like it.

Fitting for folk metal IMO.

I think 'metal as fuck' applies here.

Simple yet effective

Yep, sci-fi again

and again...

Wasn't a major fan of the album, but the art is great

Fits with the music perfectly.

Celestial Lineage by Wolves in the Throne Room.  Look at it.  It took me a while to realize that this picture was taken in a forest instead of a cave.

Parasignosis by Mitochondrion.  This one is dark and disturbing to behold.  Just like the music.

I have not heard this band or album, but this cover makes me want to change that.

Really? As much as I love the album, I thought the artwork (front as well as inner) was quite, ehm, forgettable. ;)
What makes it iconic to you?
