Yeah, it's bizarre who they choose and don't choose to pick on sometimes. They're pretty silent about all the awful stuff that some of those second-wave black metal musicians did (especially the Mayhem gang) but have a field day with some innocuous musician just for previously being a model and former indie pop artist.

With Myrkur and others it's pure misogyny. There are still some toxic metal fans who don't want any women in the scene who really let the side down, since otherwise we're a very inclusive bunch and not prejudice against anyone.

Myrkur is an easy target because of her past career choices. You'd think they'd instead praise any artist who makes the jump from pop to black metal of all things and maybe they would have if she'd played generic kvlt BM, instead of taking it to atypical places. But even if she had made generic music they'd still focus on her modelling career.

The late Jill Janus of Huntress was also an easy target for these people. She committed suicide two years ago. She brought this kind of slutty witch persona to her stage presence, so of course arseholes attacked her for it, as well as her past career as a topless DJ. Fan testimony always said that off stage she was down to Earth and a total sweetheart. She had mental health issues which are believed to be what led to her suicide. I always have wondered if the keyboard warriors and their hurtful comments played a role as well. For my money Jill was one of the best heavy metal singers to gain a following in the 2010s and Huntress's debut album remains a favourite modern heavy metal album of mine.

I think all women in metal bands have probably experienced misogyny at some point in their lives. For musicians it never has anything to do with the music they actually make. As a female fan I have experienced it as well.

I gotta say Jill Janus' image put me off her music initially, but when I actually LISTENED to it, which is what you're supposed to do with music, I gotta agree with your assessment of her singing abilities. Mental illness is an awful thing.

I'm always surprised at how low rated this is here. Yes they improved by leaps and bounds on The Spectre Within but this one is not that bad.

Let's see how this goes......

Edit: Well, I'm quite liking that supposedly wretched first track, so it's off to a promising start!

Goddamn it, the default Youtube playlist had a messed up order, sending me from the first track right up to near the end Angry Back to the very beginning, with a non fucked up playlist, it is!

That was excellent, definitely one of their better albums. It has hints of their more experiment later works, but is still mostly progressive, if very moody and modern sounding, at points. The longer tracks all hit, and interludes are quite nice. Definitely one of my favorites by them.

Now it's time to see how a band I once loved, could produce a 1 (nearly 0.5 star album), in what many people considered a return to form. I was always puzzled by my reaction to this album, so it'll be interesting to see if it goes any better at all, now that I know I still enjoy their early work, at the very least.

^Yeah, that one may just be unsalvageable. WAY too much garbage rap sections. I find if rap is used sporadically, as on most of their albums, it doesn't bother me, but here it's used CONSTANTLY, and very obnoxously, so it's just giving me a massive headache. I guess every non perfect band will have their one dumb album, though, so, whatever..... I just have to think, though, if Adam reviewed this he'd probably have to give it negative stars, somehow LOL

Actually my favorite Japanese power metal album of the year, even over Lovebites. It's not as traditional as that one, but still quite heavy, mostly pure symphonic power metal, with no J-Pop whatsoever, and quite a bit of melodeath. It's an absolute blast of an album!

I have no intention of ever listening to a single note this one. Wink
