I don't have a problem with love lyrics in general, but I do have an issue with the cheesy love song/ballad type.

That would bother me too, but thankfully outside of glam metal, that doesn't appear too often. LOL

I'm sorry about your loss Travis, my condolences.

I voted the second option, as I really don't want to hear that unless it's a joke. I have a problem most with those goregrind and pornogrind bands, as it's just so utterly revolting I don't want to listen to it. Even if I don't understand the lyrics, just sometimes knowing the album cover or title makes me want to vomit.

I also have an issue with overly whiny lyrics, so stuff like "Nobody loves me", "I want to kill myself", or shit like that. Although I can usually avoid those, as it's mostly whiny mainstream metalcore bands that have those types of lyrics.

Sorry to hear about your father Travis. It's a tough thing to go through.

For me, my big problem with satanic lyrics (speaking as someone who is religious) is not because of some insult to God (S/He is big enough to deal with that, I'm sure) but that it's dismissed as silly nonsense, where evil seems to be to be very much alive and well in the world. The lyrics often touch on rejection of any notions of collectivism / community, love, compassion etc. Why anyone, religious or not, should want to listen to constant tirades of hate I've no idea. I'm cool with songs expressing hate, just not holding it up as some overarching approach to life. This doesn't just apply to satanic music either. I wouldn't want my music to be all happy children and flowers. My favourite music tends to be dark. Just not overtly misanthropic.

I voted the first option. Satanism doesn't appear in most music I listen to and is generally too silly to care about, but I can't deal with anti-christian lyrics if they get too  hostile, just because while I'm personally not overly religious, my late father was to the end and my mother still is, so when I listen to a power metal album and it talks about how all christians are evil and deserve to die, that kinda upsets me, especially now (my father passed away just a month ago, and that's why I've been so quiet lately.)

Satanism is pretty damn silly, and I just can't take it seriously, no matter how seriously a band takes it. But then I think christianity, or any other form of religion, is all pretty dumb too.

Most of the perverse stuff is just trying to be as shocking as possible. Some is a little disturbing, like a sample on a Cock and Ball Torture album I have, which is the soundtrack from a Japanese porno. For some reason, Japanese porn always has girls crying in it. Just a bit unsettling...

What I really hate is racism and fascism. It's just downright ignorant. It shows a lack of basic understanding of human history. Most of the Nazi skins I've ever had the misfortune of knowing would have been the first ones up against the wall if they'd ever encountered real Nazis.

I don't mind a band like Anal Cunt using the odd racist term, because even though Seth Putnam was trying very hard to offend, you know there was no real malice behind it. I'm not apologising for the guy, because he was a fucking dick, but he was actually a bit smarter than he made himself out to be.

Option 2 and 3 - I would never listen to something like that.
As for the first option, I generally don't mind, I actually agree to most lyrical content against the church or organized religion. I consider myself a Christian (but others disagree because of my attitude against priests and church, makes no sense, right?). I would not listen to blasphemous lyrics though, those just for the sake of it.

Sounds like someone's schoolwork got mixed up with band lyrics!

Hate Nazi lyrics and I don't enjoy satanic lyrics either. The splatter lyrics are fine as long as they don't come along with real gore pictures.

However, the latest offender in lyrics came from an unexpected source. Eldritch. I was given the task to review their latest album for the Greek Metal Hammer and I have to say, this is the first time I felt the need to address the lyrics, which I usually pretty much ignore.

Not quite NSBM, but Fanisk do have a lot of Ariosophic imagery.

in principle, i would prefer to be able to say none of that stuff really bothers me to the extent that it provokes moral outrage as opposed to just firm disagreement. in practice, if a band throws in sincere racist or national socialist lyrics, that almost always makes me lose respect for them. that said, i tend to find that most nsbm bands and similarly ideologically oriented types end up putting their ideology before the music anyway so it is no great loss if i refrain from listening to them.

I would say that when a band puts real pictures of rape, gore and othr things of similar nature, it really irks me. The racism also make me pissed. I would say it is really a tie between the two.

I have an issue with racist lyrics, mostly because those are serious. Lyrics that encourage rape, violence, etc. are 99% of the time tongue-in-cheek. Anti-religious lyrics don't bother me since I'm an atheist.

The lyrics that really turn me off are the super-descriptive depictions of rape and child abuse. Those can make me sick to my stomach. Lyrics that are seriously racist also piss me off too, I guess. Although, like Jonas, censorship is NEVER  the option. I support the freedom of being able to listen to what I want to hear, and not listen to what I don't want to hear. It's nobody else's job to decide that.

Fourth option. The racism can get annoying, but I know I'm not promoting suicide whenever I listen to Joy Division, so therefore it doesn't bother me when I listen to Burzum, etc.

I'm not fond of the rape/bondage stuff but will let it slide if the band is good (Carpathian Forest) but Racism gets an instant 'turn it off,' from me for some reason, can't ever let it go.

As I've said many times I dont really listen to lyrics so I can't let anything really get to me.
But that's not a fun answer and there are of course things I won't tolerate.

The thing is, it's about seriousness...I don't really buy much of a what metal band sings unless they really make it clear they mean it. But yeah, assuming seriousness:

I'm not bothered at all by anti-religion or satanism.
Perverse themes are seriously a joke. No one out there REALLY espouses rape, necrophilia and a lot of the shit we see.
Nazism/racism is something I just do not tolerate.
Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!
