I've never had any doubt that one day this would happen, but it's official, Mike Portnoy is back in Dream Theater.

The band has released five albums since Portnoy's exit in 2010. Their last with him was 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. He had played with other Dream Theater members since though in Liquid Tension Experiment and drummed on John Petrucci's second solo album Terminal Velocity.

If it stops the long line of unremarkable releases they´ve had, it could be a good thing.

To my ears they peaked a long time before Portnoy left. The last couple have been good and Mangini is an awesome player but perhaps the return of Portnoy might encourage them to look at what made those early albums so great and pull something really special out of the bag.

I thought their last two were actually pretty good, if not exactly breaking the mould. I bought both of them (albeit when reduced by a whole lot) whereas I hadn't bought anything from them since A Dramatic Turn of Events (which I think is a really great and underrated DT album).

The only one I didn't buy was The Astonishing. Even for completeness of my collection i couldn't bring myself to part with my cash for that one. if I ever see it for a couple of quid I might pick it up.

I'm glad Portnoy's back, but I'll definitely miss Mangini. Unfortunately, the overwhelmingly negative reception for The Astonishing pretty much forced them to play things super safe on their last two albums, so I had lost hope for them doing anything really interesting again. Hopefully Portnoy can encourage them to take more risks, regardless of what anyone says about the resulting album, because they're not that great when they play things too safe.

I really really like three of the five Mangini era albums but I vastly prefer the drum sound and liveliness of Portnoy's drumming, so I'm very interested in where this is going. The songwriting has been pretty great for the last two, MP's addition could boost it even more or then go downhill. It's a pretty uneven discography as a whole.
