Hmm these two teaser singles from the forthcoming Volbeat album are pretty good.

Unsurprisingly, as a big fan of the previous three albums, this one feels like a step down to me. I still like it, obviously, as it's similar to the first three albums, but the more proggy direction of the last few albums appealed to me more, where this feels more like generic tech death/MDM.

Yes on first listen to me it's their weakest since their early ones. It's as if bringing their original vocalist back caused them to undo all the growth they made musically with the last three.

Genuinely surprised that early RYM ratings are placing this as their best yet.

I mean even just compared to Elements of the Infinite, which is the album that got me into them and in many ways remains my favourite, this seems to pale.

It might open up with more listens but so far while I wouldn't ever say it's anything but solid tech/melodeath, it does seem a let down.

Over the last few days I went through the entire Allegaeon discography in sequence. While I think I can say I enjoyed The Ossuary Lens a little more this time round, my view is one step closer to settled than this is their weakest album to date.

https://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/epica/aspiral

Got my pre-order in a day early.

Although the singles from this one weren't as immediate for me as on previous albums, I'm very pleased with the full album on first listen.

Plus it's got the full Live at the Symphonic Synergy blu-ray included with it (without being extraordinarily priced) which I've still to watch.

^I already reviewed that, and my feeling on it is it's not one of my favorites by them, but it's still Epica, so it's fantastic, as always. They're by far the most consistent symphonic metal band, and I wouldn't rate any of their albums less than 4.5, with a good many of them being straight up 5easy 5 stars albums, so even a lesser album is still better than anything most other symphonic bands can do, imo.

It's funny how they were actually quite turbulent during the late 2000's/early 2010's, and yet now they're one of the most predictable bands I follow, but entirely in a good way, in that I always know exactly what to expect, and I know I'll love it every time. This is no exception.
