These are the three main categories of lyrical themes in metal music that the generic soccer mom will find to get the CD banned from sale from a local Wal-Mart. Wink

As a metal listener, which do you find most offensive, if at all?

Probably a tie between racism and perverse themes... I'll go with racism

While Nationalist/racist themes usually get on my nerves its like the most perverted and violent sexual lyrical themes and pics of "real" mutilated bodies irk me more. Ill never get offended to a point where Ill scream "Censorship" though. No way in hell. After all I decide if I want to read, listen to or watch art with content like that. Its my duty as a parent to educate my children to how they should react if they come across material like that.

Of the above, I have the fewest albums in my collection that deal with national socialism or racism, so I voted for that.  None of the other ones really bother me.  I'm 99% of the time music first, lyrics second, so good bands can often get away with mediocre lyrics, and themes/meanings can sometimes get hidden (extreme metal in particular for that point).  If the lyrics stand out as particularly bad, it usually means I don't think much of the music.

The majority of National Socialist themes in metal appear in black metal as NSBM.  But even then, the broader white nationalist movement has mixed reception for the genre.  Some have liked them, but others don't like the music style as they perceive it with the "sex, drugs & rock n roll" feel.

Big name musicians in black metal such as Jon Nodtveidt of Dissection; Infernus, Tormentor, and King ov Hell of Gorgoroth; and Lord Ahriman and Emperor Magus Caligula of Dark Funeral all reject or strongly criticize NSBM.  It's also been declared that the ideology of Nazism conflicts with individuality and misanthropy, traits prominent in black metal.  A lot of black metalers also regard Nazism the same way as religion: "authoritarian, collectivist, and a 'herd mentality'".

On the flip-side, we have Varg Vikernes who pretty much is a Nazi.  http://www.burzum.org/eng/library/a_burzum_story07.shtml

As I've said many times I dont really listen to lyrics so I can't let anything really get to me.
But that's not a fun answer and there are of course things I won't tolerate.

The thing is, it's about seriousness...I don't really buy much of a what metal band sings unless they really make it clear they mean it. But yeah, assuming seriousness:

I'm not bothered at all by anti-religion or satanism.
Perverse themes are seriously a joke. No one out there REALLY espouses rape, necrophilia and a lot of the shit we see.
Nazism/racism is something I just do not tolerate.
Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

I'm not fond of the rape/bondage stuff but will let it slide if the band is good (Carpathian Forest) but Racism gets an instant 'turn it off,' from me for some reason, can't ever let it go.

Fourth option. The racism can get annoying, but I know I'm not promoting suicide whenever I listen to Joy Division, so therefore it doesn't bother me when I listen to Burzum, etc.

I have an issue with racist lyrics, mostly because those are serious. Lyrics that encourage rape, violence, etc. are 99% of the time tongue-in-cheek. Anti-religious lyrics don't bother me since I'm an atheist.

The lyrics that really turn me off are the super-descriptive depictions of rape and child abuse. Those can make me sick to my stomach. Lyrics that are seriously racist also piss me off too, I guess. Although, like Jonas, censorship is NEVER  the option. I support the freedom of being able to listen to what I want to hear, and not listen to what I don't want to hear. It's nobody else's job to decide that.

I would say that when a band puts real pictures of rape, gore and othr things of similar nature, it really irks me. The racism also make me pissed. I would say it is really a tie between the two.

in principle, i would prefer to be able to say none of that stuff really bothers me to the extent that it provokes moral outrage as opposed to just firm disagreement. in practice, if a band throws in sincere racist or national socialist lyrics, that almost always makes me lose respect for them. that said, i tend to find that most nsbm bands and similarly ideologically oriented types end up putting their ideology before the music anyway so it is no great loss if i refrain from listening to them.

Not quite NSBM, but Fanisk do have a lot of Ariosophic imagery.

Hate Nazi lyrics and I don't enjoy satanic lyrics either. The splatter lyrics are fine as long as they don't come along with real gore pictures.

However, the latest offender in lyrics came from an unexpected source. Eldritch. I was given the task to review their latest album for the Greek Metal Hammer and I have to say, this is the first time I felt the need to address the lyrics, which I usually pretty much ignore.

Option 2 and 3 - I would never listen to something like that.
As for the first option, I generally don't mind, I actually agree to most lyrical content against the church or organized religion. I consider myself a Christian (but others disagree because of my attitude against priests and church, makes no sense, right?). I would not listen to blasphemous lyrics though, those just for the sake of it.

Satanism is pretty damn silly, and I just can't take it seriously, no matter how seriously a band takes it. But then I think christianity, or any other form of religion, is all pretty dumb too.

Most of the perverse stuff is just trying to be as shocking as possible. Some is a little disturbing, like a sample on a Cock and Ball Torture album I have, which is the soundtrack from a Japanese porno. For some reason, Japanese porn always has girls crying in it. Just a bit unsettling...

What I really hate is racism and fascism. It's just downright ignorant. It shows a lack of basic understanding of human history. Most of the Nazi skins I've ever had the misfortune of knowing would have been the first ones up against the wall if they'd ever encountered real Nazis.

I don't mind a band like Anal Cunt using the odd racist term, because even though Seth Putnam was trying very hard to offend, you know there was no real malice behind it. I'm not apologising for the guy, because he was a fucking dick, but he was actually a bit smarter than he made himself out to be.

I voted the first option. Satanism doesn't appear in most music I listen to and is generally too silly to care about, but I can't deal with anti-christian lyrics if they get too  hostile, just because while I'm personally not overly religious, my late father was to the end and my mother still is, so when I listen to a power metal album and it talks about how all christians are evil and deserve to die, that kinda upsets me, especially now (my father passed away just a month ago, and that's why I've been so quiet lately.)
