I decided on mine. Very tough! I'll talk a bit about each choice.
In alphabetical order: Anubis Gate - The Detached This album holds a special place for me. I feel very lucky to have a copy of it as it has been hard to find for years and out of print outside of the Orbits boxset reissue. It's also very, very re-listenable for me. Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle My favourite album of all time. One of only three I put on here that was a dead cert. Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond Ayreon may have made my favourite individual album, but Blind Guardian is hands down my favourite band. And this is my favourite album by them. Second no brainer inclusion. Blood Ceremony - Lord of Misrule I sometimes forget how much I actually love Blood Ceremony. Although they are one of my least played artist of these ten on my Last.fm, I can listen to this band anytime. I'd need a Blood Ceremony album if I could only ever have ten. Epica - The Divine Conspiracy Perhaps not the most technically accomplished album Epica has made, which I think is probably The Holographic Principle (also would have been a worthy pick), but it holds the most nostalgia for me. The album that I discovered them with and single-handedly made the symphonic metal genre sound viable to me again. It also has Chasing the Dragon on it, which is one of my all time favourite songs. Iced Earth - Night of the Stormrider Probably the album that was the closest to getting excluded here in favour of a large pool of other bands who got left out. Not sure how much of that is residual contempt for Jon Schaffer. But anyway, this was always a very important album for me. Classic era may always be considered with Barlow, but this is still my favourite Iced Earth album. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son The third and final no brainer of this list. Iron Maiden have more albums than most artists that would be worthy of including in this, but I do have a clear favourite Iron Maiden album. It was one of two that were my first Iron Maiden albums, and it's nearly always the one I reach for first when I want some Iron Maiden. Lovebites - Awakening From Abyss The newest band to make my ten. I have played this album so much since it came out in 2017 and as I'm sure that's not going to change, it makes the cut over a lot of artists I've been listening to longer. Nightwish - Oceanborn This is such a re-listenable album for me, that I had to give it a slot. Perhaps it wouldn't make my top ten of all time on another day, but if I was limited to no other music but these ten, I'd need something I can play any time. This is one such album. Paradise Lost - The Plague Within Perhaps not my favourite album from them, a band I consider infinitely re-listenable in regard to the bulk of their releases. I picked this one because if I had to only have one album by Paradise Lost, it ought to be one that represented a lot of sides to them and this one fits that bill better than most, except perhaps Obsidian. I like this one more though. Special shoutout to Wuthering Heights - Far From the Madding Crowd as well, which should really also be here, but I ran out of slots. I've also put my list on List Challenges on the link below. I'd like to suggest that anyone who takes part also posts their list there. See if we can't get a thing going. |

Ayreon - The Human Equation
My favorite album of all time, by most likely my favorite artist of all time, so it's a no-brainer. Dream Theater - The Astonishing The super controversial pick, LOL But yeah, I still love it, and listen to it every once in a while. It's one of those albums I'll put it on when I want a super cheesy, lengthy concept album, and it probably is still my favorite of theirs. Ensiferum - From Afar I'd want at least one album where harsh vocals are driving force, so I'll go with this, my favorite folk/melodeath/power/symphonic metal hybrid album of all time  But seriously, I love all their albums, and this one just barely edges out the rest.Epica - The Quantum Enigma My favorite symphonic metal album of all time, especially the title track, so if I want something super epic, with fantastic female vocals, it would be my go to album. Fear Factory - Demanufacture A bit of an oddball pick, but they were one of the first bands that got me into metal, particularly the more extreme side of it, and I still consider them one of my all time favorites, with this album in particular being my favorite of theirs. Freedom Call - Master of Light This ridiculously cheesy band always cheers me up, and are one of my most listened to bands of all time, with this in particular being my favorite, so I'll put it on the list. Iron Maiden - Powerslave I wouldn't feel right not picking one of their albums, so I'll with this one, since it very slightly edges out Seventh Son and Number of the Beast to be my personal favorite of theirs. Sabaton - Heroes Another one of my most listened to bands of all time, who pretty much have to be here, so I'll go with my most played albums of theirs, which I still listen to frequently and consider one of the most addictive albums of all time. Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape I think Tiara may edge it out slightly as far as overall preference, but if I'm gonna be limited to only ever listening to 10 albums for the rest of my life, I'm going to need some non-concept albums, with strong individual tracks, so I'm picking this one. The 30 minute title track is probably my second favorite epic length track of all time (behind only The Voyage, of course), but all other tracks are also fantastic in their own way. If I was stuck in a real situation like this I'd go for compilations - the first four Speed Kills, Monsters of Death, Thrash The Wall, Punk-O-Rama, Survival of the Fattest, Grindcrusher, and At Death's door. However, since we're doing studio albums...
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time There's gotta be Maiden Metallica - ...And Justice For All Megadeth - So Far, So Good...So What! Slayer - South of Heaven Anthrax - Persistence of Time I can't escape the Big Four - I was a thrash kid. I might be tempted to swap Megadeth for Exodus if I was really pushed. Macabre - Dahmer There's so much great death metal out there, but very little of it quite so darkly humorous. And I could listen to this album on loop very easily. NOFX - Coaster My all time favourite band. Gotta have something in there. Not as hard or as edgy as some of their earlier albums, but this is more introspective and thought-provoking. And there's a song about Iron Maiden. Carcass - Necroticism I like this better than the melodic stuff, and it's a more sensible listen than the earlier stuff. Entombed - Clandestine I just love the guitar sound here. There's no LG on vocals here and they are really a studio construct, but that doesn't matter. Regurgitate - Carnivorous Erection Total stupid reckless out of control gory porn-y goodness! And a thoroughly obscene but hilarious album cover...

I really got into that sort of pop punk in the mid-90s when I got a bit bored with metal.
Saw NOFX live on the Pet Your Zoo tour. we were the last show on the tour, and Fat Mike was sick with flu, but they put on a hell of a good show. I had a stage diver land on my head that night. All good fun!

I love the rougher side of pop punk too. Are you familiar with Descendents? Highly influential on the 90s skate punk scene but are criminally unknown. Their 1996 album Everything Sucks is the perfect blend of hardcore and pop punk. |

I´ll skip anything which isn´t metal to keep things on topic: 1. Atheist - Unquestianable Presence. I can listen to that album every day all day, and I always seem to hear something I haven´t noticed before plus the sheer power and craziness of the playing blow me away everytime. Definitely a favorite album of mine. 2 . Psychotic Waltz - Into the Everflow. I don´t listen to as much Psychotic Waltz as I used to but this one is still one of the most brilliant albums I have ever listened to, and I adore it. 3. Slayer - Reing in Blood. It´s always been a favorite and it´s just amazing in all it´s relentless aggression and mean hooks. 4. Metallica - Master of Puppets. Metallica meant a lot to me and the way I learned to listen to metal, and this album is just killer all the way through. 5. Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy. Huge, epic, sharp, brutal, aggresive, melodic, sci-fi influenced. I love how Nevermore always combined the brutal aggression of thrash with the epic and melodic parts of US power. I could have picked other Nevermore albums too, but this one is extra cold and brutal, and I just find it a great album. 6. Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence. From the first time I listened to Tortured Existence I was in love with the vocals, the aggression, the energy, the lyrics, the guitar solos...just everyting about this album speaks to me. The production is not the best, but somehow even that ends up suiting the remaining parts of the album. 7. Morgoth - Odium. A lot of people will probably wonder about this one, but I think it´s a brilliant and quite unique sounding death metal release (with thrash and industrial elements). The desperate and sad post-apocalyptic atmosphere of the album speaks to me. 8. King Diamond - Abigail. I´m a huge Mercyful Fate/King Diamond fan and Abigail has always stood to me as the crowning achievement of King Diamond. Absolutely brilliant. 9. Voivod - Nothingface. I could have piched other Voivod albums too, but I always felt that Nothingface was their most unique album. Nothing in the world sounds even remotely like Nothingface... 10. Type O Negative - October Rust. This one was hard to chose as I like all Type O Negative albums, but October Rust brings back memories of my youth and it´s a massive album featuring some of the band´s most melodic and intriguing material. ...damn I realise I could have picked so many other releases, but since I only got the chance to present 10, I guess the picks above are pretty valid.

My varied taste will not allow for metal-exclusive list but in
no particular order and with profuse apologies to the stacks of albums which didn't make the list despite being equally worthy......
Mastodon – Crack the Skye This was the album that got me into the band and is the one I return to most although I love all their early work and somewhat enjoy their more recent releases. For me, Crack the Skye has a perfect balance of heavy riffs, progressive structures with a touch of psychedelia and is one of my all-time favourite albums.
Crowbar – Sonic Excess in it’s Purest Form The ultimate journey into the depths of soul crushing sludge – enough said.
Flourishing – The Sum of All Fossils I have only discovered this fantastically crazy mix of Gorguts-esque technical death, sludge and industrial metal recently, but I cannot stop listening to it so going to chuck it in here hoping others will check it out. As much as I love tech death in general, this album possesses a certain charm that other albums lack. The structure ebbs and flows, keeping things interesting from start to finish every time I listen – this is the best tech death album you’ve never heard.
Iron Maiden – Seventh Son of a Seventh Son No list would be complete without a Maiden album and my pick must be this. A complete delight without fail every time and has some of my favourite riffs of all time. Classic, timeless and will never fail to please.
Dinosaur Jr. – You’re Living All Over Me Possibly my favourite album ever – equally noisy and emotive and genre defining. Mascis displays an insane ability to nail every solo while still making it sound like a jam. Not everyone’s poison but my list would be horribly incomplete without it
Descendents – Everything Sucks Starting out as a hardcore punk act in the early 80s, Descendents proved to be majorly influential on the 90s punk scene. By the mid 1990s, they had taken some influence back from that some movement and produced this outstanding blend of melodic hardcore and pop/skate punk. The musicianship on all fronts is incredible with shoutouts to bassist and also the machine of a drummer Bill Stevenson who also performed on classic Black Flag albums such “My War” and “Slip It In” Blink-182 – Dude Ranch I imagine this selection might generate some sneers but it’s another of my all-time favourites. It’s a far cry from the overproduced glossy pop music they would become known for a few years later. Rough, riffy and punky and for me, it will always be a massive nostalgia trip. I will never tire of it. Stereolab – Dots and Loops I never would have thought this avant-pop band would be mentioned on this site but it makes my list no questions asked. If anyone has an inkling to check out some experimental lounge mixed with jazzy post-rock and exotica overlain with beautifully hypnotic female French vocals – this is certainly the place to visit.
Genesis – Selling England by the Pound The finest symphonic prog album in my book. A complete blast to listen to from start to finish with Peter Gabriel still very much at the forefront and Phil Collins at his rightful place behind the kit (although he does perform lead vocals on one track). A true masterpiece of progressive rock.
Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here A bit of a cop out here with such a widely revered
album but it undeniably deserves a place - flawlessly structured and textured
throughout and an entrancing journey through sound. The final 6-7 minutes of the last track are amongst the most beautiful musical compositions I

I've found this very difficult as my favourite records change daily. When thinking about what records I always go back to, it's often those I grew up with. Makes for a pretty safe list unfortunately. For this list I've avoided prog (will struggle without it) and punk (a huge part of my listening life). Anyway, these are my all-time favourite albums in absolutely no particular order:
Queen - Had to have at least one Queen album and II is a great album. It would have to be the extended version that contains the superb See What a Fool I've Been - brilliantly camp and heavy :-) Judas Priest - Lots to choose from but went with Stained Class. Who could be without Beyond The Realms of Death. Iron Maiden - Powerslave. Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner. Metallica - God these are difficult. Gone with Master of Puppets but could be either of the releases either side of this. Anthrax - Have a pile of Anthrax records but Among The Living (and Spreading the Disease) is a favourite. Rainbow - Love 'em all but has to be Rising. Opeth - Love the later stuff but Still Life gets the most plays. Sanctuary - Refuse Denied. Bought this when it came out without having heard anything of them (no internet back then) and loved it. Black Sabbath - I'd love to keep all of them up to Dehumanizer but I'll settle for Paranoid. Crowbar - had to have one sludge album here and why not Broken Glass. Great album. |

I'm going to try to get the most diverse list possible to my tastes.  Then I'd need some black metal and no better place to start than a band that has always been important to me:  For death metal I think it would have to be a Nile album:  For thrash I can't go wrong with Metallica. This one is close, but I've got to go for Master of Puppets.  For prog there's temptation for something more traditional, but Opeth wins out.  For power metal it could come down to a lot of bands, but I think Blind Guardian has to take it.  For something symphonic I'd be tempted toward a couple of other bands, but for long term staying power I can't beat Epica.  For doom metal there are probably more famous bands I could pick, but for an album that always hits the spot for me it has to be Avatarium's debut.  For folk metal, it's between Cruachan and Arkona. But I have played this album from Cruachan more.  I cannot cover every genre in ten albums, so I'm going to give my final slot to something non-metal, albeit a band who is on this site and did eventually start playing metal:  I put mine on LC: |
